β€˜Beyond parody’: Saanich raises road to slow β€˜fast-moving’ cyclists – not drivers

One thing I want to add: it wouldn't even make it to the news if the cycle path crosswalk wasn't raised.

Unsignalized crossings are often terrifying because of wide roadways, absence of refuge islands or markings, obstructed views, big traffic volumes, large vehicles. At least some of the issues were fixed here.

WTF Saanich. I have no problem with the raised crosswalk. Great idea. But why doesn't it extend into the car lanes where it could actually save lives? #saanich #bikeyyj

Sometimes what at first appears to be a boring overcast day has some interesting atmospheric and cloud dynamics. This is the morning of 2023-09-11 (07:00–13:00) seen from #UVic #Saanich

Clouds form when water vapour in the air condenses (or crystallizes). This is (usually) caused by cooling (it increases the relative humidity). Air cools when it's moved upward.

Early on we see relatively stationary wave-like disturbances lifting bands of air. Cloud forms at the crests of the waves. 1/2

A timelapse video of the view looking north from #UVic. The sky is covered in cloud at different heights. In the foreground we see bands of cloud appear and disappear but without moving sideways (that is, there is little wind affecting the flow of air).

Later we see a layer of altocumulus appear and disappear.

Finally, we see some strong, shallow convection in a layer of altocumulus. We can see fall streaks, cloud pulled down in a stream of cold air and raindrops, that quickly evaporate in drier air below.

Greater #VictoriaBC #cycling. If you enjoy the new fixed #LochsideTrail at the Heritage Society, thank me (and the #CRD πŸ˜œβ€‹). I chased down an employee and asked them to check it and fix it. I'm also responsible for the repaired manhole at the S-bend north of Borden and McKenzie. That one took a lot of complaining (#Saanich's manhole, CRD trail). Remember, the trail network is the transportation network. Don't let municipalities ignore them.

The newly paved trail. I went from witnessing a crash in a group straight to the CRD and they fixed it!

Here's the Month in a Minute sky video from #UVic for August. There's some missing data this month. This camera looks north and records an image every five seconds. These are converted to daily videos and uploaded to youtube here https://www.youtube.com/@victoriaweathercam/videos

#Saanich #VictoriaBC

A grid of daily sky videos arranged in rows of six days. Each video shows the changing sky as the day progresses. The whole month of videos is synchronised so that they show the same moments of the each day. This month there's a real mix of clear blue sky and clouds. Later in the month some days are tinged with orange (sepia) because of wildfire smoke.

As I travelled home, cycling, I passed a soccer camp with small children out in a large playing field. Lighting wasn't striking nearby but that's actually not a good indicator of safety. We don't get many thunderstorms in Greater #VictoriaBC, not even one per year on average. As a result people are simply not aware of the danger and of the simple rules to follow. A soccer camp should have moved indoors, or been cancelled while the storm was active. Lightning can kill. #Saanich 3/3

It's been a bit dark and gloomy at #UVic today. I know that late April and late August are comparable in terms of incoming solar energy at our latitude. But, I had never looked at it in detail.

I compared observed insolation (power) across 20 years of data here at #UVic. You can see the cross-over point is in the third week of both months (as expected).

Temperature cross-over, the dates in Spring and Fall when temperatures match, is a month later: May and September, second image.

#Saanich

An X-Y scatter plot for insolation in April and August at #UVic. The august values slowly decrease from the beginning of the month to the end. The April values increase. They cross between the twentieth and twenty-fifth of the month.

#Lightning is pretty rare in #VictoriaBC (like, not even once per year on average). There has been a bit of action over Juan de Fuca Strait in the last few minutes. Some loud thunder shaking buildings at #UVic that also shows up on my home seismometer. #ShakeNet #Saanich

Map of Juan de Fuca Strait with the locations of lighting strikes marked.
Seisomemeter traces (vertical motion) showing sharp peaks when thunder rattled the house.

Unfortunately, the motion in #Saanich #BC to regulate the graphic flyers did not go forward, due to the cowardice of other councillors.

Thanks to Councillor Teale Phelps-Bondaroff for bringing forward his excellent report recommending a London-style bylaw that would require graphic flyers to be in a sealed envelope. #ProChoice #Canada
