As I’ve learned since 2020, these endowments are fairly useless because they’re already earmarked for specific purposes, not bailing out the athletic department.

Majority of UNC trustees ‘strongly’ oppose ACC expansion
“The travel distances for routine in-conference competitive play are too great ... to make sense for our student-athletes, coaches, alumni and fans. ... The economics of this newly imagined transcontinental conference do not sufficiently address the income disparity ACC members face.”
I’m back being my daughters ‘help get you a internship or experience in a lab’ coach!
Thanks for all the offers of help last time. She didn’t find anything but I’ve since understood a lot more about what she wants to do - more chemistry than biology apparently, immunology research related and (if by some miracle someone in this network is connected) ideally at #Stanford biosciences department which is close to Foothill community college where she’s studying. There was a program being run for an internship which was exactly that - helping community college students get experience at Stanford but sadly she didn’t get in.
So if you can help a very hard working, keen student get some hands experienced in this field, let me know - she’s here, waiting, and trying not to get too deflated during the search. 😊

Sources: #ACC presidents have scheduled a call tonight to discuss — and potentially vote on — adding #Stanford, #Cal and #SMU. Still tentative on whether the vote will occur or what result would be, but this is moving toward the finish line. First reported by @RossDellenger

Simply fascinating that #SMU got itself into the #ACC expansion discussion by effectively offering to subsidize the additions of #Stanford and #Cal by taking zero media money for 7(!) years. This is bizarro world even by conference realignment standards.

Source confirms to @TheAthletic that the ACC is (again) seriously considering adding #Stanford, #Cal and #SMU. A group of ACC presidents met Wednesday morning to discuss finances, as ESPN first reported. More meetings, including ADs, are expected to occur this week.
I just hope someone at ESPN, Fox Sports, or the various conferences feels some shame at the thought that they’re effectively kicking the winner (by 29 points!) of the Rose Bowl just seven years ago out of Power Five football, because they’re not a big enough TV draw. This sport is sick. #cfb #Stanford https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Rose_Bowl

Tuesday column: when #FloridaState and #Clemson might hit the bricks (to where is another story). Plus the “big guns” from the political realm lobbying for #Stanford and #SMU, and which #ACC AD is considered the “loose block in the Jenga tower”?
Reading that article about how sleazy college football has become, with third-party groups lining up NIL deals for athletes as if they were big-time sports agents, I’m ready to say cut the fucking cancer entirely. #Stanford should just drop football altogether and fund the rest of its sports programs — the genuine sports, at which it excels — from the university’s enormous endowment. Hell, I’d chip in some alumni bucks. Better that than selling their soul to goddamned ESPN and Fox Sports. #cfb

Peter Thiel and David Sacks writing in to alumnus mag to suggest doing away with affirmative action because there is no racism at (magic) #Stanford. 🤡

"This reporting I don't think could have happened without that. Especially after we began receiving legal threats from Tessier-Lavigne. I certainly think the fact that we are independent made it possible for us to keep digging."
"The report noted that Tessier-Lavigne had not followed up for seven years on unpublished corrections to two of his papers in Science, concluding that “Dr. Tessier-Lavigne did not have an explanation for deciding to not follow up on the corrections beyond that he has a practice of drafting many emails to see how they read but only sends a portion of them and that he concluded the communication was unnecessary,” the report said. “To date, the scientific record remains uncorrected.”
Stanford President, February 17, 2023:
"The [Stanford] Daily article is replete with falsehoods and betrays a misunderstanding of science and the scientific process."
Such smug. Continues:
"I am confident that a full airing of the facts will vindicate my position."
Stanford President, July 19, 2023:
"I have made the decision to step down as President"
I’m curious how the whole debacle reads to those outside of the #Stanford community (where I work). Does it come across as negligence of the soon-to-be-former president? Something more sinister?
Also floored that it was a freshman student reporter who broke the story and kept up the pressure…Theo Baker will still(!) be a freshman technically when MTL resigns 8/31.
Just published at Patterns:
Authors from #Stanford show that online detectors for #AI generated content are systematically biased against non-native English speakers. “Hybrid working appears to have no impact on productivity but is also popular with firms because it improves employee recruitment and retention”
I fully support the hybrid work model. For many of today’s jobs, there’s little reason for employees to work at the office 5 days a week. 2-3 days at the office is a good balance.
