The goal of Texas's #Death #Star bill is simple:

Lost Ancient Sky Map Discovered at Greek Monastery

A map of the night sky created by the ancient Greek astronomer #Hipparchus was recently discovered at St. Catherine Monastery on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.

Hidden beneath Christian texts, scholars have discovered what seems to be part of the long-lost #star #catalog of Hipparchus—believed to be the earliest known attempt to map the entire sky.

A superb cover for this issue of the Nature Astronomy Journal, featuring a Tidal Disruption Event (TDE) triggered by a star passing close to a supermassive black hole.

Such a TDE has been found to be the likely source of a high energy neutrino observed by the IceCube neutrino detector array.

This is an #exoplanet (β pic b) orbiting its host #star.

The #planet is directly observed over 17 years by various instruments with different size of coronographs (the black disk in the #instrument occulting the star).

From 2004 to 2010 and from 2016 to 2018, the planet is too close to the star such as it is also behind the #coronograph.

β pic b is a young (12Myr) massive planet (~10M_jup) with period of ~20 yr 🪐

Life around an ill-tempered red dwarf #star is no fun for accompanying newborn #planets.

Entangled magnetic fields cause a red dwarf to spit out "super-flares" that are 100 to 1000 times more powerful than similar flares seen on our Sun.

That is coupled with blistering #ultraviolet radiation requiring any of the star system's inhabitants to use "Sunscreen 5,000."

One of the nearest and most violent examples is AU Microscopii.

A star that has sides made of different elements? The #whitedwarf #star, nicknamed #Janus, has one side composed entirely of hydrogen and the other made entirely of helium. Astronomers have previously detected evidence of white dwarf stars evolving from hydrogen to helium or vice versa but have never seen a star in the middle of such a change. The mechanism for that change is unclear but may be linked to the star's magnetic field.

Good siblings share stuff, and ALMA may have just spotted that in the young planetary system PDS70! We know there are two planets there, and astronomers have found a cloud of debris that could be sharing its orbit with one of the planets. The cloud is in one of the so-called Lagrangian points, trapped by the joint pull of the #star and the #planet. In a few years we'll know if both objects indeed co-orbit around the star.

Data from the exoplanet mission #Cheops has led to the surprising revelation that an ultra-hot #exoplanet that orbits its host star in less than a day is covered by reflective clouds of metal, making it the shiniest exoplanet ever found.

LTT9779 b’s high albedo came as a surprise because the planet’s side facing its star is estimated to be around 2000 °C.

No other #planets of this size and mass have been found to orbit so close to their #star.

I made this magical star field sky animation featuring Octet the wandering wizard a while back and thought I'd share with you today.

I created the entire thing in Blender - even the sky, which is procedurally rendered using shader nodes.

The wizard and hill he's standing on were created with Blender's grease pencil, which I'm still getting used to.

Extraterrestrial #life has the potential to exist on distant #exoplanets inside the terminator zone, which is a ring on #planets that have one side that always faces its #star and one side that is always dark.

Such planets are common because they exist around stars that make up about 70 percent of the stars seen in the night sky—so-called M-dwarf stars, which are relatively dimmer than our sun.

There is nothing like this ball of stars in our Milky Way Galaxy.

The #star cluster NGC 1850's size and shape are reminiscent of the many ancient globular star clusters which roam our #galaxy's halo. But the stars are all too young, making it a type of star cluster with no known counterpart.

NGC 1850 is also a double star cluster, with a second, compact cluster of stars visible here just to the right of the large cluster's center.
