I feel sad about the state of everything often in the evenings lately; inflation, our deteriorating livelihoods, political and cultural bullshit, etc.

Often times I desire to do something meaningful both in emotional and compassionate ways. I don't want to just do nothing and watch myself and everything fall apart.

@GrahamDowns I personally think it would help #SouthAfrica|n #democracy, #civilsociety and #society in general a lot, if #SocialMedia was not dominated by American media giants and their algorithms with their dubious political and financial interests.*

That is part of the reason why I am personally supporting this project and why we plan to be here for the long run.

It would be wonderful if more and more and also a more diverse crowd of people decide this is a place for them.

Scrolling through the timeline and seeing it full of posts in #isiZulu, #isiXosa, #Sesotho etc would be a dream.

@weblearning

* Of course that is true for all parts of the world, but South Africa is the place I especially care about.

Public transport \spaces\ classrooms are there to remind us that we need to bear with the presence of one another irrespective of the differences of what we can maintain within our territories . Ofc we try to maintain the distinction by imposing symbols ,exercising the privileges, discrimination, allocation of resources , as basic as air , water as land . That's what all the hue and cry is about. Like who can maintain what, that determines the rules.
Individually everyone stands a fair chance of being tried for what one is on one's own.So anyone aware enough prepares to resign for #society and be self dependent, politically , economically, functionally. For many it's already imposed in form of discrimination, injustice, lack of #inclusion and #diversity and people try tooth an nails to be #social just to be ready enough for the stage when they are on their own , so that their s no going back . Until then they can be trapped any where from prison to refugee camps to asylums to unsafe , hostile envs to what not
==
why does it even matter to socialize
you dont know , when an why you ll meet your first social opponent , who has better opportunity, skill and intent to socialize ( the last one is rational as, ) he can just make a case against you within his social circle , maybe just expand his\her circle , as the circle expands and onus is upon you to resolve the issue , as the circle on the other side ll just expand nd the case may get stronger , to the point of influencing the judgements which matter to you
what can you do
- safer bet imho ll be , to remeber the judgements there ll eventually affect you if you atay long enough

2023

A year to be forgotten, or permanently remembered, this global social, ethical and moral debt I won't put on my account alone, far from here and far from me are many other failures throughout the year (to put it mildly). This is how it is, was and will be, because barbarism is growing, but the whole world lives its yawns and jokes between the beach and the allergy, the barbiturate and the bicoin, but blindness no longer accepts bargaining, it no longer goes by its original name.

***

2023

A lot of people in business think the higher their wage the more important they are.

That’s a huge misconception!

In most cases it’s the other way around. Those on the front, doing the hard work are the most important ones. Those other clowns up there would even be able to survive without those on the front.

But barely anyone from either group is aware of this fact.

Society can be understood as something that only exists as long as actions are performed, as long as processes take place, as long as we all contribute in some way to its ephemeral construction.

"Social organization is messy and refractory, a shambles rather than a crystal […]. There is no tidy atom and no clear-cut world, only complex striations and long strings that reptate as in a polymer goo" (White, H.C. (2008), Identity and control, Princeton, Princeton University Press, p. 18).

Billionaires are a Menace to Society...

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/nov/20/billionaires-great-carbon-divide-planet-climate-crisis?

"Let me put it this way: if you made $10,000 a week – a princely sum by the standards of most people – you would have to work every week from the year of Jesus’s birth until this week to earn over a billion dollars. To earn as much as Elon Musk’s net worth at that rate – currently $180bn, according to Forbes – you’d have to work every week for more than a third of a million years – that is, since before Homo sapiens first emerged in Africa....

... billionaires are a menace to the rest of us: their sheer political size warps our public life. Disproportionately older, white and male, they function as unelected powers, a sort of freelance global aristocracy who are too often trying to reign over the rest of us. Some critics think that the supergiant tech corporations that have spawned so many modern billionaires operate in ways that resemble feudalism more than capitalism, and, certainly, plenty of billionaires operate like the lords of the Earth while campaigning to protect the economic inequality that made them so rich and makes so many others so poor. They use their power in arbitrary, reckless and often environmentally destructive ways."

So far I've only read the chapter "Bewilderment", wondering if it managed to predict our current media world of mis- and dis-information. It didn't, but is interesting in its own right, especially for this aside, which I found frankly shocking in light of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Post_Office_scandal:

"...we are also getting to the point at which it may soon be impossible to catch computerised errors at all. The Post Office, for instance, has long refused, as a matter of principle, to admit that it can get [telephone] accounts wrong, let alone that it does..."

Those words would have been written sometime prior to 1969. Nothing changed in the British Post Office managements' perception of their own infallibility in the intervening HALF CENTURY.

Levin went on to describe errors in gas bills (the public utilities always seem to catch it) and then said:

But we are also getting to the point at which it may soon be impossible to catch computerised errors at all. The Post Office, for instance, has long refused, as a matter of principle, to admit that it can get [telephone] accounts wrong, let alone that it does; and I notice an increase in bills, from commercial sources, of the ‘punchedcard’ type, which virtually make it impossible to query the account.

Katherine Whitehorn in the Observer, equally bewildered, recommended that her readers send back the punched-card bills with staples stuck all over them in the hope that they would wreck the machines into which they were fed.

Levin, recruiting his readers’ participation in the protest, concluded:

I begin to believe that the computer is not the great god we have been led to believe, but a hollow idol, manipulated by crafty priests.

Most insidious of all in that regard is that when examples are shown, men get things correct and women get things wrong.

There's an inexplicable gender change in the example below. Is it to set up "If she failed to write this all down and wants it repeated, she presses <keys>"?

Sounds innocuous, maybe the result of an editing slip, but check out this old promotional video of male and female programmers using EDSAC. Who makes the mistake?

418 Alarm

SCHOOLCHILD TERMINAL

In Chapter 7 we discussed schoolchildren doing their homework on a simple terminal. In this case they learned how to use it very easily. They were intelligent and at an age when one learns easily. Some older people had more difficulty with it, however. The terminal operates somewhat as follows:

The keys on the terminal are labelled as in Fig. 19.2. Note that each key represents two possible meanings — either the digit for which it is normally used, or an alternate meaning as shown. The alternate meaning of key 7, for example, is ‘divide’. If the child wishes to use a key’s alternate meaning, he presses that key and then immediately afterward presses the key labelled ‘*’. The sequence ‘7*’, therefore, signifies the arithmetic operator ‘divided by’. To end each operation the child signals wages

Thus if he wishes to divide 3 by 14, he keys in 3, ‘divided by’ (7), 14, and ‘end of operation’ (**) in that sequence, thus::

3 7* 14 ee and the computer speaks back over the telephone with a distinct human voice: Your answer: Zero. Point. Two. One. Four.Two. Eight. Five .Seven.One.Four.Two...

and so on up to fourteen digits. He keys 1* to mean ‘decimal point’ and 0* for ‘minus’; thus to subtract 3-8692 from 14-908, she would key:

141*908 O* 31*8692 sel The machine replies: Your answer: One. One. Point .Zero.Three. Eight . Eight.

If she failed to write this all down and wants it repeated, she presses 8* re

The first aspect that jumps out strongly is the entrenched sexism:

A la #GreysonPerry, default man: "As the computer age gathers momentum the ‘man in the street’ is very likely going to be bewildered by it all, particularly in the next twenty years because general education about computers and their usage is largely unavailable today — a lack of foresight we shall pay for."

Real work is done by men: "As we commented in Chapter 12 much man-power would be saved if, when we applied for an automobile registration — or any other kind of licence — we did so at a terminal..." and "The applications for which the professional man may use his terminal are in many cases of much greater complexity and often involve programming."

Can't remember now where I stumbled across a reference to #TheComputerizedSociety #Pelican #book (I know it was on here!) published in 1973 (authored in 1969) but it's proving to be a fascinating read on so many levels.

The authors ask: "We all know that the science-fiction world in which no one needs to work is unreal, but just how likely is it that office work will be done at home in the 1980s or that we shall shop by computerized television? Will our private lives really be under constant surveillance? And will data banks take all the spontaneity out of life?"

The front cover of the 1973 Pelican paperback edition of "The Computerized Society". It depicts the head and shoulders in silhouette of a bowler-hatted man facing left on a black background. The silhouette is infilled with 1960s-era electronic traces in white, on a blue-ink background.

The cover design is by Giannetto Coppola.
The rear cover of the book. The text reads:

published by Penguin Books

The computer is already transforming society. Whole areas of everyday life — finance, telecommunications, transport, even the running of government itself — are totally dependent on computers. These vast logical systems are doubling in power — and indispensability - every year. Yet our understanding of them trails far behind. We all know that the science-fiction world in which no one needs to work is unreal, but just how likely is it that office work will be done at home in the 1980s or that we shall shop by computerized television? Will our private lives really be under constant surveillance? And will data banks take all the spontaneity out of life?

The authors, both expert systems analysts, here take the most thorough look yet at the individual and social implications of the ‘computer explosion’. They show, in the opening section of the book, what computer technology can already do, what it is already doing, and what it is soon likely to do. But they are not naive technological optimists: in the second section they analyse the hazards of such a world; and finally they detail preventive action which must be taken now if computers are to realize the dream, not the nightmare, of society.

Graeber, David; Wengrow, David. The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity (2021)

I have already finished reading this long and powerful book. Now I have to meditate on the ideas it brings...

"Over the course of these chapters we have instead talked about basic forms of social liberty which one might actually put into practice: (1) the freedom to move away or relocate from one’s surroundings; (2) the freedom to ignore or disobey commands issued by others; and (3) the freedom to shape entirely new social realities, or shift back and forth between different ones."

Mostly I worry about the children who have to grow up in this kind of environment. There are many times in US culture where lack of aggression or wanting to solve problems in a civil way is seen as inferior.

However, I think walking away from a fight is the strongest thing to do.

This is why people say if you’re too nice people take try to take advantage of you.

I have found this to be true; if you appear nice at first people will interpret as weakness.

Technology's Ethical Two-Step

1. Now. Delay incorporation of ethics. Let's not muddy the waters in a way that holds back Progress.

2. Later. Deny incorporation of ethics. It's too late. People have come to rely on things as they were built. It would be Disruptive to change now.

🔗 Researchers from Stanford, MIT, and Princeton have created a transparency index for foundational AI models. 100 different indicators are used to measure how transparent a model is.

This matters in a time where a lot of new products and services are built on models trained elsewhere.

Widespread abuse is what happens when advancement of #tech isn't followed by the rise of maturity and responsibility in #society.

Possible solution?
As with most other #socialissues, just give more power to women (at least equal to that of immature and irresponsible men)!

#German tolerance, majority #democracy

(From a previous response)

If they can't ban Islam, then just halal meat, and if not this just the burka or headscarf for women. There is always something to make life hell for #minorities. And now they play tolerant here. 🙄

Or even better, you leave the decisions to private companies, clubs, restaurants, maybe public swimming pools, etc. and "majority people" make the #majority of money with a small hint to the #police operation that I have caused 🤭

7 cops, 3 cars a motorcycle, because a girl was upset that just the queer guy may not enter.

And if they can't illegalize anything else about you, then they mob you in the hope you'll drop out of school, look for another job or maybe just commit suicide. And if the cops want to bust your balls, they will. You know it's racism, homophobia etc. because it's made up, but cops are always right. I could spare the 1000€ follow-up costs, but not everyone can.

And it became so expensive only because I said no, otherwise I would have gotten away with 600€. So the logic is: Only if you say yes, while you get beaten up, you get off gently. 😪

But anyway, the tolerant white German majority society has decided that if they let you live, that this is tolerance and are now allowed to call themselves so.

And by doing so they can ignore that they are actually quite happy that the cops are Nazis and do society's dirty work. Then you can suddenly pretend to be a philanthropist and it all looks suppi duppi cool.

The reality is: growth 2% => 10% #AfD, recession at -1% => 20‰ AfD, recession at -3% => ???

random #thought about #society and #law
1. if everybody keeps to the rules, that frees a lot of mind-space for other things.
2. if the rules are fair, more people keep to the rules while happy

This additional capacity of mind can then be used to do science and engineering and great things for all. Or it can be used to find ways to abuse the rules. Currently people who do the later run higher risks but also get higher rewards AND are still celebrated for it. At very least, that we should stop!

One of the single most impactful climate emergency changes: Allowing front-yard and driveway businesses.

This would make neighborhoods walkable over night. New jobs in local places. Cafes, grocery shops, repair clinics, tool libraries, arcades, and beyond - right on your street.

Destroying oil demand, commutes, and car dependency over night.

This policy change can happen in as little as 3 sentences, according to Hazel Borys and Strong Towns. pHow can we make this happen everywhere?

Check out the full video, "Why Did We Make Front Yard Businesses Illegal?", which shows some awesome examples and gets into what we can do today — from About Here, Urbanarium, and Uytae Lee.

And share and boost to get people talking about this. This is one of the first and most important changes we can make, for climate emergency transitions. From a path dependency standpoint, it needs to happen first too -- making what we can walkable and low energy to start, and then seeing what we need.
