Today in Labor History May 29, 1854: Civil rights activist, Lydia Flood Jackson, opened the first school for black children in Sacramento, California. Jackson was a member of the black petty bourgeoisie. Her father taught her how to invest in real estate and that business supported her through her life. However, she also developed a line of beauty products known as “Flood Toilet Cremes.” She fought most of her life for African American civil rights and women’s rights. She was the first legislative chair of the California State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs. She was also a member of the Fannie Jackson Coppin Club and the Native Daughter's Club.

I agree with Alistair Campbell that one way to improve the discussion of (& arguments about) #politics is to engage the young (at #school), but I think including #primaryschool children as part of this idea is wrong-headed;
We have already robbed much of childhood's innocence & joy, turning it into an engine of #anxiety & stress (both in & outside school), lets at least leave the politics-talk until they get to secondary school (where, yes, it should be a bigger part of a revised curriculum)
2. This is generally true of international assessments. The last round of #PIRLS was conducted in 2021 during intermittent global #School closures which were very context specific. Meaning closures wouldn’t account for all differences as there were already existing differences.
3. Singapore, for example, coming out on top isn’t that surprising as it generally performs highly. Compare to South Africa where there has been disinvestment in #Education and #Reading for some years.

Anyway, I’m not a Wisc lawyer, so I don’t know about state #law. But except for religious schools, Title III of the #ADA (but not IDEA) also applies to private schools; if they get fed money, 504 does too. So there’s some further enforcement potential there with the right lawyers/case.
