Something I have noticed many times and never before tooted is an observation that the sound of water coming out of a shower head changes when the hot water arrives. Google says this is because hot water is less dense, which changes the sound frequencies it makes when passing through the pipes and fixtures. Do you reach into the shower to test for warm water, or listen for the sound change to know it is warm?

There's dozens, even hundreds, of #linux programs in the #debian repo that have no problem *reading a midi file*.
Only a couple can actually *make noise happen*.
This isn't a "does not support midi" problem. It's a "sound system is fundamentally broken" problem.
From #debian, I've tried
- showq
- bristol
- midish (special hell here that requires a config file it will not create even a default for)
- fluidsynth
- pmidi
- timidity
all failed in various ways
EXISTENCE PROOF
**With no configuration changes** I was able to make `wildmidi` play a file just fine. It can be done!
`wildmidi` doesn't support keyboard input, sadly.

When you play a #record - or a CD even - does it spin at the same speed the whole time, whether the #sound is being read from closer to the outer edge or closer to the middle?
Assuming yes, is the #fidelity better when the track is going past the needle/laser faster, as I guess you're getting more information from the track in a shorter time? Or do the record and CD #tracks somehow calibrate for this?

My laptop, now on #Debian #bookworm, (and #PipeWire "just works". That is, music plays either via the local speaker, a USB Audio device, a Headphone, a USB headphone (one of those used for video calls), one or two bluetooth connected speakers or, now also, via HDMI. Without a hassle. It even remembers things when I plug/unplug. It lets me easily (KDE, something in the task bar) change stuff around, and it also has no problem to have one source push to multiple of the targets - at home music usually goes to two at the same time. You can even easily adjust the delay that one of them needs.
No long fiddling with any setup, magic or tools, it just works.
(Compared to the customer laptop that runs a recent copy of the #Windows fuckup that #microsoft dares to name "Operating system" - that one is overburdened just dealing with local speaker and usb headphones and breaks on that often enough). No idea why anyone uses that crap system.

If you're not 'optically challenged' like myself, it's likely that sound is just one of those things you don't necessarily think about very often.
Consider however, the sound of the cars passing outside, the birds in the trees, the engine on your bus, car or train to work.
AS well as what your eyes tell you, there's an absolutely fascinating world to be found with the help of your ears, too.
The next time you're on a train, in the back of a cab or perhaps in a cafe drinking your beverage of choice, try closing your eyes and considering whether you can tell what's going on around you simply by the noises in your environment.
Is someone in loud shoes walking toward you and pulling out a chair at the next table?
Is the sound of the person who just got on the train one of someone who's happy, or just trying to get to work?
Sound-listening can be just as interesting as people-watching.

Musician hive mind: I'm thinking of finally purchasing a wireless clip-on mic for my trumpet. But I don't know anything about mics. Not a goddamn thing. So, here's my question.
1) I hear that this mic is a pretty good budget clip-on for brass instruments. If I purchase this, is there anything else I have to buy? Like a transmitter or something? 2) Is it worth it to purchase a clip on mic for a trumpet anyway? Most of the professional bands I've seen recently use it, but I've also heard it has downsides (e.g., picking up noise when clearing air valve), and I know Trombone Shorty doesn't use clip-ons in live performances.

At 5.30 this morning, a wren was singing outside my window, so I fetched my sound recorder because I need background audio for some future relaxation podcasts.
I set it recording on the window ledge and got back into bed to listen to the birdsong.
I now have a 20-minute recording of beautiful bird-song...
..the last 10 minutes of which features me snoring, as it was so relaxing, I fell asleep.
