Also, I think I figured out the trick to adding colors to the outlines without making them look "broken." Just make sure both colors in the outline are much darker than the shape they're outlining. If you look at the finished picture against a bright background the outline looks like a solid color. But against a dark background the edges of the shape will look slightly smoother.

The tail also needs to be on fire. I didn't bother trying to trace something like that. Instead I just kind of improvised the flame with multiple layers, each with a different color. Going brighter and brighter. It turned out the key to making this look good mostly boiled down to 2 things.

  • Brighter colors should generally go below darker colors, to make the flame "rise"
  • The bright colors need to be surrounded by slightly darker colors, to make them "glow"

the game was called "OUT" back then English names seemed great to us... here you can see which #sprites I used back then...

...Luckily there were also half steps for the ball, so I could move the ball more fluidly with 4 pixels per tick than with 8 pixels in the row/column grid

Eh, maybe that'll be locked to 60fps in the final release build? I'll give them the benefit of that since the last time I wrote a computer game was in 1981.

I suspect things have moved on since then. There's this CRAZY new thing called #sprites for a start! I got a telex about them!

But I can't forgive the terrible, terrible human graphics and dead faces glommed over the top of No Man's Sky.

#HorizonZeroDawn came out in 2017! TWENTY FUCKING SEVENTEEN!

Oh yeah, another new trick I used was adding one more skin color at the last minute just for shading, so it doesn't interfere with all the anti-aliasing work I've already done.

And yes, this really did take 5½ hours. Here's a time-lapse video at 60x speed. (1 minute = 1 hour)

Pixel art of a warning icon. One with smooth anti-aliasing outside of its outline. And one with a simple jagged outline.

In my recent pictures I've been going back and forth about whether to use "broken" outlines with antialising... or solid single color outlines. Lately I've been starting to prefer using solid outlines.

"Broken" outlines add other colors to smooth out the inner shapes but they sometimes look bad against bright backgrounds.

"Solid" single color outlines contrast better but the line-thickness can look uneven.

Today I was making an icon and realized that adding external anti-aliasing fixes the problem with broken outlines. The irony is that traditionally outlines act like a thin piece of background that travels with a sprite to guarantee that it contrasts against any background. So if an outline starts relying on the background to look good that kind of defeats the purpose.

Anyway, my conclusion is to only use broken outlines with translucent external pixels to smoothly blend it with backgrounds. Otherwise, just stick to solid color outlines.

So, over the time that I've been working on this cursed game, my sprite drawing ability has gotten better.

One of the things I've meant to do since version 0.1 (3 years ago) was do a pass on the elemental shields. Especially the Fire and Electric shields.

The first GIF has the old versions of the shields. The second one has the new Fire and Electric, with a slightly modified Basic shield.

Bubble Shield was the last one I did and looks fine, honestly.

Looks like this will be easy. The only quirk is that the window's gradient is drawn behind the borders, so I have to use Photoshop to manually add a gradient to the border images to create the illusion that they're getting affected by the shading.

Say I'm drawing the 16-character text "Hello Fediverse!" using a proportional #PixelFont on #NES, #GameBoy, #ZXSpectrum, #MSX, or #MasterSystem. Because these #RetroGaming platforms' graphics chips can't display 16 #sprites (moving objects) horizontally across the screen, I need to pack the glyphs (pictures of characters) into the 8×8-pixel background tiles that they can display.

Each glyph consists of pixels and an advance width. The pixels define its shape, and the width tells how far to move the "pen" forward after drawing the glyph to a line buffer. To draw a glyph that doesn't line up with the tile grid, a text plotter first shifts each row of pixels in the glyph to the right by a few bits, resulting in two 8×8-pixel tiles, and then combines the bits with the bits already in the buffer using bitwise OR. After all 16 glyphs are drawn, the text covers 9 tiles.

You see 16 glyphs ("Hello Fediverse!" with glyph boundaries marked in alternating colors); PPU sees 9 tiles (same string, with marked boundaries of 8×8-pixel tiles that cut between and through letters). Glyphs are shifted relative to the 8×8-pixel tile grid. (Staggered across four rows, showing their lack of alignment)
Buffer contains picture of "H". Glyph to draw is "e" at offset 6 pixels. This is an 8×8-pixel tile in binary. Shift the data right 6 bits, and "e" covers two tiles. These get combined into the buffer with the data already there using bitwise OR.

Here's the results of an experiment converting 2D pixel art to 3D scenes. I used Chrono Trigger assets to recreate parts of the Cathedral setting from the game in a real-time 3D scene.

And! Sprite now has support for 32x32 pixel canvases. (There is no check to make sure your terminal is big enough, so make sure it is before launching Sprite if you want the larger canvas.)

Hey all! You can catch up with my project by exploring this one pack filled with nearly everything I've made this year!

There were upload size limits 😅 so in the future I'll have to set up a drop box where you can download the game assets I made and I'll keep it up to date.
