I use the #Mastodon website in my browser/s, with #AdvancedWebInterface & #SlowMode enabled. Each morning, over muesli & coffee, i #PageDown my Home timeline to find the last posts i read before bed last night, then begin reading up the timeline. Given i #Follow a fairly large number of #Hashtags, each morning i have a really impressively large "cornucopia" to digest. It would help the process a lot if that initial Page Down [actually tbh, i rarely use that key, instead using the so-called End key] could automagically take me in *one* jump to the last post i had read. I wish the Masto website for each Instance had an extra setting in Preferences that enabled such functionality. π€

Who knew endlessly moaning about an issue would get results?
It turns out the whole #slowmode issue was caused when Sally Kolektiva was leaning back in her office chair and accidentally toggled the "Freeze the feeds and notifications for @ophiocephalic @MsDropbear42 @jdp23 @flowers @Air_Quotes_Comedian @MsDropbear"
It's all back to normal now and I can't express how happy this makes me. Well, I suppose I could express how happy it makes me now that I think about it, but I'm far too lazy to do so.
It's amazing how alive it all feels again after being frozen in amber for so long.
Thankyou for fixing the problem. Thanks to everybody who collectively complained about it and kept on doing so. I'd also like to thank the Academy, my Mum....
I am completely satisfied and I'll never complain or moan about anything ever again
in this particular post.
Kolektiva meta - broken website interface auto-update
My attempts to ring the bell on this got a reply from one mod, who explained they were busy and suggested that I solve the problem myself. Sadly, I haven't the slightest expertise in the issue of troubleshooting a Mastodon server. A followup suggestion invited me to leave. Indeed.
So, if this problem is making your experience here unpleasant, you need to be aware that it's not getting fixed anytime soon. TBH, with the possible impending Zuckerberg takeover and the dysfunction of the network's major anarchist instance, it's beginning to feel like the prefigurative potential of the fediverse is slipping away.
Suggestion that before you migrate, check in with the admin of any instance you're considering about their position on Meta. From the info circulating, it seems that most of the larger instances intend to federate with the Zuckerberg surveillance entity.

One post makes me want to drop-kick humanity into the dustbin of obsolescence while the next post makes me want to take humanity out of that trashcan, dust them off, and say, βYeah, I got a little hope back from a post about a childrenβs author.β
Thatβs why I love this place.
Who knew Iβd be so invested in what people are doing in their gardens? Iβm just glad, in one garden, that the peaches are bug free this year because bird feeders were put out (The bugs donβt eat the bird seed if thatβs what youβre thinking, and was also my first thought).
The little dramas and slices of life people choose to share here create quite the tapestry at kolektiva.
Thatβs another reason why I love this place.
You know what I donβt love though?
Not having my feed and notifications refresh until I hit the reload button on my browser (multiple browsers used, multiple PC based platforms used).
Copied and pasted from @MsDropbear to try and bring more attention to this issue.

Atm, for several weeks, kolektiva.social has been & continues to suffer an IT problem. I fully realise this is NOT a moderation issue, but in desperation i am now writing to your team with this plea...
Please, using your normal back-office processes, would you contact @admin & bring this thread to their urgent attention? Also, if they search tag #SlowMode, they will see several other posts & threads on this problem.
Some of us have been diligently including @admin in our posts re this problem, in the hope they will respond to us with advice on the problem, & ofc a solution. Unfortunately, so far, we've had no response... & the problem continues.
Personally, i feel so exasperated by this substantial degradation of the #Mastodon experience that if still no response & fix occurs, i'll need to move to another #Instance. I sincerely hope not to need to do that.
TL;DR: For weeks, kolektiva.social has stopped auto-updating its Notifications, Home, Local, Federated timelines. New content only appears after users must constantly manually reload the site. The symptoms persist independent of which browser, which app, which operating system, which IP address. It persists regardless of using Simple or Advanced Web View, Slow Mode On or Off.
Thank you, in anticipation, & hope.

Oh this is good, thanks for your efforts.
Mastodon.online is at version 4.1.2, no pattern on versions yet. Still wondering about cloudflare.
We'll get this sorted out, all together. I'll keep bumping this thread & trying to get @admin attention (though your intel suggests a bigger issue beyond our instance). Thanks again for chiming in!
@MsDropbear @Air_Quotes_Comedian @admin @demi7en @cooopsspace
Thank you for this report. If the problem is in fact occurring on other instances, perhaps it suggests a broader bug in the mastodon distribution.
As noted in the OP, sfba.social doesn't exhibit the problem (for me). I note that both Kolektiva and sfba are at version 4.1.1.
Perhaps a crowdsourcing of analysis would help. Are you comfortable mentioning which instance is working for you?
To the various peeps who, in all their glorious weirdness have chosen to Follow ME of all peeps [hello!!]: i presume that this post will/should land in your Home timeline, & that hence you'll get to see it. Please please, would you be kind enough to reply here & let me know:
1. Are your Instance's Notifications, Home, Local & Federated timelines still auto-updating ok, or are you also needing to constantly reload the tab to see new items? [my Instance, kolektiva.social, stopped auto-updating timelines several weeks ago, & it's driving me bonkers].
2. Is your Instance's post character limit larger than 500 characters, & if so, what is it?
3. If you have the grave misfortune to have been receiving my historical posts, you'll now have some vague idea of the typical themes & topics on which i post, & my general tone. In your opinion, were i to move to your Instance, would my posts likely conform to the CoC/T&C there, or should i look elsewhere?
Many thanks all! π€
@ophiocephalic @Air_Quotes_Comedian @admin
@demi7en
Thanks much for your reply & info. Now my head is spinning... initially i thought this silly problem was exclusive to #Kolektiva, but i learned from some other peeps soon afterwards that it was also happening to them on their Instances. I also tested a "spare" account i have on another Instance, which also seemed to have the problem back then, but... tonight & now, seems to be all ok again [ie, its Home, Local & Federated timelines are auto-updating again, whereas for me in #Kolektiva still none of that is working].
Some of us have been including @admin in each post about this PITA, yet afaik have heard nothing at all from them. I find this dispiriting, & am now seriously considering making another #InstanceJump. I'm really not looking forward to the time-wasting effort that needs, but otoh, as i already declared, this problem has partly ruined the "Masto experience" for me.
***
EDITED to remove cooopsspace@infosec.exchange whom i accidentally included in error before [sorry!].
@MsDropbear @Air_Quotes_Comedian @admin
I believe this is a Kolektiva-only problem, and tested a different instance which worked fine.
Yes I feel your pain. It makes you feel like you're half-in and half-out of the community. Makes it difficult to have a conversation in realtime because you constantly have to keep refreshing the browser to see if there are any replies. Hopefully we can get the attention of @admin
@leftistuu I recently installed Vivaldi, but purely to see if the #slowmode issue was due to my browser; it was not.
I usually use Opera but I might give Vivaldi a go now that I have it installed.
@MoiraPrime A small number of users have been involuntarily stuck in #slowmode for some time now.
There's definitely not enough of a fuss being kicked up about it.
I note with interest that Mintpress News appears to have taken down its list of staff and contributors.
I wonder if they will ever make a statement or acknowledge what Randi Lucile Nord did.
I wonder if I'll be stuck in #slowmode forever too, but no point complaining about it. I don't know why I even brought it up to be honest.
I'm making big changes in my life. Being stuck in #slowmode has shown me change can be... yeah, bad example.
Basically, I have my regular tabs open in my browser but in a completely different order than usual.
@Air_Quotes_Comedian @admin @demi7en
Is there any chance that this problem is being caused by, or is at least somehow related to, this problem [which i don't know if remains current atm or not]?
https://community.hachyderm.io/blog/2023/05/17/crypto-spam-attacks-on-fediverse/
π€·ββοΈ
@MsDropbear @Air_Quotes_Comedian @admin
Am I understanding this correctly that this is is instance-specific?
I only ask because I use #slowmode on both of my mobile apps and via the web interface on my laptop. I do not experience any unexpected behavior with it.
Good luck!
@Air_Quotes_Comedian @admin @demi7en Further proof this damn problem is upstream of individual users. Within the past hour, as an experiment, i installed the #Tokodon app & connected it to my account. No timelines auto-updated in it either. I've now uninstalled it. The problem continues, still with almost nobody else talking about it, to my surprise.
@demi7en My attempted workaround ... https://kolektiva.social/@MsDropbear/110382863200400118
Until such time as this weird bug is resolved, here's my attempted workaround:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/tab-reloader/?utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=search

@demi7en Using another account i have there, i've just verified that this silly problem atm also exists on https://mastodon.online, which uses Mastodon v4.1.2+nightly-20230515.
Are no other Masto peeps experiencing the same bug that both @demi7en & I are? --> https://kolektiva.social/@demi7en@infosec.exchange/110294393503555172 π€·ββοΈ
I've just now re-DISabled #SlowMode, to return to my interrupted experiment per my https://kolektiva.social/@MsDropbear/110366145712788079, although until this weird bug is resolved it all just seems a bit pointless atm. π€·ββοΈ
@demi7en Thanks, but i really don't want to have to be using Chromium [it's installed, so i could easily do it, but... *meh*, heehee].
My current pane config is 4-columns; Compose, Home, Notifications & GettingStarted. In my earlier days, before i'd adequately populated my Home, i had a 5th column, being Local. For me the manifestation of this recent problem is that neither my Home nor Notifications columns auto-update, slow or fast, so i need to keep manually reloading the tab. I expect that, if i still bothered also showing Local, it'd prolly also be frozen.
How can this problem exist? We're on different Instances, & my one has not [afaik] updated its Masto version, coz it *still* shows here as being v4.1.1.
Have you seen other peeps posting about this problem? So far, i only know of you & me... which thus deepens the mystery.
@demi7en Your post is amazing, coz i came back to my OP [https://kolektiva.social/@MsDropbear/110366145712788079] just now to mention that all day today [having worked correctly yesterday], my Masto-in-browser [#FirefoxNightly] #AdvancedWebInterface #SlowModeOff has completely forgotten how to auto-refresh. All day i've had to manually reload the tab whenever i wanna see new content. So i've just now re-enabled #SlowMode, but based on your post, it seems that's unlikely to help me either.
I don't understand what has changed, to cause this new problem. π€·ββοΈ
A couple of hours ago, for the first time, i disabled my #Mastodon's Preference:
>Slow mode
>Hide timeline updates behind a click instead of automatically scrolling the feed
So far, the outcome seems tolerable, as measured by the fact that my angry screaming & stomping is no worse than usual. I shall persist with this experiment a while longer. π€
What do other peeps do?
Potential refresh bug in Mastodon's Advanced-Web-Interface mode (multicolumn mode for browsers) when #SlowMode (timeline updates require a click) is enabled. (Both options are found in Preferences-Appearance)
I would appreciate feedback from other Advanced Web + Slow Mode users to confirm whether it's just my particular setup (e.g. the #FediAct addon) or something more common.
ISSUE: Enabling Advanced Web Interface adds multiple columns and what was the single main view in default Mastodon install becomes a Profile column while Home, Notifications and additional columns (e,g, hashtags) displaying running events. When "Slow Mode" is enabled, instead of autorefreshing, Home and extra columns require a click to refresh. (useful for those who are uncomfortable with tickertape style constantly running view)
This all works as designed, but the Profile column has no manual refresh option. Once I view another user's feed/timeline there it will never be refreshed (during current sign-in session) even if that user posts frequent toots, replies or boosts. (Without "Slow Mode" enabled the Profile pane refreshes loaded sources with the latest updates.)
The result is that the affected user isn't seeing the activity that is actually happening on the account they think they are viewing "live".
I don't know how many people use Mastodon via the browser in Advanced Web + Slow Mode, but probably more than just a handful.
the "load missing posts" ellipsis inserts missing posts ABOVE the ellipsis when in #SlowMode. This preserves your older-to-newer timeline reading position.
BUT when posts are missing WITHIN the section of timeline subsequently loaded, the ellipsis loads them BELOW the ellipsis. This breaks your current older-to-newer reading location.
What is the logic behind this #UX decision in #Mastodon @Gargron
@Offroadrj You can slow them down, did you know? The Pause button on the posts. As I follow more people, I can't keep up with the *stream* so I mentioned it and was pointed to this feature
You check SLOW MODE, and it pauses until YOU press to continue, like the second photo
using the preferences #slowMode when viewing the #federated timeline. I was only reading for a few minutes and 1500 toots piled up. I think I need to switch back to home timeline before undoing slow mode. the website seemed to try and download the 1500 unseen toots and hung. I havent repeated this to confirm my conclusion.
Someone tooted about the slow mode and how it slows things down in the #fediverse, notifications and in your feed. That was the best advice ever. I'm really enjoying the #slowmode.
I am trying slow mode to see if that fixes the jumpy federated timeline.
#slowmode
You can turn off continuous scrolling of your federation and local timelines in Settings / Preferences / Appearance. Check the box for βSlow Modeβ.
This activates a βclick to updateβ mode.
You can choose #SlowMode in your settings.
πΊ
Is #Mastodon scrolling by too fast? Did you know about this?
#Tips for #SlowMode . Our Server Admin @petersmithca just showed me where that setting was.. Did you know about it?
Let's say, you are just about to click on a post, and the whole thing scrolls down. You try to catch one, every once in awhile but they roll by too fast.
Peter just told me how to fix that.. Here's a screen capture of the setting in your PREFERENCES. Check it out! Share with your friends, eh?
@everywhereist If a feed is unreadably fast you can optionally slow it down by switching on "slow mode". Go to:
Preferences > Slow Mode, tick the box and click "Save Changes" to activate
When slow mode is active, you will need to click on the "X new posts" link to see a feed's latest posts. They will not appear automatically.
To deactivate, just untick the slow mode box and save changes again.

@historleans Mastodon #preferences #slowmode --> Hide timeline updates behind a click instead of automatically scrolling the feed
Ahh the ease of #SlowMode (in your Preferences settings)... you can control the feeds so that you just click "new items" at the top, giving you time to catch up. A lunchtime investigation worth taking. #WelcomeToMastodon

@LindseytheGenie π You're very welcome! #SlowMode ftw
Federated timeline too fast for you, go into #preferences and check the #checkBox called #slowMode.
It hides new updates behind a click.
A few tips for newcomers, as I have learned myself since joining Mastodon (updated with edits)...
#AltText Descriptions: Please use them to add text to your images, many folks here depend upon them and have been using them for years before we all arrived. This helps people who are visually impaired, and frankly, it's fun to come up with interesting descriptions for everyone. Also, for videos: try to upload a link instead of clogging your server with the file.
#CamelCase: When you use hashtags, use Camel Case if you have more than one word: #WelcomeToMastodon is easier to read than #welcometomastodon - so do that. This makes a big difference for people who are using screen readers. Use WAAAAY more hashtags than you are used to on Twitter. Mastodon is hashtag dependent. Also, it is generally good to put hashtags at the bottom of the post (unlike this post) as it is easier for screen readers.
#ContentWarning: This is important, nuanced and controversial - therefore, important. What I wrote before was, "If you are posting something that might even in the slightest trigger another person, use the Content Warning (CW) option that you can toggle on at the bottom of the toot window. It's polite here. People can choose how they want to view and interact. Use CW more than you are used to on Twitter." I would add, people's lived experiences, whether racial, gender/sexual-identified, or of other important qualities, do not fall under this category. Former presidents of the US, yes, IMHO, they DO fall under this category. Use your judgement. Imagine you are sitting opposite someone in a cafe; would you blast them with your opinion on the subject you're broaching, or would you get a sense of the vibe of the connection first? Use a CW while you are getting to know the vibe. And if you don't want to keep doing the extra clicking to see what is under a CW when you scroll, you can go to Preferences > Appearance > Always expand posts marked with content warnings.
#Diversity: A few people have commented, "lots of white men here!" Well, ok, but you can also find each other by using hashtags like #WomenInSTEM #BlackMastodon and many more including my favorites that I started up: #Desi and #MixedDesi (i.e. me). Start your own if you don't see yourself represented, so others can find you, too. Other popular ones I've seen are #BIPOC, #BlackTwitter, #Indigenous #Trans, #TransPOC, #TransAwareness. Many more good ones.
#DMs: DMs are under the globe option in the Toot aka Publish window for privacy setting and they appear in your full list / feed of notifications (don't freak out at that). Honestly, this still freaks me out. I've started to DM people with, "DMing you here..." so that they know it's a DM. Maybe it's just me, getting to be familiar with this...
#Donations: This is all run by volunteers. Make a donation. Click on the "about this server" at the bottom of your screen (might appear in a different location than on mine) and find out who is running your server and how to make a donation. And thank them! Donating to Mastodon generally does NOT apparently filter down to your server admin, so you might do both.
#Filters: Adding this one in my edits. On your computer (and maybe some apps) you can find Filters under Preferences so that you can weed out content for yourself. Experiment with it. A tip: just add one word at time; separating with commas does not do anything.
#Introductions: Please write a friendly intro and use the hashtag #introduction so people can learn about you. Be interested in others. Grow your community through daily, friendly interaction.
#SlowMode: Ahh the ease of Slow Mode (in your Preferences settings)... you can control the feeds so that you just click "new items" at the top, giving you time to catch up.
Have fun! This is like a big global cafe with many tables to sit at, and conversations to be had. Consider how you show up for the conversations. Check your bias at the door - and it's totally fine to acknowledge you have one. We are all here together being human, figuring it out, one post at a time. No judgement from this table. Use Mastodon as an opportunity to practice self-awareness and kindness in the cafe.
Welcome!
If you're using Mastodon through the website, you can stop new posts appearing automatically by using "slow mode".
To switch it on, go to Preferences > Slow Mode, tick the box and click "Save Changes". (To switch it off, untick and save.)
This will make timelines (including Home, Local and Federated) as well as notifications no longer scroll automatically when you are reading them. Instead, new posts will be hidden behind a clickable link at the top of each column.
(Thanks to @aral for suggesting tip!)
If a feed is unreadably fast you can optionally slow it down by switching on "slow mode". Go to:
Preferences > Slow Mode, tick the box and click "Save Changes" to activate
When slow mode is active, you will need to click on the "X new posts" link to see a feed's latest posts. They will not appear automatically.
To deactivate, just untick the slow mode box and save changes again.
(Thank you to @trinsec for pointing this out!)
