I knew about Laika (the soviet dog - 1957) and Ham (the US chimpanzee - 1961) who went to space, but I had no clue that the French had sent a cat, named Félicette in 1963, using a Véronique rocket.

Space Cat - Es war das Jahr 2300 und der Wettlauf ins All war in vollem Gange. Seit Jahren hatten die Menschen viele Planeten erforscht und besiedelt, aber einer blieb unerreichbar: der Mars. Mit Hilfe fortschrittlicher Technologien hatten Wissenschaftler Katzen so modifiziert, dass sie als Piloten an Bord von Raumschiffen eingesetzt werden konnten, und schickten sie zu Mars und Venus.

Die Katzen wurden mit kybernetischen Implantaten ausgestattet, die es ihnen ermöglichten, die Schiffe zu steuern, auf die sie geschickt wurden. Eine dieser Katzen trug den Namen Lexi. Nach monatelanger Reise durch die unendlichen Weiten des Weltraums erreichten Lexi und ihre Mitreisenden schließlich ihr Ziel: Den Mars.

Es war ein unglaublicher Anblick, als sie durch die Fenster ihrer Schiffe auf den roten Planeten blickten, während sie ihn umkreisten. Trotz der bevorstehenden Herausforderungen freuten sich Lexi und ihre Kolleg*innen darauf, gemeinsam eine neue Welt zu erkunden. Als sie sich auf ihre erste Mission auf dem Mars vorbereiteten, waren sich alle nicht sicher, was sie bringen würde - aber sie waren bereit für alles, was auf sie zukam.

My 4 #SpaceCats are done but I’m a bit concerned about one spot on the green one.
The seam pulled a bit on the green Space Cat #quiltsquare. I don’t quite know if it was fixed “properly” but I certainly tried doing a bit of hand-stitching to help give it a bit more stability to fix the gaping hole 😅

1) space cat heads complete; but wonky.
2) I had a thought: if by chance the #SpaceCats #quilt doesn’t turn out as nicely as I’d hoped, I’ll #crochet this l guy cuz apparently I am a sucker for punishment & choosing to make too many “just in case” projects 😂
3) He has the most adorbs #crocheted raincoat… & now I’ll have to learn to #sew BEAR OVERALLS! 😆🤦🏻‍♀️
