Happy Equinox!

(Description: Every September equinox, when the rainy season started, the Inca celebrated Coya Raymi (meaning festival of the empress). This festival honoured the empress (the coya) and also Killa, the moon goddess. The mummies of previous emperors and empresses were paraded through the streets and given offerings.)

#OnThisDay in 1573, INÉS MUŇOZ founded a convent.

When Francisco Pizarro separated from his common-law wife, Quispe Sisa, he gave their 2 kids to his sister-in-law, Inés Muñoz, to raise. Quispe Sisa's son died young & the girl was exiled to Spain aged 18.

In 1573, after Inés had been widowed a 2nd time, her only son fell seriously ill.

A Spanish chronicler claims that her son dreamt that he saw his mother & other women dressed as nuns...

Extreme El Niño Can "Switch Off" South America’s Forest Carbon Sink

Tropical #forests can help to mellow the impact of #ClimateChange by acting as a #carbon sink, sucking up more carbon from the atmosphere than they pump out. However, new research has suggested that a powerful #ElNiño event managed to "switch off" this ability in the forests in #SouthAmerica, which raises some worrying possibilities for the future.

INTERNATIONAL OPERATION AGAINST CHILD PORNOGRAPHY: Argentine police have arrested 12 people and seized a large amount of material as part of an international operation against the sexual exploitation of children, according to local authorities. The arrests were made in the Argentine capital and the province of Buenos Aires, where around 700 electronic storage devices were also seized.

According to the Public Ministry of Buenos Aires, these actions are part of the operation 'Allies for Childhood,' led by #Argentina and simultaneously implemented in the #UnitedStates, #Brazil, #Chile, #Ecuador, #Panama, #Paraguay, and #PuertoRico.

"Five people were arrested in Chile, one in Ecuador, and the results from the other involved countries are still awaited," the #Argentine capital's Public Ministry reported.

The investigation was made possible through the use of the investigation system provided by the American platform #Icaccops, used to track the trafficking of child sexual exploitation material on the #internet.

Members of the Operation Underground Railroad (OUR), a U.S. NGO dedicated to combating child trafficking and exploitation, founded by Tim Ballard, a former U.S. Homeland Security special agent portrayed by Jim Caviezel in the movie "Sound of Freedom" (2023), were present at the Public Ministry's monitoring center in Buenos Aires on Monday.

#SouthAmerica's scorching winter is decimating #crops and threatening lives

Story by Marina E. Franco, August 15, 2023

"This winter in South America has been one of the hottest on record, intensifying crises created over the last year by severe #droughts, #wildfires and #floods in some regions.

"Why it matters: Experts say the #Extremeweather is already threatening critical #biodiversity and the lives of millions in a region where many reside in slums or informal housing with little #infrastructure.

"Threat level: Much of the northern hemisphere has experienced deadly #heatwaves and weather disasters this summer. July was the hottest month on record.

"In South America, the 'hot' winter effect stems both from the El Niño phenomenon that warms ocean temperatures and from man-made #globalwarming says Alejandro Max Pastén, head of hydrological prediction at Paraguay's Weather Service.

"'What's being done so far to stem this is either not yet panning out or simply not enough, and the effects are increasingly plain to see,' adds Pastén, who also leads the atmospheric sciences department at Paraguay's Universidad Nacional de Asunción.

"Extreme weather has caused significant reductions in crops for local consumption and for exports, which contribute to many of South America's economies. For example, drought has slashed #Argentina's #soybean yields to the lowest in 24 years, threatening its status as world's largest exporter of #soybeanoil and meal.

"Increased and irregular #glacier melting has put lives and livelihoods in danger since many people depend on regular meltoff for drinking water and #agriculture. It is also used to supply #hydroelectric power generation, which could be affected as glacier water becomes more scarce.

"The World Meteorological Organization has warned that a diminished hydroelectric power supply is increasing demand for fossil fuels in a region that has 'major untapped potential for #renewable energy.'

"What's happening: Heat waves have hit several South American nations since July, the second month of winter. The average temperature in #BuenosAires in early August is 59°F — this year it's been 86°. Temperatures in #Chile hit 100° this month.

"#ExtremeHeat has worsened drought conditions and also made the region more prone to dangerous landslides when it rains.

"Parts of #Uruguay have been under a 'water emergency' since June because of drought, and that same month #Bolivia had a mix of drought, heavy rains and frost."

"It's winter in #SouthAmerica, but the temperatures don't feel like it.

Book 4 of my summer reading pile. The Condor's Feather by Michael Webster.

It's a #travelogue, a genre I only occasionally enjoy as I often find it a bit clunky. But it is also a love story, a gorgeous elegy to #Birds, to #SouthAmerica, to the strength offered by a loving relationship + to the power of #nature to heal trauma. It certainly made me re-evaluate how I spend my time on earth.
A quiet recommendation in its genre, a book to savour.

Parts of #SouthAmerica are sweltering under a 'fierce' #heatwave and it’s the middle of winter

The "unbelievable" mid-winter heat is "rewriting all climatic books," according to one expert, as the highest ever temperatures for this time of year have been recorded for many locations, with readings topping 100 F.

By Sophie Tanno, CNN

Published Aug 4, 2023 9:51 AM EDT

"Parts of South America are sweltering under abnormally hot temperatures – despite being in the depths of winter – as the combination of human-caused #ClimateChange and the arrival of #ElNiño feed into extreme winter heat.

"Southern Cone countries including Chile and #Argentina have experienced summer-like conditions as a heat wave, beginning in July, pushed temperatures higher than 38 degrees Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) in some places – dramatically above average for this time of year.

"Maximiliano Herrera, a climatologist who tracks extreme temperatures across the globe, told CNN that South America is experiencing a 'fierce winter heat wave.'

While such heat waves are not unheard of for the continent, this one has 'exceptional characteristics for its area, duration, intensity and being early August,' Herrara said, adding 'dozens of stations are recording their highest ever temperatures in the first half of August.'

"August in the Southern Hemisphere is equivalent to February in the Northern Hemisphere.

"Chile’s environment minister, Maisa Rojas, said that the world has been experiencing extreme events for weeks. 'Yesterday it was the turn of South America and #Chile,' she said in a Twitter post Wednesday.

"In the mountainous Chilean #Andes region, temperatures climbed to 38.9 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) on Tuesday, according to Herrara, who described the event as 'unbelievable' for mid-winter and 'rewriting all climatic books.'"

They did not, however, build the #pyramids or any of structures or aerial-visible markers in #CentralAmerica and #SouthAmerica; only #Stonehenge.

I'm starting an expedition thread on our MUDBENCS project, an oceanographic expedition to collect marine and fluvial mud, suspended sediment, and water from the Amazon River and coastal areas of Brazil, French Guiana, Suriname, and Guyana. I will add to this thread from time to time, so please #boost it freely if you think others would be interested in participating virtually in an oceanographic expedition.

Tonight, the ship R/V F. G. Walton Smith pushed off the dock in Miami heading to St. Thomas, to Trinidad, and the to Cayenne. The scientific party was not on board. Most will join it in about 13 days in Cayenne. I will lead a small party of us to transport frozen Amazon samples over land from Macapá, Brazil, through the savannas and rain forest of the Amazon basin to Cayenne, French Guiana. We will board the ship to begin our work on June 3.

The 96 feet, 28 m, shallow draft catamaran pushes off the dock at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the university of Miami. It is shown from the bow with two bright lights shining ahead of it and the bridge from Virginia Key to Key Biscayne directly behind it. Bluish LED deck lights illuminate the decks of the ship, and the waters of Bear cut look green and clear under the ship's lights.

6 new reserves created in Brazil.

"#Indigenous people are guaranteed exclusive use of natural resources on these lands, viewed by scientists as a bulwark against Amazon deforestation - a major challenge in the fight against climate change."

Another q: What is one thing that you think modern women could learn from the women in your book?
I think people will be surprised at how much respect women were given during Inca times. Women and men were seen as equal but different with distinct tasks assigned to each of them that were equally valued...
