All the bad feelings I had with #StageManager in iPadOS 16 have almost disappeared on 17.

Maybe this time 🤞🏻

Funny how they don’t show #StageManager on #macos. 😂 #wwdc

I currently have a USB-C hub that works well with my iPad. It has power pass-through to keep my iPad charged, 4K/60hz HDMI output (for #StageManager), USB-A ports for various accessories/storage and an SD card slot. While I can just use that and some run-of-the-mill audio/MIDI interface, I'm hoping I can collapse down to just a single box for simplicity. #MusicTech #AudioRecording #iPadStudio

I feel like there’s a good chance #apple will put either #StageManager with external display support (like #Samsung #Dex ) and/or #LogicPro/#FinalCutPro on the #iPhone 15 Pro line and make it exclusive to them

imo the update to #macOS #Ventura brought one of the biggest productivity enhancements of any OS release in years: #stageManager!

i love it so much. combined with HazeOver i love not having distracting things everywhere, i have on the peripheral a shelf where i can see when changes have happened or my tail starts producing logs, that sort of thing. i love it. i use it on macOS and #iPadOS and as a fan of virtual desktops and using pagers for over 20 years this is great.

I'm liking #StageManager enough to continue using it but i think it needs something like a 'child windows ignore stages' or even a user definable ‘this app can ignore stages' setting.

I'll quite often get a new email window for example take centre stage which isn't ideal.

Or being able to say ‘Settings’ can ignore stages so it can float and i don’t have to pull the other app i was working in.

Or, being able to open an app into a stage with a drag from the dock. (Maybe make removing app icons a right click only action)

This has been #macOS hot takes. Tune in for other observations at 7.

But to be fair: #StageManager looks like a missed opportunity to me. The goal it's trying to solve is to make work more focused & finding correct windows easier. This is *exactly* what desktops are for. So instead of fixing an existing paradigm by improving it's screaming UX flaws, they decided to invent same-same-but-different and give it shiny new sticker.

I've been making a conscious effort to use #stagemanager with two very large displays over the past week, and I think #apple's intent was to make it into a sort of “visual #spaces for the masses”, grouping apps by context/task visually instead of hiding them in a separate space.

As such, it is a complete and dismal failure usability-wise, because:

Showed my coworker how #StageManager works on iPadOS and didn’t realize I had my subreddits showing… 🫣🫠😅

We’ll have to wait and see, but I’ve always said Stage Manager was developed with this device in mind.

“Many iPad apps from the App Store will be able to run on the headset, either automatically or with slight modifications.”

It’s nice to see iPads supporting an external monitor and I’ve come to like #StageManager on my #iPad and MacBook, but the iPad simply isn’t a #laptop replacement, by far. After connecting a #keyboard and #mouse it quickly becomes clear that #iPadOS is unable to function like a desktop OS. It can not understand arrow keys, the mouse is not intuitive, which is to say it doesn’t act like a typical mouse pointer. It’s better than years ago, but has a long way left to become a laptop replacement.

I sometimes wish apps other than #Safari, such as #Pages, supported #TabGroups so I that could easily switch to a bunch of documents I’m using for a particular project without having to open each of them individually. But then isn’t that what #StageManager is for?

Unfortunately, SM fails to do that because SM window layouts (unlike Safari tab groups) do not persist between logins. I hope #Apple will fix this and make SM genuinely useful in the next version of #macOS, but I’m not holding my breath. #UX #UXFail

Something I noticed about #macOS #StageManager recently:

Without Stage Manager (the behavior people are familiar with): “Cycle Through Windows” (shortcut: ⌘ + `) ONLY cycles through the current app’s windows.

With Stage Manager: “Cycle Through Windows” cycles through all windows (even from different apps) that are “on the stage”.

Thanks to a dead MacBook, I now have firsthand experience how utterly crap #StageManager is on #iOS when using an external monitor and mouse/keyboard. Windows do what they want, the mouse cursor jumps to the top left corner every three seconds, the iPad forgets any screen setup config after each disconnect, etc. How did anyone over at #Apple give the green light on shipping this?

@hello_buckers I'm using it intermittently on #macOS with mixed results. It's helpful if I need to hunker down and focus on a task without distraction... but it's buggy.

#StageManager #Apple #iPadOS

I might have just found THE reason to use Apple's #StageManager: #ADHD.
When I use my Mac I use it like a Windows' machine: dock visible and the current window takes up the entire screen. Sadly I tend to forget what apps I've currently open and, to make matters even worse, if I switch to an app like "Music", I instantly forget what I was doing just a second ago. UNLESS, I use StageManager. I can't forget what I was doing because I "can't" hide it.

A super underrated feature of #StageManager is the ability to run both iPhone apps and apps that don’t support Split View all at the same time! Here I have 2 iPad apps that have never supported ‘classic’ iPad multitasking and an iPhone app all in one work space 🔥

I'm really trying to like #macOS
#StageManager
but it's so un-intuitive...

Today I noticed that TABS of Terminal can be "pinned" to different stages. In other words, switching tabs in a single Terminal window switches stages (all the other windows) behind it.

I don't know how I did this or even that it could be done. It's just so weird!

Before #stageManager on the Mac, I was manually creating a somewhat similar experience where I would give every app its own virtual desktop. It worked for my brain, but it was always a bit of a pain to maintain. And using the iPad without being able to see the dock while running an app just felt broken.

Stage Manager has been such a huge breath of fresh air for me on both platforms in terms of daily usability.

I've been using #StageManager on my M2 Air since #macOS #Ventura came out.

With #BetterTouchTool, I set up a few really helpful gestures:

1: 2-finger swipe right on a minimized window adds it to a set (simulates ⇧-click)*
2: 2-finger swipe left on the app drawer pushes the current window back into the app drawer (simulates ⌘-M)*
3: 4-finger swipe right/left cycles through app sets (action in BTT)

#stagemanager on #macos wishes - I’d love more slots, but also an “everything else” slot where all the extras live. And dragging windows between slots, and the ability to restack/rotate a slots content and… Oh and lock a slot. But then is there even an API for Stage Manager? Are the Magnet, Tiles, Moom…et al folk looking at this?

Why are people pretending that #StageManager on #macOS 'finally' allows people to manage all their open applications. Are they just pretending they haven't had the ability to switch between multiple desktops for years?

A screenshot of the Stage Manager feature on Mac OS. It creates a set of thumbnail shortcuts on the left of the screen to groups of applications, allowing you to quickly switch between the groups.

@gxgyang My main problem is that it’s a multi-step process to launch an app and have it join the currently-displayed windows. #StageManager always wants to put the app in a new group and hide your current one. - I cannot see any text scaling options for this display.
- I cannot use the monitor audio output

After about a day I've come to the realization that the fixed position of #StageManager on the left-hand side of #MacOS #Ventura means I won't be using it much. Hopefully #Apple decides to allow us a bit more flexibility on the screen position where Stage Manager can appear from. I won't be holding my breath though.

Rajdeep Singha

And what even is the difference between the two? Also, there is minimising, and hiding, and #StageManager and what not. Am I supposed to use my computer like an iPad or a laptop???

Keith Wilson

@scottjenson Yes. I’m all for simplification, but #StageManager seems to remove useful functionality rather than add it. It would better if SM did more for you, like reorganising and sizing your windows in a sensible way. Unfortunately the iPad implementation of this is more annoying than useful, since sizing options are limited and you can’t easily override the positioning it provides (try using it with picture-in-picture playing, for example!).

There’s the kernel of a good idea here, but much as I’ve tried to like it, I feel like #Apple needs to go back to the drawing board and reconsider what and who it’s actually for.

Scott Jenson

OK, I've been using #StageManager for a few days now and it's pretty much driving me crazy. I have this HUGE display and I'm switching apps like I'm on an iPad. Yes, it's possible open >1 window at a time, but it's a 'special case'

Just feels like a half baked iPad #UX concept, designed for small screens instead of something a desktop needs: a system that takes advantage of a large screen.

David Chartier

I like #StageManager for #Mac so far, but it definitely needs some polish.

There's too much friction when adding a new app to the current Group. Working on multiple displays wonky in lots of little ways, feels like it wasn't tested much.

But overall I like the feature, it fits the way I work with groups of apps. #Apple

Mark Gardner

@pixel I tried #macOS #Ventura’s Stage Manager for a couple of weeks. I work both on my 16” MBP display alone and with an attached 5K external display.

I turned it off. I was spending *more* time managing windows by dragging them in and out of different groups, with new windows automatically shuttling currently visible ones off to the side in a separate group instead of keeping everything together.

#StageManager, like #Spaces before it, needs better memory about the windows it’s organizing.

David Chartier

Other people using #StageManager on #macOSVentura: Is there a way to open a new app directly into the current group?

AFAICT, I need to:

- Open the new app, which minimizes my current group
- Click my group to bring it back to the foreground
- Mouse to the left side of my display to toggle Stage Manager
- Drag the new app into my current group

This feels... clunky. Am I missing a trick here? #Apple #TechSupport #Mac

@scottjenson Right. I have to say I’m genuinely baffled as to who #StageManager is supposed to appeal to. It doesn’t give #iPad users enough of a desktop-like experience, and it hobbles the existing #macOS one. Perhaps it’s simply designed to sell more, and larger screen, devices. But that seems very un-#Apple (even though they are of course driven my commercial motives). Overall, it seems like a solution in search of a problem rather than a hybrid of the best of both platforms.

Scott Jenson

@keithwilson It feels like such a backwards way to approach the problem: "Bring desktop-switching to iOS but ignore everything we've learned".

Apple is effectively abandoning the desktop, trying so hard to make everything iOS first, desperate to make the desktop irrelevant. I'm not against iOS, I'm just saying it could be MORE aggressive, trying even harder. #StageManager just feels like it was designed with 2 hands tied behind it's back.

First disappointing experience with #StageManager on #Mac: I had maybe 5-6 apps together in a... Stage? What do we call these?

Restarted, and only 2 of them came back together on one Stage. The others were all kicked out on their own. I had to manually drag them back onto my main Stage of work.

Not sure if bug, intended behavior, or apps need updates. My bet is bug since 2 apps came back together. Do apps need to do anything to support Stage Manager? #Apple
