A miniature print of the tiny, fearsome sea slug Glaucus atlanticus, or the Blue angel nudibranch or Blue dragon.

The Glaucus atlanticus itself is no longer than 1.2" or 3 cm, but it floats upside down on the surface of pelagic waters hunting venomous siphonophores like the Portuguese man o' war & then uses their stinging nematocysts for its own protection. These wee beauties are some hardcore little sea slugs.

Last week, I gave an in-person presentation at the #VisionPlus conference by IIIDinfodesign. I used #dataviz, #informationdesign and #illustration to talk about #ChronicPain. It was strange to speak in front of an audience and not a computer. #rstats #sciart #infographic

Poster: The invisible persistence of pain. The poster is divided into three sectors on the left, description of pain. The top left figure is the human body with a bell drawn in the brain. On the left, a red ball shows a point that hurts, and there is the impulse that goes from this point to the brain. On the bottom left, is the human body, with the brain that sends signals to the body. In the centre, the human body with a red ribbon.

New cover for Journal Of Physical Chemistry B! Dr. Alexander Korotkevich and Dr. Carolyn Jil Moll from the group of Prof. Huib Bakker at AMOLF show how sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy can reveal the molecular orientation of anions at the water-air interface.

SFG is a powerful technique which can be used to analyze surfaces and interfaces. The cover represent the SFG generation process upon interaction of 800 nm and infrared light with carboxylate anions at the water–air interface. The background shows imaginary χ(2) spectra collected in SSP and SPS polarization combinations that reveal the molecular orientation of the anions.

Check out the paper at : https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jpcb.2c08992

Happy birthday #physicist Chien-shiung Wu (1912-1997), who came up with a truly beautiful experiment to test whether the weak force conserves parity (whether beta decay would be the same if reflected in the mirror)! In my print on the left I show Wu in her lab & a schematic diagram of her experiment; On the right her reflection, as in the mirror, & the shocking result, that the reaction is not the mirror opposite.

Linocut print of Chien-shiung Wu in indigo wearing a lab coat and holding a schematic diagram of her famous violation of parity experiment (in blue and indigo) on the left side. The right side shows the mirror image except in the schematic diagram. The left side schematic shows a C shaped electromagnet open to the left. The top is labeled S, the bottom is labeled N and the middle is wrapped in wire drawn as a circuit diagram schematic with parallel lines to indicate a power source and left arrow on top wire, right arrow on bottom. Between the poles of the magnet is a big blue dot to designate Cobalt-60 with many tiny dots as beta-decay electrons, the majority going downwards to N pole. On the right, everything is flipping except most electrons go upwards (and and N and S poles are flipped).

Maybe it starts with a low-energy feeling, or maybe you’re getting a little cranky. You might have a headache or difficulty concentrating. Your brain is sending you a message: You’re hungry. Find food.

Sound familiar?

Studies in mice have pinpointed a cluster of cells called AgRP neurons near the underside of the brain that may create this unpleasant hungry, even “hangry,” feeling.
