Super-crappy picture I just got of the #Starlink G2-10 train when it passed south of #Bochum, Germany, exactly 15 hours after launch - there was a scaffolding in the way and they were faaast at only 222 x 332 km altitude, so hard to track. Image at ISO 1600 with 1/3.2 sec at f/2.8 - the #satellites should be point sources of course ... but they were *much* brighter than the 3.4 mag. predicted by https://heavens-above.com/passdetails.aspx?&satid=76274&mjd=60095.8780061994 with about 1st magnitude. Tomorrow back at the same time but 12° lower.

First time trying Starlink broadband. Hardly blazing fast, and there are lots of reliability issues where websites or streaming media don't load. But we're in a very rural spot, and our Airbnb host is in love compared to earlier options.

It's amazing what you can see with your your #nakedeye when doing #amateurastronomy like this. Even when 2 streetlamps are 50-100ft away and theres trees everywhere.

SURPRISE GEOMAGNETIC STORM: Surprising forecasters, a crack opened in Earth's magnetic field on May 19th. #Solar wind poured through the gap, sparking a G2-class #geomagnetic storm. Naked-eye auroras were visible across many northern-tier US states while photographic auroras descended as far south as Missouri (latitude +40.2N):

@a @alienghic What kind of ISP situation do you have? Here I finally got through the 2-year #Starlink waitlist and got it set up. Downlink speed is 100-200Mbps most of the time, but down to 30Mbps in the evenings during peak usage. Uplink speed is usually about 10Mbps. Ping times are surprisingly good, and bufferbloat is better than my WISP actually. Ping times about 60ms typically.

Maybe the #fediverse can help: Does anybody know an always up-to-date list of #prices for #Starlink by country? That would a good basis for a world map, showing how wildly they vary (Paris, France – monthly rate 50€, New York, USA – 120 $).
And it could even shed a light on sudden #price drops, like the one in #Germany and other countries today.
Currently it's really cumbersome getting the rates on the official page by manually entering different cities.
Aber warum? Irgendwelche Ideen?

Erst im August waren die monatlichen Kosten für Starlink in Deutschland um 20 Prozent gesenkt worden. Jetzt wird der Dienst erneut merklich günstiger.
Installing #StarLink today, and feeling both super happy and mixed about it. Living where we live, at the very ass-end of DSL, we had to have #HughesNet as a backup source, and both suck. StarLink promises much better performance, and will become the main source, with DSL becoming the backup.
Now, what #SpaceX did was create a smaller version of the #Starlink "Gen 2" satellites that in some places were being called "v2 mini" satellites.
These smaller versions CAN launch on the Falcon 9 - and that's what SpaceX has been launching recently.
But... what I understand from articles is that they really want to launch the full Gen2 sats... and for that they need #Starship
So... today could be a big day for future #InternetAccess, if it all works!

My own interest in the #Starship launch is partly just a lifelong fascination with #space and rockets 🚀 ... but it's also because #SpaceX is planning to use Starship to launch their #Starlink "Gen2" satellites up into orbit.
These are larger satellites with more capacity and more capabilities. They'll be able to provide even more #InternetAccess once in orbit.
However, they are too large to fly on the Falcon 9 rocket.
They have to fly on Starship. So... SpaceX needs this all to work.

@rollinson I think that’s one of the open questions. Right now a lot of #Starlink marketing, for example, is focused on direct-to-consumer and having individuals purchase the equipment and plans.
Will “backhaul” from a local network to the rest of the Internet require different hardware and subscription plans? Will that be affordable enough to have a sustainable local business?
What will the other LEO operators offer?
All good questions.
I’m quoted today in an EdTech article “Satellite Broadband Brings Internet Connectivity to Remote Locations” that explores how low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems could potentially help connect the unconnected and close the digital divide. A key question I raised was … will these systems actually be *affordable* to the people that need them most. I think there is great potential, but also great challenges.

I've had more work impacting power and internet outages here in #Australia in a month than the last 5 years in Texas. Feels a bit like we need to focus a bit more on quality of services here.
I'm having to engineer my own protections into the new house. Not a terrible idea but, wish I didn't have to.
Going with battery backup #solar plus generator and #starlink.
Not cheap options. Especially when I am paying a lot more for these terrible services that I need to augment.
