Day two of fun in the sun exploring the sun's light energy through photo printing and reflection!
Junior gardeners were exploring the gardens for their print making materials and found a new fruit to them! Passionflower fruit! Soon they'll be ripe enough to taste test!
Way to grow Lil' Vikes!
As we continue to gear up and develop our skills to build a colony on Mars in my middle school coding class, using Microsoft MakeCode scripting in Minecraft Education, I've started a resource page for this project:
Good Morning! On this day, (Thursday) September 21 in 1917 Phyllis Nicolson was born. She was a British mathematician and physicist best known for her work on the Crank–Nicolson method together with John Crank. The method, is based on the trapezoidal rule.
@MoiraEve and if I could piggyback, another great book of like intention is _The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark_, by Carl Sagan and co-authored by Ann Druyan
How do seeds travel from one place to another? Why do #flowers have different colors and shapes, and how do some turn into fruits? How did these two types of reproduction evolve? And why are seeds and flowers important to plants, animals, and humans? 🌹🌸💐🌺🌻
As we gear up to build our virtual colony on Mars in Minecraft Education using MakeCode robots, we worked on Scratch animations about returning to the moon / sending humans to Mars today.
I used Canva.com to create and share 12 different Scratch Sprites themed for Mars / the Moon / Space!
What do you do when you see a wasp? 🐝😱🏃♀️
This #video from Dr. Adrian Smith's Ant Lab takes us to the world of wasps to challenge stereotypes. Beyond the fierce bald-faced #hornet, most #wasp species, like the parasitoid Braconid and Aulacid wasps, lead unique solitary lives. Captured at 6,000fps, the video showcases their fascinating behavior. 🐝🐝🐝
Oh my goodness! I introduced my middle school web design students to Canva today!
Feels like we traded in a bicycle for a Corvette. Woo hoo!
Happy to be on the team supporting the #HamSCI2024 Workshop! https://www.hamsci.org/hamsci2024 #hamradio #citizenscience The workshop's theme: "Alignments - between the Sun, Moon and Earth; between collegiate #amateurradio recreation and #STEM curriculum; between #data collection and #analysis; between professional and citizen #science. We are preparing for the solar eclipse of 8 April 2024, for which Cleveland will be in totality."
If someone you know wants a 2024 summer internship, they should be looking NOW. It was heartbreaking to staff a booth at a diversity in STEM conference one February. All these brilliant & motivated kids hopefully passing me resumes. Serious informatics & science skills. Didn't matter. They'd missed the application deadline by a couple months. What a waste. My company stopped accepting applications in December, and our competitors were within a few weeks of us.

Good Morning! On this day, (Wednesday) September 20 in 1883 Maria Baers was born. She was a Belgian senator, feminist, and trade unionist. In 1945, she became the first women Secretary of the Senate, and the first chairwomen of a parliamentary commission.
Hey #drosophila new fellowship for underrepresented groups in #UK #STEM, specifically notes "researchers from ... Black heritage." This Royal Society CDF is a 4-year post-doctoral fellowship looking to expand to other underrepresented communities if successful. Awards up to £690,000 for salary and research costs!
If you know a recent grad or post-doc that fits the description, forward! I know I'd love to see some fellow fly folks join me at UoE Penryn ;)
Exciting new student Dream Team in Delft: 'Meet Emergence, the newly accredited Dream Team that explores the intersection of art, science, and engineering.'
Fun was had as we explored the sun's light energy in today's garden class!
First grade students made photo prints using the sun and nature from their gardens. Later they learned about reflecting light to illuminate their teacher's sign. Way to grow!
This interdisciplinary lab project is working on another bacteria based #pollution solution. This one is an eco friendly 3d printed living material engineered to solely target specific pollutants in water then self destruct.
There are too many Nazis in the #STEM field on Twitter.
They tried to be as careful as possible but sometimes they still reveal themselves.
To demonstrate the difference between shade and sun, #BradLancaster measures sidewalk temperatures on a scorching hot day in #Tucson, #Arizona. With his book promoting greener spaces, shade harvesting, and rainwater "planting," Lancaster shows how simple actions can help in creating a more #sustainable and comfortable #environment. 🌳🌧️🌎

Is it just me, or does it seem that discounting researchers who appear later in a publication's list of authors will just further disadvantage grad students and other contributors who do the heavy lifting for tenured professors?
"Scopus introduces the Author Position metric"
Good Morning! On this day, (Tuesday) September 19 in 1889 Sarah Delany, was born. She was an American educator and civil rights pioneer. In 1923 Delany became the first black woman to teach home economics (then called domestic science) in New York City public schools
Good Morning! On this day, (Monday) September 18 in 1912 Maria de la Cruz was born. She was a Chilean political activist for Women's suffrage, a journalist, a writer, and a political commentator. In 1953, she became the first woman ever elected to the Chilean Senate.
DoD's All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office has launched a website: https://www.aaro.mil/. This is great news! Educating the public & providing easy access to information is the way to demystify #UAPs, put the real science in the spotlight & open the door to more collaboration (including with the #aviation community). 💻📊
It’s still a work in progress, but I really like how 1 of my 6th graders coded his Scratch Maze so the same block can check if a sprite is touching the wall using the OR operator!
He also used “distraction timers” in the project, which is an original idea I’ve never seen another student use in a Maze game!

Consider Quirks and Quarks from the CBC, and Prof. Jim Al-Khalili’s The Life Scientific, The Infinite Monkey Cage, and You’re Dead to Me, all from the BBC. All are good for enquiring minds, not all at the same technical level or covering the kind of subject matter; all fun and generous-minded.

Solve the mystery fun 2/2
This is the thin dome shaped golden skin that was encasing the brown blob before the robotic arm picked it up.
The release statement from NOAA says it was discovered tightly clinging on a low sea mount in Gulf Of Alaska.
Working on my garden project is often as much about stuffing envelopes and manufacturing things as it is growing plants and educating people.
Currently prepping student sun print packets for their sun energy lessons over the next 2 weeks! I have 7 first grade classes this year! 🥰
Anybody up for helping solve a mystery?
NOAA researchers were operating a remote vehicle near the sea floor in Gulf Of Alaska when they found this.
They know it is of biological origin but haven't been able to identify what it is.

Here are some fabulous folks active on here and who have ADHD:
Dis is the nicest thing someone has EVER done for me #tech
Myself and other #nerds in my class would regularly our ass kicked when we had to go to recess.
When the bell would ring, we didn’t wanna go
Our teacher noticed that we didn’t want to go
The week after that, we also stayed inside and he showed us a thing called #linux
Studying birds is an easy way to get elementary and middle school students to notice and care about their environment and the plants and animals all around them. From #CitizenScience opportunities to free lesson plans Cornell U #ornithology Lab has a wonderful variety of activities to captivate #K12 learners.

Tomorrow our middle school computer programming class SCRATCH TOURNAMENT begins!
Give students feedback / make suggestions for how to improve! All mazes are 2+ levels!
It turns out that 2 + 2 = 4 isn't quite as simple as we were lead to believe. Having dealt with more #STEM bigots than I'd have preferred, I can vouch for the - ahem - *fact* that even numbers can be rather subjective.
Today I can say that I was wrong.
And the most important lesson of the Humanities is that the life experiences of others are valid even if they are different than your own - something too many people forget. It's too easy to become a judgmental asshole if you ignore that lesson.
I just learned about the COOLEST program! It's called "Letters to a Pre-Scientist" and if you sign up, you volunteer to be a pen pal to a kid and help them get excited for a career in a #STEM field! It sounds like a wonderful opportunity for #ScienceMastodon to do some good in the world. The program is open to anyone in STEM over 18, all around the world. Please share this post, they need more volunteers!
Did you know that both #StarTrekTAS & #StarTrekTNG had episodes where their captains and officers became children? This #TrekTuesday please consider what more you can do to bring #StarTrek’s positivity, diversity and love of science & technology to its youngest audiences — or, to help older, jaded dystopic audiences recover their joy and wonder. #SaveStarTrekProdigy. #StarTrekProdigy #STEM

What do spiders do when NASA sends them to space? They just keep spinning. 🕷🕸
When orb-weavers (Nephila clavipes) visited the ISS in 2011, they spun space webs that were very similar to normal webs. As the spiders worked, K-12 students compared the arachnids' webs to those made by spiders in their classrooms.
A downloadable teacher's guide adapts the experiments for spider science lessons and activities: https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/news/spider
Well, that’s the training finished for this year’s #LettersToAPreScientist. Looking forward to seeing if I get matched up again.
If you are a #STEM professional and not familiar with LPS, I highly suggest checking it out. Through this programme you exchange letters one-on-one with a school students in the US. I remembered how I felt at school, and I would have loved this opportunity. So an org I really appreciate being able to support.

“While many types of #misinformation exist outside of the mainstream, misinformation on science, technology, engineering, and math (#STEM) related topics such as #ClimateChange and #vaccines have had major public policy repercussions. #SocialMedia …. amplifying these impacts. Misinformation campaigns tend to rely on undermining the consensus, highlighting uncertainty, undermining the credibility of leading figures and institutions, and disseminating #pseudoscientific alternatives”
Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter, seeding angst and uncertainty
-A Nature survey reveals scientists’ reasons for leaving the social-media platform now known as X, and what they are doing to build and maintain a sense of community.
“The most popular alternative social-media site that respondents mentioned opening accounts with was the free, open-source software platform Mastodon.”
And that’s how I met u wonderful folks😁
