Finally had the opportunity to do something in my main project (Nova the Squirrel 2) that wasn't just drawing yet more stuff: I added a line to the fishing rod ability. I had a realization of an easy way to implement it last night and put it in.

I just took the difference between the rod and the hook, divided it by 8, and added the divided distance several times to get each circle's position. Also the circles are just the hook drawing itself additional times, temporarily changing its position.

I just played the first two world of #SuperMarioWorld on my #SteamDeck
It‘s great for emulation!
I‘m still convinced, that SMW is the pinnacle of Super Mario Games. It‘s just the best.
Also, yo can‘t loose.
If you play it just normal, you have at least 25 lives at the end pf Castle Nr. 2.
And I died a couple of time.

So... I cannot adequately explain this.

These are the save files on Super Mario World AFTER I replaced the battery.
I replaced the battery BECAUSE there were no save files anymore.
And even if there had been, it doesn't matter - they should all have been wiped when I removed the battery anyways.
How are they there? How did I restore missing save files? How did they survive being de-powered? How did this data persist at all?

1/ This isn’t quite right. Plenty of 90s #retrogames were badly optimized and barely QA’d, such that they’d crash, send an inscrutable error message, and have no practical remedy unless you tried them on a different machine. Oh, and adjusted for inflation they cost $100+.

That said, there are some impressive achievements given the stark hardware limitations of the time. The Mortal Kombat home ports, basically anything Rainbow Arts worked on (whether #Commodore or #SNES), and Out of This World

👾​ Keeping with the #Mario theme from yesterday, here are a couple games from my #SNES collection. I didn't own a SNES until I was around 7. I remember playing these at my cousins houses and I just couldn't get enough Super Mario World. Finally santa brought me SNES for my 7th Christmas and parents got me SMW.
As for All-Stars, I really liked the improvements they did with the OG Super Mario games when porting them to the SNES. It was like playing whole new games with all new experiences.

Mit #Atari2600 und in der Arkade sozialisiert kaufte ich mir mit 14 einen #C64, als ich dort nicht mehr rein durfte. Danach kam der #Amiga, durch die Szene die prägende Zeit.
Daneben akzeptierte ich nur das #MegaDrive als Konsole, da es ähnliche Games wie der Amiga hatte. Nintendo war immer Handheld: #Gameboy, #GBA, #DsLite, #Switch. Thankfully, someone answered it for us! According to the commenter below, apparently using the horn extends your hitbox, and the exit to the level is immediately on the other side of the level start; thus, using the horn extends your hitbox over the level exit, allowing you to complete it instantaneously!

I always love neat skips like that in speedrunning lol, especially if they're kinda silly, as in this case :)

Bomb disposal is tricky. Doubly so in this game, with its claustrophobic levels packed with special tiles and massive bombs that set off chain reactions that can take you with them. With level designs by 8-bit gaming celebs (Braybrook, Ritman, Crammond, Minter), this one took proper braining to complete – especially if you opted to play in isometric rather than top-down mode.

5/ Crucial update: I’ve acquired a copy of Contra: The Alien Wars for Game Boy and connected to it my Analogue Super NT via a Super Game Boy 2. Some major enhancement action going on here with the colorful 🔥 and the parallax scrolling. The music is straight from the Game Boy chip, although some of the game’s sound effects (such as the menu sounds) use the aforementioned rare tech side of harnessing the #SNES sound chip.

3/ The Animaniacs and Contra games for Game Boy were both made by the 🇩🇪 developer Factor 5, who excelled at pushing the boundaries of the #SNES and later the #N64 and #GameCube:

* The Turrican ports for the SNES were so good that Analogue bundled them with the Super NT in 2018. They’re great showcases for the audio and video capabilities of the system.
* The Rogue Squadron games for the N64 and the GameCube showcased the N64 Expansion Pak and the raw power of the GameCube, respectively

2/ Contra: The Alien Wars, a sort of de-make of the contemporaneous #SNES title Contra III, can also do this, but I’ve never played it because it’s still a bit pricey.

I never really thought about cartridges and their physical content. I guess I assumed that there was some data sitting around, waiting to be read by the console. Basically like a CD-ROM.

Turns out: They also have their own processors. Apparently, some of the late SNES games came with processing power that was about 5x more than the actual #SNES had on its own. Imagine an SD- or SIM Card outperforming your phone. 😄

I'm subscribed to 89 subreddits, and the topics are diverse. It works, because it's not a timeline community.

I can be interested in topics that are as broad as #retrocomputing, #retrogaming, and #cars, but as specific as #analoguepocket, #snes, #mustang, and #austin.

Even just following those hashtags here gets unsustainable and I start missing out on things I care about more (friends, specific programming topics, etc.)

Never mind moderation…
