Someone today opined on whether short stories are worth the effort vs writing and selling long forms. If I recall correctly, they said they found they'd wished they'd stuck with the long forms after years of experience.
Generally, I'd agree (I'm a novelist myself). But then I thought: /If I had not spent the last five years writing lots of shorts, and recently very short stories, I'd not have gotten the experience starting and completing stories the way I have./
Writing novelette length, short, and super-short has gone a long way to vanquishing my recurring writer's block. It's given me the repeated experience of starting and finishing stories, building my confidence that there's always more to write. (I burnt out in '01 and didn't start writing again until '15, so I'm recovering.)
One of the hardest things for me to get over, which plagued my early career, was my inflated opinion that my ideas were somehow special and unique (they're not), and that I would never come up with more than a few worth writing. Writing lots of little stories cured me of that delusion.
My little stories might never sell, but they could act as regular content to convince people to return to my author website. I use shorts to introduce people to my writing style and to explore ideas I might incorporate in longer forms. I've definitely used it to work out character backstory, even stuff that might contradict canon. It keeps me from fearing the experimental stuff; at least it gives me a chance to get the nonsense out of my bloodstream. Some of this might go into an anthology one day (as if, but I can hope.) In any case, they're the practice equivalent of tossing nickels and dimes into the wishing well compared to burning C-notes attempting a sketchy novel.
This isn't writing advice, nor am I advocating one way or another. I'm simply reporting what I've observed for myself.

2nd time seeing him live. And, oh my goodness.
Reduced me to tears about 2/3rds of the way through.
His #music just does something to me. He said something that reminded me of a #shortstory I wrote years ago about someone dying. Which made me think of my cat's recent passing. Which compounded what was being brought forward by the incredible compositions and delicacy of delivery.

Absolutely loved this lil scifi story.
It is 2091, and Grace is staring at the rabbit in the corner of her visual overlay. It is an Angora rabbit, fluffy and white, and when Grace picked the icon out, she did not realize how much she would come to dread the sight of it. She moves, and the overlay moves with her. A reminder. A threat.

In the middle of rewriting a #horror #ShortStory I wrote a decade ago. Looks like the word count will be reduced by a third and easier to send to submissions.
Honestly I can't read through the original one anymore, it feels way too long now. I padded my old stories with dialogue because that was my comfort zone. Now it has nearly no dialogue and it's distilled to its purest form of weird insanity.
Among 9/11 memories, I refer you to my 2015 essay Packaged Terror, about how ripples of the attack touched me personally, several states away in New Hampshire.
I'm pretty confident that if you have the time, you'll find it an engaging read.
Had I not lived it, I might doubt some of its details myself, but I quite assure you this is a completely true story. And the take-home message is still very relevant today.

Ootheca by Mário de Seabra is about how a dude wakes up with cockroaches for teeth due to a plague-curse running amok in the city.
This was written in 2021 and definitely has parallels to #covid , especially how the effects are horrible but people adapt to a bizarre new world with a kind of learned helplessness like the dog in a burning house meme.
You didn't need a #ShortStory to tell you that, but hey, it's fun and darkly funny.

Yesterday, one market called #SpellCheck an AI and does not want your work if you use spell check. Doesn't every #Author use spell (and grammar) check?
Another claims if they suspect the story is AI, they will block your email, and not even reply or verify.
