So after spending nearlly 11 hours trying to fix a major case of infra burning on Monday:

Apparently some American from our parent corp decided to:
1. Update/install something at 01:20 German time on last Friday
2. Change the permissions of our smb folders used in prod without informing anyone

We spend all that time trying to fix our server not being able to reach the smb only to ask IT to look into the logs for any activity at around midnight. After that the problem was fixed in 30 minutes.

Why we didn't look earlier? IT assured us that nothing changed on the smb side and that something changed on prod.

SSRF is usually mitigated by preventing any requests to an IP that is not publicly accessible [1]

But in a home / self hosted env, you probably want to allow your local services to talk to each-other. If you run an app that makes requests to arbitrary addresses (think fedi server!) you may now be exposed?

I have 0 know-hows/logic comprehension when it comes to anything involving electricity, it's fucking nuts lol. I'm planning to replace a perfectly healthy drive on #TrueNAS with a brand new, bigger drive. I've an extra SATA port/data cable, and likely also a SATA power cable, so I can pass the new drive to TrueNAS while retaining the old one it's replacing.

What I don't have is a proper spot to mount the new drive, while the old one is still in the build. I'm planning to only remove the old one once the replacement/resilvering process is done. Is it safe if I just put the new drive anywhere inside or outside of the case, as long as it's away from the motherboard?

It seems a lot of them are artifacts of people migrating #server #instances, and a good chunk are folks who went back to #corporate #SocialMedia.

My follower count is now more realistic, from 1.6k to 610. Accounts I follow went from 374 to 259.

How does one even describe the Sun SunRay? It’s a stateless thin client computer aimed at corporate environments, originally introduced by Sun Microsystems in September 1999.

I want to show my server's status (like CPU, RAM, network traffic amounts…) publicly on a dashboard, and with the simplest tool possible. I want to control what it shows so that it doesn't show anything sensitive, and I don't want it to be able to run any commands or actions from user input. It should update live. What should I use?

I've actually written something like this 10 years ago but it's too bare bones and half broken.

I have been migrating my PHP websites to a new server. I only have 9 left. We were previously using a server management tool called Moss. It still runs, but it has been updated since 2020. Hence the migration.

We're now managing our server using Ploi, and it is so far fantastic. Everything is real nicely laid out. Plus, it has little added items like DNS management and a tie into the Craft CMS install for our websites that use it.

I am looking for a modern forum software, which has most of the following features:

- An #api (e.g. #rest) to process data from the #forum and automatically post it again (bot)
- #Markdown for composing new posts
- Side-threads, so several discussions can exist in parallel without annoying everyone else (like #mastodon, #Lemmy or #reddit)
- #opensource

The last days I played around with #lemmy, but it has sooo much issues, that I might throw away the work of the last 2-3 weeks, if I find something better.

When I reverse #engineer a website, I usually use #BurpSuite [ and a few other custom tools ] and expect it to take a while to figure out how the site passes data between the #server and the user and how best to use that information. However, the project I am working on now does not require any of that. The site is a #JSP app last updated in 2006 that’s still in production and used by at least 30k people a month. The documentation on the site is a relic of the past, talking about how revolutionary and modern the #ZIP compression they are using is and how to open a ZIP file on #Windows XP.

So proud of my disk size monitoring script, so I'm just going to share it here as-is:

So, here's my #homelab / #selfhosting #question:

I've set my sights on an eBay listing for a #Dell #PowerEdge R720 w/ 2x Xeon E5-2643's, 96 GB of PC3-10600R RAM, and 8x 3.5" HDD bays, all for just under $300. (Supposedly 3.5" bays, a bit confused on this point as their listing disagrees with the title – I've messaged the seller for clarification.)

My hope is to just drop the TrueNAS drives from the original machine "as-is" into the server and hopefully at the worst have to do some boot repair.

Anyway, the actual questions are:

• I know next to nothing about actual server equipment – is this plan rotten from the beginning?
• Is this server a decent "starting point" for a home lab that's graduating off consumer grade hardware?
• Will I need much of anything else in addition to the blade itself??

@ItsGregory @stux I remember the first #IRC split in 1990; #Eris was the #evil #server then. Next #Undernet split off, then #BT & #Europe split from the #USA in 1996.

There are always baddies, but they don't always turn out to be too dangerous when they're behind decent fences and #Policy.

That being said, #Microsoft #Comic #Chat was pretty dire! Not because MS was evil like #Meta #Threads but because the product was so crap, and they used a completely different protocol on #public #channels.

Sometimes you have to work with what you've got, and I think that's the story behind this image of my cluster at college...

In full honesty, I am still figuring out what blocking Meta means in practice right now.

For now, I've suspended the server "threads.net". I'm not sure what else to do.

I'm still figuring out what to do about the meta threads coming in a few days. Reading and thinking more about it, I'm leaning more and more to signing the fedipact and committing to blocking or limiting meta servers.

I'm concerned about privacy issues, monetization of our community, "embrace and extend" issues, having to deal with corporate policing of our content, and potentially harassment from an influx of users.

I'm curious what people here think. Is there a reason I should hold off the decision or even go the other way?
