Rewriting a post on virtual reality I wrote back in April, then a response to an article that claimed "American teens aren't excited about virtual reality", now a response to the newly announced Apple Vision Pro, which will cost $3500 (🙄).
I've wanted to try virtual reality since I was a kid in the 80s and 90s, when you'd often have to physically go to a place (see https://www.pcmag.com/news/the-wacky-world-of-vr-in-the-80s-and-90s for examples of this) to try it. Now I'm 43, and I'd never pay a company (especially Apple) $3500 for something that you can get from Sony for like $600. And I don't even feel like the game selection is too expansive for the PSVR yet. There's a couple of cool-looking games I've seen for it, but that's mostly it. Then there's Oculus (which is owned by Facebook) and their Meta Quest 2. I'm not keen on giving Facebook/Meta money either. My kid got his hands on a Meta Quest 2, I tried it (he just had Beat Saber), and I did like it. A LOT. I still feel like the game selection still isn't fully there for the Meta Quest 2 either, though. There's maybe 4 or 5 games I've seen that I'd want to try.
I just can't imagine spending over $3k (I can't even see spending ONE thousand) for ANY kind of gaming system, even a virtual reality-based one. I don't care HOW MUCH disposable money I had, I just can't see it ever happening.
I don't think many people are going to buy these things. Especially with the economy the way it is. Rising prices of everything, food, rent-- people are really struggling.
This just really feels like a tone-deaf thing for Apple to release right now for this price. Who the hell is the target demographic??
Maybe it was just planned to be a new toy for the ultra-rich.

#Sony giving up on the exclusivity of many of their flagship titles is a very interesting move for sure. 🤔
So Apple has come out with an Augmented Reality (AR) headset device which:
* Costs $3500
* Lasts 2 hours
* Doesn't take you to a different world, but treats the world as a massive screen for your apps
* Said apps are (as of right now) nothing more than just simple iPhone apps
I'm not going to be so stupid as to say it's dead in the water, because as someone who has a Macbook Pro, an iPhone, an iPad, an Apple Watch, Airpods Pro, Airpods Max (because the Airpods Pro keeps falling out of my ears and headphones have better noise cancellation) I get the appeal and the allure to buying the next Apple wotsit.
But this thing? This thing has zero appeal to me. Not just because of the above, but also because it's something I need to strap on my face in front of my eyes and use for (what it was intended for) long periods of time.
It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Apple kept on iterating on it to make it a success like they did with the watch - I've shat on the Apple Watch on launch, and here I am wearing it, due to the constant health and fitness features.
But I just cannot see myself being won over with the AR glasses thing. They look goofy (I said that about the Apple Airpods Max, but bought them second hand for £200 cheaper than the asking price so that's why I got them - I still think they look like shit).
As an aside, I also play video games, and the whole Virtual Reality (VR) was something I was looking forward to and was interested... until the scene was on its last legs.
I think products that ask customers to strap something to their eyes for long (15min+) periods of time aren't going to do well in the market. It's why 3DTVs haven't been successful. It's why VR headsets, despite all the song and dance from Valve, Sony, and Meta, still haven't taken off (I know this is AR, but still)
And just one final thing - I can appreciate the desire for conferencing hardware, but we have webcams and mics. They may not be amazing, but they do the job just fine.
Not only that, but after being stuck at home during COVID, I really, really miss human interaction - and this is coming from an introverted person. I don't mind a phone that allows me to quickly communicate to others from a distance. What I won't do is buy a device that encourages isolation (like VR/AR headsets).

Eigentlich sind diese Filter für die Aufnahmen nachts vorgesehen, um Nebel, Galaxien zu fotografieren.
Nun wollte ich wissen, wie sie sich tagsüber verhalten an meiner IR-Kamera.
Nun ja - ich bin zufrieden, aber da geht noch sehr viel mehr :-)
Hier sieht ihr auch die Abschattung wegen der Filtergröße. Ich musste mit StepDown-Ringe von 2 Zoll auf 58mm hoch.

Controller grips sounds better. You're right there is clearly some overlap. But I think #Sony can make it more convenient so that #ProjectQ is more plug & play and it can turn on/off the console automatically. It would be more "consolesque"

Hier merkt man auch, wie unterschiedlich die Fotografie an sich ist. Egal, ob Menschen, Tiere, Landschaften, Astro … die Einstellungen sind jedes Mal anders. Und die Einarbeitung ist jedes Mal eine Sache für sich - da helfen auch noch so viele Videos etc. nicht! Da muss eins selber ran 🤗
Und was auch viele denken - es bringt nichts(!), sich die teuerste Ausrüstung anzuschaffen. Von alleine macht die auch keine guten Fotos 😉
Hier zum Beispiel mit der Sony DSC F828 für den Bereich der IR-Fotografie:
Kamera + CompactFlash + 1-2 IR-Filter + Stativ = ungefähr 270 Euro
Im Moment bin ich dabei ein altes Hobby von mir aufleben zu lassen: Infrarot-Fotografie
Nun ja, jetzt weiß ich wieder, wieso ich damals so viel Zeit auf der Jagd mit den richtigen Einstellungen verbracht habe, dazu die richtigen Lichtverhältnisse (und Motive).
Es gibt zwar sehr viele Videos und Blogs dazu aus den letzten 10 Jahren - aber, es ist kaum möglich, diese mehr als einen Ratgeber zu betrachten.
Ich habe mit der gleichen Kamera, den gleichen Einstellungen, den gleichen Filtern fotografiert - und trotzdem anderes Ergebnis 😅

It’s time to get a decent interchangeable lens camera again.
My budget is around $1000, but I could wait a few months and save up more for a truly amazing upgrade.
The problem is that I can’t decide if I want to…
A. Get a recent entry-level / prosumer DSLR or mirrorless camera (likely used) with a basic prime and macro lens.
B. Get an older pro-level camera and several lenses. All used, but likely high quality due to their initial expense.

I’ve begun researching point-and-shoot cameras. Initially taken by the #X100V, I found the X-E4's lens swapability preferable. Unfortunately, Fujifilm has relayed to sellers this week that the camera has been discontinued.
So, while I wait for their event later this month, I'm open to alternatives. Preferably #Sony, #Panasonic, or other #Fujifilm models that might compare.
