"As combating #climatechange moves from setting targets to implementing them, policymaking is entering an era of messy — and contentious — interventions. To meet emissions goals, governments will have to ... convince voters the cost of making those changes is worth it."
Keep going Mayor!
Giving evidence at the UK Covid inquiry, Khan said the disparity was “clear from a number of metrics”.
“If you see the photographs of the first ten doctors who lost their lives,” he said, “the thing that strikes you is they’re all people of colour."
Sadiq Khan has seen a lot in his seven years as London mayor: Brexit, a pandemic and five prime ministers. Yet it’s a war more than 3,500 kilometers away that could have the most profound effect on the diverse city. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/11/26/world/politics/london-mayor-divided-city/?utm_content=bufferd6834&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn #worldnews #politics #london #uk #israelhamaswar #religion #islam #judaism #sadiqkhan
Because the other local involved - #merton - had approved the application it will now to #londonmayor #SadiqKhan for a final decision in due course. Thus far #sadiqkhan has proved less sympathetic to #privatedevelopers then either of his two predecessors - #borisjohnson and #Kenlivingstone - but we shall see what happens.
↪ of thousands of vehicles will get scrapped over the coming months, even while volunteers and charities spend thousands of their own cash buying similar vehicles for Ukraine
It is crazy
Now is the moment for #London Mayor #SadiqKhan to amend his controversial scrappage scheme, rescue some moral dignity from it, help #Ukraine as he says he wants to and release the suitable vehicles for volunteers to deliver them where they are needed.

📃 Petition: Send 🇬🇧 #ULEZ scrappage vehicles to Ukraine
Both supporters and enemies of the scheme regret roadworthy vehicles being scrapped when the suitable ones could be sent instead to #Ukraine in their hour of need
Fake audio of Sadiq Khan is not a crime, says Met | … I’m sure the cast of Dead Ringers on Radio 4 are relieved
Police say faked audio purporting to capture the Mayor of London calling for Armistice Day to be re-scheduled for a pro-Palestinian march “does not constitute a criminal offence”. Sadiq Khan’s office said false material was being “circulated and amplified by a far-right group”. A Met spokesperson said specialist officers had reviewed the content. They described it as “artificial audio” that had been brought to the attention of the force. Security minister Tom Tugendhat said he was aware of the fake and called for people not to “repost or amplify it”.
🚨Is Corbyn planning to run as a #London Mayor candidate?🚨
Jeremy Corbyn has given his strongest hint yet that he may run for London Mayor – a move likely to spell defeat for Labour incumbent Sadiq Khan
Corbyn told guests at a birthday party: 'You're going to be seeing me around – I'm not going anywhere.'
But one of Corbyn's friends said he would prefer to stand again for Labour in his seat.
Mr Corbyn's office declined to comment. 👀
It seems that in #London at least #Labour has woken up to the implications of the new #voterIDrequirements . Somebody there has bothered to read the final report from the #electoralcommission and gone on to commission a survey from #OpiniumResearch on the impact in #london - which is potentially greater than elsewhere. Reassuring that this has happened!

BBC News - Oops! Conservative candidate promises to be first 'female Labour mayor'
Questionable relationships between #ukpoliticalparties and #hindutva were around even before the #brexitreferendum in June 2016. Much of the #conservative campaign for the #london #mayor and #assembly relied on stirring up #antimuslim feeling among #hindu communities by implying that #SadiqKhan would literally strip gold ornaments off their womenfolk. And this particular campaign was in the first half of 2016! It did not pay off then but they have persevered with it since!
#SusanHall also seemingly endorsed #Islamophobic abuse of Labour rival #SadiqKhan, campaign group reveals
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/15/conservative-london-mayor-candidate-susan-hall-liked-tweets-praising-enoch-powell #ToryTrueColours #Islamophobia #Racism #England #LondonMayor
"Tory London mayor candidate liked tweets praising Enoch Powell"
My thinking is that Susan Hall is the Conservative candidate for London mayor as the party doesn't actually want the mayoralty. It's too much like hard work, and Tories are lazy feckers.
"Tory London mayor candidate liked tweet praising Enoch Powell - Conservative also liked posts referring to Sadiq Khan as ‘traitor rat’ and ‘our nipple height mayor of Londonistan’"
Say what you like about Tories. When you think that they couldn't go any lower, they prove you wrong.
ULEZ: 'To hell with spinelessness!' | Neil Oliver
"How Corbyn could give the Mayoralty to the Tories"
So Corbyn standing would give the Mayoralty to a hard right-wing Trump supporting Tory and a fillip to the Tories generally.
In times that cry out for leadership, we get followship. Sadiq Khan is bucking that trend with Ulez
"Listen, if Nigel Farage thinks it’s a bad idea, by definition it must be a good thing.”
This is not strictly true (e.g., PR), but Sadiq Khan has drafted a reasonable rule of thumb regarding the nicotine-stained groatshop fascist.
"The Racist Demonisation of Sadiq Khan"
...is standard Conservative Party practice.
"Clean air ‘a right not a privilege’, says London mayor as Ulez is expanded"
Do the residents of east London present an exception to this rule? I have to ask, given Khan's promotion of the #SilvertownTunnel.
Credit to Sadiq Khan for standing firm on this.

I'd like them to look my neighbourhood's pedestrians and cyclists in the eye and tell us that we haven't suffered the hardship of filthy air for too long because of government policies.
There is #NoPlaceForHate in #London,” Khan #tweeted. “It’s a huge relief the #victims are out of #hospital – my #thoughts remain with them & their loved ones.
Of course the internal politics of this within #labour are likely to remain fraught. It looks from press briefings that some people best described as #blair #ultras may have seized on arguments over #ulez extension, #ltns and #netzero as a golden opportunity to resume a #vendetta against specifically #edmiliband and #sadiqkhan that has gone already for the best part of twenty years and has at different times involved the support of the #murdochs and possibly even #berlusconi !
@christineburns ☝🏽this is BY FAR the best content I have see about the #Paris #bikes #greentransport revolution and how #AnneHidalgo changed #urbandesign in the French capital.
While it doesn’t mention the CONSIDERABLE opposition Hidalgo still faces (#sadiqkhan take note), unlike most other reports it doesn’t gloss over issues and does a great job explaining why a work in progress is better than none. #green #cities #climateaction #c40cities #greenpolicies
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan can press on with a controversial expansion of the ultra low emissions zone (ULEZ) which penalises high-polluting vehicles in the capital, a High Court judge ruled.
Five Conservative councils brought a legal challenge against the Labour mayor's plan. But the judicial review was dismissed Friday morning, meaning the scheme can now be extended to outer London areas, as planned, on 29 August.
The #india factor relates to a perception among some #hindus that #labour is unsympathetic to #india - this is something that the #conservatives have played on since at least 2016 when they actually suggested #SadiqKhan would strip #hindu women of their golden ornaments in order to fund #labour policies in #london !
"British housing minister Michael Gove warned on Sunday against making tackling #ClimateChange "a religious crusade", [and says] that low-traffic neighbourhoods were a "crude" tool."
WTF does #KeirStarmer mean by #SadiqKhan needs to "reflect on #ULEZ"? Should he roll back ULEZ in #Tory constituencies and only charge #Labour councils? Or should he roll back any #climate policy because it upsets the #Tories? An alternative could be of course that Keir himself offers a clear #funding strategy to bridge the #costofliving gap to better #publictransport & #EV, but why take responsibility when you can throw someone else under the red bus? https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/jul/21/starmer-urges-khan-to-reflect-on-ulez-rules-after-uxbridge-defeat #byelection
It’s a bit rich of the #Tories jumping on the bandwagon to abandon #ULEZ and for others to blame #London #Mayor #SadiqKhan for #Labour not quite winning the #Uxbridge #ByElection. It was #BorisJohnson's #government and #GrantShapps in particular who pushed the measure through (and one of the very few things I could agree with them on).
