Setting off with parcels today I stopped for a photo outside our home.
Our roof is the only one on the street on which you can still see some of the snow which fell yesterday. This is because we insulated everything in our home.
We also have the only house in the street from which the gas supply has been removed. Our heating now comes from an air-air heatpump.
Due to installing a lot of solar panels we have no energy bill.
There's no car parked on our driveway because we don't use motor vehicles, which also saves a great deal of money.
We have a low income and had to do everything on a budget. We had to save up for expensive jobs and spread everything out over years to get to the point that we're at now. But we live with a relatively small impact because of these measures. It's all described on my blog:

Many solar flares are accompanied by immense eruptions of magnetized #plasma called coronal mass ejections.
But one type of solar flares come with a coronal mass ejection, while others do not.
Part of the reason could be that that magnetic reconnection happens more rapidly in the former type.
Paper by Kazachenko (2023):
In a first, US #solar will generate more #electricity than #hydropower in 2024
From 2009 to 2022, installed US solar capacity increased at an average rate of 44% annually, and installed US hydropower increased by less than 1% annually. In 2019, annual #windfarm generation surpassed annual hydropower generation. The growth of US solar and wind are following a similar pattern, largely following an increase in installed capacity.
STRONG SOLAR FLARE: A sunspot directly facing Earth erupted today, Nov. 28, producing an M9.8-class solar flare only percentage points below category X. The explosion almost certainly hurled a CME toward Earth, joining 2 to 3 more CMEs already en route. These events set the stage for geomagnetic storms later this week. It looks like both the ease of manufacture of components & the current post-Covid glut in the #supplychain are driving down the prices of solar components, while the more complex mechanical needs of #windpower are keeping prices high(er).
So a pragmatic policy right now would be to focus on ramping up solar energy...

A convo with @solar_chase on the state of the solar industry.
This year China will install nearly 250GW of new PV, which is about what the entire world installed last year!
Globally, PV module prices are at $0.13/W, but they're double that in the US. Also, module prices are no longer a driver of PV system costs.
Through the end of 📆 2023 and the first half of 📆 2024, we are nearing a period of time known as ‘#solar ☀️ maximum’. I have come to the conclusion that the only effective way to eliminate #FossilFuels is to do it on a personal level. Reducing my carbon footprint is a lens through which every decision is filtered. It works!
I know a lot of people who worry about climate change but never take steps to personally address the issue. Isn't it logical for us to actually live on the planet as if we intend to stay?
Lifestyle changes, purchasing decisions, and other forms of reducing one's carbon footprint sucks the air out of the fossil fuel industry. This impactful movement is growing rapidly. While we lobby for governments to change the rules (which may never happen) we can change our lives, save money, improve our health, and move the needle toward a better world for all.
No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.
Be the change.
Our collective decisions matter.

2/ DIY Tech
"Appropriate technology is a movement (and its manifestations) encompassing technological choice and application that is small-scale, affordable by locals, decentralized, labor-intensive, energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable, and locally autonomous. It was originally articulated as intermediate technology by the economist Ernst Friedrich "Fritz" Schumacher in his work Small Is Beautiful. Both Schumacher and many modern-day proponents of appropriate technology also emphasize the technology as people-centered.
#AppropriateTechnology has been used to address issues in a wide range of fields. Well-known examples of appropriate technology applications include: bike- and hand-powered #water #pumps (and other self-powered equipment), the #bicycle, the universal nut sheller, self-contained solar lamps and streetlights, and passive #solar building designs.

1. #Wind and #solar stocks are declining due to higher costs of raw materials and slow supply response.
2. #EV chargers and copper mining, critical for the energy transition, face demand uncertainties and reluctance in investment, and
3. Despite government subsidies, #renewable energy sectors struggle with high costs and interest rates, indicating a slower and more expensive transition than anticipated.
This is the problem with entrusting matters of such dire importance to #capitalism -- especially in an age of resource scarcity. As I say in my pinned toot:
**Capitalism is little more than an ideological hangover produced from a time long past when low hanging fruit was everywhere for the taking and people thought it would never disappear.**
That quote has deeper context than most suspect. I penned it years ago shortly out of law school after taking a Wildlife Law class from the, now deceased, Professor Dale Goble. He literally wrote the book on the #EndangeredSpecies Act. There he introduced me to the reason species have, historically, been driven to #extinction -- new technology + capitalist opportunism:
Gun powder killed the mega-predators. Whales? Spear gun. Passenger pigeon? Net guns. I could go on. But then we invented the petroleum economy, and in the opportunistic race for economic growth the decline has quickened by means of the collateral damage caused by #habitat degradation. Which, brings me to my point ---
The ideology that is capitalism was built around gluts. It cannot exist without low hanging fruit to fuel the #consumption #orgy necessary to get past the bottleneck of widespread consumer adoption. We are seeing the problem in stark outline today. Without #monopoly in the resource extraction sector, generating the necessary momentum to survive the capitalist "valley of death" is nearly impossible.
I conclude, there must first be an ideological transition away from the hangover that is capitalism, if we ever want to transition sustainable green-energy. **The fruit is gone, folks. If we ever want it back, capitalism won’t take us there**

The Queensland state grid has reached a new peak in solar output – in terms of share of local demand – with a new benchmark of 71.2 per cent set at 11.35am on Thursday.
The new record for the share of solar beat the previous peak of 69.9 per cent set in September this year and combined rooftop solar (about 3.6 GW at the time) and utility scale solar (2.5 GW), according to data experts GPE NEMLog2.
