I've said this before but this really must be the last picking of tomatoes this year!
Just a few more bottles to add to our winter store.

Ah, yes... today is an anniversary! This photo was taken one year ago today when I moved my RV about one mile from a temp rental lot onto my own property in my own little corner of the universe. Nothing in place at the time but a functioning solar-powered well, a septic tank, and enough electricity to hook up an RV. Much, much water under the bridge since then, and hopefully even more by this date in 2024. Okay, I can hope, right?? 😂 (Whew, what a ride!)

Am reading:
#SelfSufficiency

(from The New Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency: the Classic Guide for Realists and Dreamers)

We can do things for ourselves or we can pay others to do them for us. These are the two "systems" that support us; we might call them the "self-reliance system" and the "organization system". The former tends to breed self-reliant men and women; the latter tends to produce organization men and women.
All existing societies support themselves by a mixture of the two systems; but the proportions vary.
In the modern world, during the last hundred or so years, there has been an enormous and historically unique shift. away from self-reliance and towards organization. As a result people are becoming less self-reliant and more dependent than has ever been seen in history. They may claim to be more highly educated than any generation before them; but the fact remains that they cannot really do anything for themselves. They depend utterly on vastly complex organizations, on fantastic machinery, on larger money incomes. What if there is a hold-up, a breakdown, a strike, or unemployment? Does the state provide all that is needed? In some cases, yes; in other cases, no. Many people fall through the meshes of the safety net; and what then? They suffer; they become dispirited, even despondent. Why can't they help themselves? Generally, the answer is only too obvious: they would not know how to; they have never done it before and would not even know where to begin.

@phillip happy people are generally able to do some things for themselves that others pay for. They take pleasure in their labors, and since they want their friends and neighbors be similarly satisfied, they are generous with their knowledge.

From my girlfriend’s garden:
This is a Milpa (or three sisters) – an indigenous, traditional form of agriculture from Middle America. Squash, Beans and Corn are planted together and complement each other: The Squash’s leaves cover the soil and stop it from drying out, the Corn serves as a climbing structure for the Beans, and the Beans provide nutrients the other two plants need.

I also started a #rose oil steeping, to be used in making a rose #salve in a few weeks.

Oh, and I started testing my #pumpkinspice sugar scrub.

Later today, after I eventually crash out and sleep will be creating more #candles, and crocheting some dish cloths.

3 weeks ago we put a small polytunnel in our swimming pool. Did it to improve water efficiency in a smaller area. Yesterday evening we ate our first lettuce and the rest of the crops are shooting up. Since the property I live on has no natural topsoil (like NONE, just grit and rock that somehow grows quack grass and invasives very well) I have been gardening in raised beds. The standing dead log surrounds that came off the mountains around here have finally given up and will go back into the earth. The new frames are cedar that is eco-logged from the mountain across the lake. Not kiln dried and has the smallest trip from there to here. In fact, it is almost impossible to see the area that is logged and has been for the last 30 years. This way is the right way. The riparian areas are not damaged, the wild ungulates have grazing, the nesting trees are not disturbed.
The raised beds will be ready for planting in a couple of days. This may seem like boring mundane work but for me and my family, there is nothing more important.

Huw is a kind and intelligent soul. His channel rarely has things like this on it. Mostly it is very well thought-out gardening techniques. Here he talks about self-sufficiency. "The key to self-sufficiency is diversity". He is correct. Never rely on one crop. Add as much diversity as your gardens will allow.
Tons of good info on this channel with inspiring beautiful vegetable gardens.

I understand that what is going on in Lake Arrowhead, CA is not normal for them. They did not expect to be buried under 9 feet of snow. I sincerely hope that they receive the help they need. I also hope that after this crisis is over, the residents there and everywhere deeply understand that we are in uncertain times and weather is doing unprecedented things now. The old norms can no longer be depended on.

This, more than ever, clearly is an example of how imperative it is to be prepared. When your life and those of your family are dependent on specific medications, baby formula, and other necessities of life, being prepared is not a mutual aid situation. It is personal. When every person in a community is going through the same crisis, and are dealing with their own needs, it is critical to have thought ahead to what you and your family are going to need.

Pay attention to the weather forecasts and predictions, take seriously the worst case scenarios, prepare for the most extreme situations that could arise. Stock up medications, be absolutely certain you have enough necessities on hand to get through anything and then longer. Then, if you have more than you need, you are able to share. The best kind of mutual aid is assisting and encouraging others ahead of time to be more prepared for themselves.

#ViewingJasperMountain is quite outdated, climate-wise, and perhaps a bit naive. It consists of "blog" posts from the late 90s, mostly. But as it's largely about someone's thoughts while #homesteading and taking a stab at #SelfSufficiency, maybe some of those thoughts will be useful to others.

Of course, we do tend to get what we pay for. 😉

“The greatest change we need to make is from consumption to production, even if on a small scale, in our own gardens. If only ten percent of us do this, there is enough for everyone. Something I did a lot of mahi (work) on for a few years, before being struck down with sepsis after a cancer biopsy and we had to sell our #organic property after I could no longer physically work on it anymore...

But this is still a great reminder of all we did over the years and the changes to our #lifestyle which has impacted both our #health and lives as I carry on in any small way I still can after disability. Some of you might enjoy it: https://gardentokitchenwithsuz.wordpress.com/about-us/

My first two slightly rectangular raised bed gardens at the new place we moved to after I found I could no longer mahi in my huge organic gardens we spent years nuturing. These are galvinised metal (not ideal I know but hubby was too busy working to make untreated wooden ones), they are filled with green vegetable plants, and the soil is covered with crushed eggshells to deter bugs and the whole lot are covered with white bird netting to help keep white cabbage butterflies out. They are set in what was back then a nearly dead lawn as it had been nearly sprayed to extinction with awful herbicides. It is now almost all a large organic cottage garden 4 years later.
