After Brisgein featured in a fascinating post by @Derqui , I headed down the rabbit hole; found #gaidhlig aran-brisgein, a bread made with the plant roots, noted a Rubha nam Brisgein on Ronay, then the plant's #wikipedia article (as Argentina Anserina), which indicates the root was eaten in North America and Tibet. I finished reading Raw Spirit by #IainBanks last night, a tour around Scotland’s #whisky distilleries. After he wrote it a distillery was started in #Hawick in the #ScottishBorders, my home town. They claim to be the first distillery in the Borders since 1837. Maybe first legal distillery. My ancestor in 1857 Hawick had an illicit whisky still at #WiltonDean. Which I view as rather enterprising of him! https://vivsancestry.wordpress.com/2016/05/05/an-ancestors-illicit-whisky-still-in-1850s-hawick/ #Scotland #Ancestry #FamilyHistory #Genealogy #ScottishHistory #Scotch

Interesting piece on the Romans in #Scotland https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-65388673

I've always been aware of this history, as the town I grew up, on the edge of Glasgow, was a major fort on the Antonine Wall. Got young me interested in history, learning that it didn't all happen "far away", but also on my doorstep.

Reading a fellow historian’s experiences at the National Records of Scotland, and reminded of problems I had there 30+ years ago (then Scottish Record Office). I made a formal complaint in writing about one of the staff, who was constantly treating teenage me in extremely derogatory terms, including joking about me to others in the search room. He was demoted to non customer facing duties. Made my future visits much better. #ScottishHistory #Archives #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #HistoricalResearch

A view of the Kings Knot, in Stirling, as viewed from 'The Back Walk' that follows the old city walls just below Stirling Castle 🏰

Details here;

It is both a fine place to explore at ground level with a dog 🐕 and good to view from above with excellent views of the surrounding area... after a short but steep climb back up ☺️

A panoramic photo of the Kings Knot in Stirling as viewed from above on a sunny day. The knot itself is a large octagonal earthwork, covered in grass. The immediate foreground is the tops of trees surrounding the high vantage point which also gives views over the surrounding countryside. Green fields are prominent. Distant hills can be seen on the horizon under a blue sky dotted with clouds.

Very good article here with excellent excerpts of poetry.

Hitting nail on the head here:
'While the dimension of ethnic cleansing and racialised cultural prejudice, stressed by some historians, tends to be downplayed in other accounts in favour of socio-economic explanations, it is certain that the Clearances generate images of widespread destruction and the erasure of people, their culture, and a way of life...'

Bettyhill, named by the Countess of Sutherland (Elizabeth Sutherland) after herself... 15,000 people having been cleared from her and her husband's estate between 1811 and 1821, the Countess of Sutherland built (I assume not single-handedly) this resettlement village at the mouth of the River Naver. I guess my first toot would have to be to let folk know the 'Treaty of Union Articles' (2019) is available in paperback & kindle versions.

#BritNats telling us exactly what the issues are with the union between Scotland & England.

Information that's incredibly still so relevant today.
