Colliding Moons Might Have Created Saturn's Rings
A longstanding question about Saturn: are its rings new or old, and where did they come from? The icy material in Saturn's rings looks young, but it could be old and getting constantly resurfaced. But, new research suggests that they are indeed young and could have been formed from two icy moons that collided and shattered a few hundred million years ago. Researchers simulated 200 different versions of impacting moons and found many different versions that would scatter the icy particles into rings like what Saturn has today.
We hear a lot about the #moons of #Jupiter and #Saturn, but the #moons of #Neptune are also deserving of love (and a few are named after Nereids, who we covered in our latest #podcast episode)!

The Seasons on Saturn are Changing. It's Time to Say Goodbye to Its North Pole for a Few Years
Just like Earth, Saturn goes through seasons. But a year on Saturn lasts 30 years, so each of its seasons lasts 7.5 years. Right now, astronomers are able to image the planet's north pole, seeing the warm vortex storm that surrounds the region. Both ground, and space telescopes have observed the planet, including images from JWST's MIRI/MRS instruments. These observations are helping astronomers understand how the seasonal shift on Saturn affects the planet's climate.

Whether Saturn's Rings are Young or Old, its Moons are as Ancient as the Planet Itself
The age of Saturn's rings is an ongoing controversy among planetary scientists. They look young, but are they actually young or just being resurfaced by micrometeorite impacts? Scientists have asked a similar question about Saturn's icy moons, which could have formed with the planet or were captured icy objects from the outer solar system. A new study mapped impact craters on the surface of the moons and dated them back to nearly the beginning of the Solar System. No matter how young the rings are, Saturn's moons are old.

Planet season is coming back! Was up at Tahoe this past weekend and managed to get a good look at Saturn!
It's not in an ideal position for viewing yet, but it was good enough to snag this picture
Taken with a ZWO ASI224MC on an 8 inch Dobsonian telescope with a 2x barlow. The effective magnification was around 265x and no tracking was used, so the frames were captured over a dozen or so recording sessions back to back where I'd position the telescope, let Saturn track across the sensor window.
Each recording session only lasted about 15s before Saturn would leave the sensor frame.
The final image was processed from around 1,000 frames using AutoStakkert, then finished in GIMP.
You can make out some cloud bands and even the Cassini Division (that's the gap between the outer-most ring and the inner ring sections).
Hopefully later in the season when Saturn is at opposition I can grab an even higher quality version!
I don't use FB much but I do find its memories feature pretty useful sometimes. It reminded me that I posted took this picture of Saturn exactly 10 years ago. And the next picture is one I took of Saturn last night. I'm not done processing it yet! I'll post that later. 🔭🪐
