For #NationalGardeningDay: In 1923, Fred and Mitoko Yoshimura opened the Mission Nursery in #SanGabriel. "It would blossom into a major commercial success now known as San Gabriel Nursery & Florist, which this year is celebrating its 100th anniversary." https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-02-26/after-100-years-the-san-gabriel-nursery-continues-to-bloom

Fun ride today, now that the sun is shining and the trails are mostly dried out. Some of the most gorgeous views to be had in this end of the valley, totally worth the climb. 1,064 feet / 310m all in over 11.5 miles / 18.6km.

This part of the climb is primarily horse trail, covered with decomposed granite. Some rain damage but very rideable. Nothing technical to speak of, just steep in parts. The reward is a view of the entire San Gabriel Valley, to downtown Los Angeles in one direction, and Mt. San Antonio (aka Baldy) in the other.

Then there's getting back down ...

A mountain bike leans on a post fence lining a horse trail. Heavy green vegetation from the recent rains crowds the background. Part of a willow tree is visible at the right. In the distance, the skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles are visible. Some houses are perched on the hill to the left.
The reward for climbing the hill: a view down the back of the San Jose Hills and into the city of Covina, all backed by snow-covered mountains. Drainage channels and part of the horse trail are visible in the foreground.
The view from a mountain bike heading down the horse trail, with the trail curving to the right. The handlebars, front wheel and the rider's left hand are visible, along with a shadow of the rider. Wooden post railing lines the left side of the trail. Rain damage along the right side of the trail shows where the water did not stay confined to the (ineffective) concrete rain gutter. In the distance, suburban sprawl is backed by more snow covered mountains.
The same mountain bike leaning on the split rail fence on the other side of the rest stop. Heavy chaparral covers the hillside just behind the bike. In this direction, Mt San Antonio (aka Baldy) rises 10,064 ft (3,068 m) with Mt Baden Powell visible to the left. Snow caps the entire range.

There are more 50,000 streets in #LosAngeles County. They are named after cult leaders (L. Ron Hubbard Way), martyred #astronauts (Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Street), the view of a #lighthouse (Signal Street), and even a deadly element (#Radium Drive). But for the original 44 founders of Los Angeles in September 1781, the only passable throughway was Mission Road, the dusty, ancient #NativeAmerican trail they traveled from Mission #SanGabriel to their new pueblo on the banks of the #LARiver
