*I hope the environmentalists win in court!*
Despite #scientists’ #warnings that #drought and #unsustainable #water use could make the lake disappear in five years, #extraction and #pollution continue. On Sept. 6, five #environmental groups, including the #UtahRiversCouncil and the #CenterForBiologicalDiversity, #sued #Utah for failing to protect the #GreatSaltLake. If they win, Utah may have to reconsider its motto.
It's great to follow #scientists - geologists, biologists, climatologists and the rest, but as many of them post so rarely I'm just not seeing what they're adding here unless I go to their actual timeline and check it out. I realise there's no way around this given how it's all set up here, and that the alternative is to look under hashtags...but, if those scientists don't dot their posts with useful hashtags then I'm still missing out. It's time-consuming but often worth it to look at people's timelines for specifically interesting things.
What prevents scientists from engaging in #climate #activism? In a new preprint, Dablander et al. investigated the barriers holding #scientists back from participating in protests, incl. #CivilDisobedience. They distinguish intellectual & practical barriers, and give recommendations for overcoming them.
The authors found that around 10% of scientists already participate in civil disobedience, and that more than half were willing to do so!

Hey, hey! Episode 3 is up! Check out my conversation with evolutionary biologist Zack Blount, who lets us know why #scientists need to read widely—and tells us what makes for good #horror and a good #bookstore .
"What I like particularly is that this is not a book of facts, but a book of questions. The idea that #science is simply the regurgitation of facts robs the field of its wonder, and the different explanations for the extraordinarily long necks of #plesiosaurs show how science is looking for answers. Children are natural #scientists and anything which encourages them to ask questions and look for answers is valuable."
Funeral in Berlin
Ah, well, back to the real world, where I actually have to support my #claims.
As #scientists we will never get #evangelicals & #dominionists to accept they have input into our planets #environmental destiny. As long as they believe some #deity created earth & humans, and there is some grand #plan known only by their deity, they will continue to roll down the road doing nothing bc they believe the plan is concrete and #preordained by their deity. Their inherent fear of challenging the plan is predicated on their perfect deity sending them to burn which jeopardizes us all.

Trust in #science down; trends worst in minorities, Republicans
Pew Research Center showed drop is most pronounced for self-identified #Republicans and those without #college education. Despite decline, however, #scientists rank among most trusted #occupations in #US. From 2016-2021, portion of US residents who felt science had a mostly positive effect on society hovered within three points of 70%. As of 2023, it dropped to 57%. 8% say science has mostly negative impact!
Number of #species at risk of #extinction doubles to 2 million, UN estimates, new analysis has found
While #scientists have long documented the decline of species of plants and vertebrates, there has always been significant uncertainty over #insects, with the UN making a "tentative estimate" of 10% threatened with extinction in 2019. Since then, more data has been collected on insects, showing the proportion at risk of extinction is much higher than previously estimated

Thinking about how #mastodon is great for #academia / #scientists, because not only do science deniers have less reach on this site without their #BlueChecks, but we have servers dedicated to various scientific fields, moderated by members of that community. This gives them an easy way to talk to each other, as a small community, which simultaneously functions as a way for them to talk in public in front of all of us, so we can see what they're working on, and chime in.
That's what's great about #Fediverse: every group can find a space that's uniquely tailored to them, but still connected to the whole world.

Jason Box: "I think most #scientists must be burying overt recognition of the awful truths of climate change in a protective layer of denial."
Jeffrey Kiehl concluded that #consumption and #growth have become so central to our sense of personal identity, we literally cannot imagine making the necessary changes. It threatens us with a loss of faith in the fundamental order of the universe

Let's reach out to all our scientist (and non-scientist) friends and acquaintances and encourage them to join the Fediverse. If you still have an account on twitter, post some messages there with links to the Mastodon signup site. Let's welcome them here and provide some gentle hints on how to be productive here.
