@irizoris My sister in law and brother spent some time in an AirBnB in SI near the ferry and I thought how smart that was. They had ready and cheap access to lower Manhattan. Have been on many #iNaturalist and #NYCH2O outings to #StatenIsland and have loved it.

This gigantic cruise ship (which marinetraffic.com tells me is called the Liberty of the Seas) just came most of the way up the Verrazzano Narrows, stopped before it got to Kill van Kull/inner #NewYorkHarbor, is now *turning around*, and heading back out toward the ocean again. Like a car that realized it was pulling into the wrong driveway.
There's gotta be a story there. I'm so curious!

On this day in 2012, I visited New York City's Staten Island Railway. This is an isolated line of the New York Subway system, running from St George ferry terminal in the north of the island, to Tottenville in the south of the island.
Service is provided by older, R44 Subway Trains from the 1970s. The trains are maintained at Clifton and for heavy maintenance, individual cars are trucked to the workshops at Coney Island.
The line is completely above ground and runs more like a suburban railway, with 30 minute off peak frequency and a mixture of short terminating and express trains during peak times.
