Step rankings (based on entire experience - not just the book):
1. The Stand
2. Doctor Sleep
3. The Shining
4. Night Shift
5. ‘Salem’s Lot
6. Carrie
7. The Dead Zone
And that wraps it up for this milestone step of my journey!
I leave The Dead Zone with a few thoughts and stats:
Number of items consumed: 108
Hours spent: 94
Days passed: 107
Movies watched: 1
TV Episodes watched: 80
Current ETA for completing the journey: July 2027
In summary, I found:
🟢 The book to be very good.
🟡 The movie to be slightly overrated.
🔴 The TV series to be a complete waste of time.
I'm so glad that I wasn't the only one to see that at the beginning of the TV Series, Johnny used a walking stick that he never seemed to need. He was completely able run from here to there just find whenever the plot called for it!
Now listening to Chat Sematary talk about The Dead Zone TV Series.
I'm impressed that the host, Deanna Chapman, also watched all 80 episodes. But she did it in a 2-week span! I, only the other hand, took exactly 80 days to accomplish this feat.
I might've broken down mentally if I had to binge-watch this show like that.
Learned that just like the movie, The Dead Zone TV Series was completely filmed in Canada. I would never have known from watching the show. Really makes one think how easily interchangeable much of the US is with Canada.
They are halfway through the episode and haven't even begun to discuss The Dead Zone TV Series. You kind of get the hint that the Kingcast hosts hadn't watched it ahead of time.
And I don't blame them!
Listening to Anthony Michael Hall recount his time as Rusty in National Lampoon's vacation is riveting. He had to back for reshoots 8 months after principle photography wrapped up - but 8 months can transform a young man.
Chevy Chase busted his balls by saying to him, "Nice pimples. How's puberty?" 😂 😂 😂

The Kingcast scored an interview with Anthony Michael Hall, star of "The Dead Zone" TV series!
Final thoughts about "The Dead Zone" TV series:
It started off pretty good. The 2nd season was solid. But they lost the humor that peppered those early seasons. I'll hold this bedroom scene from Season 1 as a highlight!
But overall, I felt like this series was a great waste of time. If it weren't for this journey, I probably would've abandoned it in Season 4. Watching all of the Children of the Corn movies had greater entertainment value.
Throwing a woman's kid to the ground isn't exactly gonna win her over romantically.
Johnny suddenly gets to meet his dead father, who wasn't so dead after all.
That's the big shocker here at the end of the series. Probably the biggest shock is that they got Tom Skerritt to play this bit part!

S06E13 Denouement
Bringing up Johnny's father in the second-to-last episode ever was quite a bold plot point.
It took 79 episodes, but Sarah has finally had it with Johnny's nonsense and dumped his ass.

Speaking of #StephenKing, you know that thing he does where he divides his chapters up, what are those bits called? Or what does he call them?
I alternate between verses or parts.
#Bookstodon @bookstodon
Holy shit, so I’m reading Jerusalem’s Lot just now in Night Shift, an anthology Stephen King published in 1978. This is the short story that preceded the novel. In it, King has a character describing the town nearby. He says it’s 3 miles north of Falmouth, ME, situated on the Royal River.
That’s Yarmouth! My town! Salem’s Lot is Yarmouth, ME!
Every novel by Stephen King has one Maine character. The goal is never to be it.
--
Now here's a headline that clearly shows the author has no knowledge of King's world.
"Night Shift" is *not* now a movie. 🙄

In an otherwise dull episode with a plot I couldn't care less about, there was a touching moment at the end when the psychic girl from last season discovers her birth mother for the first time.
Day 518
=======
Getting close to the end with Episode 11 of Season 6 of USA Network's "The Dead Zone".
S06E11 Exile
So in this episode, Bruce's girlfriend gets kidnapped with a ransom demand that the girlfriend's father, who's a jockey, throw an upcoming horse race.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Sarah, the love of Johnny's life, is making googly eyes at Greg Stillson now? Didn't Stillson kill his own dad last season?
Steven King must be turning in his grave (or wherever he currently lives).
There's good ole "whats-his-name".
Oh yes, that's Bruce. Where's he been all season?

"The Boogeyman," an adaptation of Stephen King's 1973 short story of the same name, hits theaters tomorrow. The Hollywood Reporter says it's so well done that even though it's a minor King, it's major scary. But which is the best Stephen King movie adaptation of all time?

How you can tell I've been reading The Dark Tower books:
The other day, my wife and I were talking about something you don't see much of these days. I can't remember what it was now, but the point is that I ended up saying "Well the world's moved on since then".
Also, the other week when she passed me something, for some reason I said "Thankee Sai". #StephenKing
In the dumbest plot line to date, a guy frames a priest for the murder of his wife. And then he confesses it all to Johnny with the bare minimum of questioning!
Well, alright! Now we're talking!
We were due for a good exorcism story in this series!
Day 516
=======
Next is Episode 9, Season 6 of USA Network's "The Dead Zone".
S06E09 Transgression
Johnny's primary enemy in this episode is a Rube Goldberg series of unlikely events.
No wonder Johnny keeps forgetting about the Stillson Apocalypse. Everywhere he turns, there's another disaster about to happen that only he can prevent!

Now watching Episode 8, Season 6 of USA Network's "The Dead Zone"!

Even though I'm halfway through The dark Tower 4, I've decided to have a read of the first one again to see if it makes any more sense now.

I've seen the paintbrush theme used here 🇺🇲 in a children's hospital & those same fingerpaint handprints in oncology. The drag marks are #StephenKing-esque, clearly not an in-house design.
Met a guy in the '90s who'd founded an oncology software company he named, cards printed, with the acronym METS, not working in healthcare, not recognizing the very common slang for "metastasis."
It's good to run things up the flagpole.
Tak, novej #stephenking je konečně venku, takže hned zítra náběh do knihkupectví 👌

They got themselves a Dollar Store version of Matthew McConaughey to star in this film.
Some of these shots are beautiful, though.
That corn face just might be the scariest thing that has appeared in ANY of the corn movies!
Why show all the gory detail if you can just write about it in a news post?
First off, I've been watching the square dimensions of early 2000's The Dead Zone TV series for so long that it was a bit jarring to see the wide angle dimensions of a modern-made movie!
So, I'm just gonna soak up all this glorious corn in this wide-angle shot!
I'm taking a break from my one-episode-a-day Dead Zone TV series run to circle back to a book I finished last year, Night Shift, and watch the new Children of the Corn movie that just come out.
I've heard nothing but great things about this movie. Some dared whisper that it deserves Oscar recognition!
Just kidding - I heard it was a piece of shit. But I've watched the other 11 movies, so how bad can this be in comparison?
Did I mention how much I enjoy rereading #StephenKing's NIGHT SHIFT? The stories are so pure. No concept is wasted. Very much a Twilight Zone vibe. It's a stunning collection.
I'm also getting more out of it this time around. I read it in high school last time...maybe middle school...and I have a better frame of reference as an adult who's seen some shit.

Time to take a quick look at another Stephen King novel. Spoiler-lite Tiny Talk. #StephenKing #FromABuick8 #paranormal https://youtu.be/ALA3ZcUI8fI
From reading a lot of #StephenKing back to back I’ve started noticing that he has a ton of little tropes that seem to appear in every book. E.G. there’s at least one bloke that will be wearing a “Chambray work shirt” - even someone in Roland’s world has one on. I’ve never heard of them before. Same with ssport coats.
Another one is trucks snoring past. I loved that description when I first read it in It, but it’s a bit overused now.
#Bookstodon @bookstodon
I used to enjoy Stephen King. Now he's just a twitter shill that hangs out with the rest of the hate group table. He provides content and enriches musk. I'm done with people like him.
@Jennifer_Pinkley
#StephenKing couldn't do it better.
I feel like I've heard of Gilead where Roland in #TheDarkTower books is from before. But I think I must be getting mixed up with either the Iliad or Gil-galad.

Finished under The Dome. just what the fuck did I just read?
#StephenKing #Bookstodon
I've just finished ‘The Shining’, only the second Stephen King I've ever read. It's a great book that I wish was a *touch* more oblique about the supernatural occurrences. As the film is, I suppose. The underlying theme – they fuck you up, your mum and dad – is a powerful one. Jack Torrance thinks he is a new man, a better man than his abusive father, but the poison lurks in his blood.
Apropos of nothing, I've been in a #stephenking phase recently, and I think you could make the argument that's he's had the biggest if not near the biggest influence on popular culture for a good part of the last 50 years. He wrote the story behind one of the "best" #movies of all time. There are like 7 projects of his actively in the works. He's influenced countless modern creators.
If this time round of reading #StephenKing has taught me anything, he's not just a horror righter.
Even in It, which has some of the most disturbing things I've ever read, there's so much more going on.
For MAGA folks it's scary to see so many of your homies go to jail, so Dan Bongino is already working on his insanity plea by saying that his having a podcast makes him more important than Stephen King.
#stephenking
#danbongino
Finished the second Dark Tower book. To me it was a mixed bag. Better than the first one, but the seemingly endless beach sections were quite tedious I thought. And the third is apparently about them all strolling across an endless desert, which is what the first one was. At least he’s not doing it alone this time I guess.
Also re the audiobook version, there’s something about Frank Muller’s narration that isn’t doing it for me. I can’t put my finger on what it is.
#StephenKing #bookstodon @bookstodon
Detta is really pissing me off now. I wish they'd just dump her somewhere or do what she clearly wants. Why does Roland need her.

@KaraLG84 @bookstodon
Yes, the first is tough.... Imagine reading it and finding out at the very end that it's supposed to be the start of a series, not yet written....
I adore #StephenKing but I could have gladly kicked him that day....
I've decided to give the dark tower books another go. I read most of the first one and didn't like it. But I've seen folk say to start with the second and read the first one last. so I'm doing that, and yes, I get what all the fuss is about now.

Instead of outrage over some celebrity losing their blue check or having it "paid for" by Elmo, I wish there was more outrage that these "leading lights" are still feeding the beast at all by remaining on the platform.
Going back to creating dystopian fiction that seems almost insane when I write it but becomes the norm IRL five minutes later.
#Twitter Verified accounts are going crazy right now. Disappeared blue checks I noticed. #HenryWinkler #BenStiller #LaurenceTribe.. and #StephenKing reports that his account says he is a subscriber to Twitter Blue when he is not.
WHY AREN"T THEY HERE ON #Mastodon??!!
I wonder if Elon will decide to not take away the blue checkmark from some accounts to create a false impression of who's paying for the blue.
Hmmm
My random thoughts about 11/22/63 by Stephen King, since My wife and I are nearly halfway through. I don't want any spoilers, please, and I stuck this behind a content warning to hopefully not spoil it for anyone else who might be reading.
We're up to the part where Jake's living in Jodie, and the old school head is talking to him about a play. We both love the book, but personally I think this bit is going quite slow. Well I suppose it's inevitable considering Jake's got to hang around until November 63.
I don't think there's any way Jake's thing with Sadie is going to last. He can't obviously tell her about what he's really there for. Even just the time travel bit would be enough to have him carted off to the room with the soft walls. Mind you, what if Jake said that he could prove it, and went back with her to live in 2011? What weird time paradoxes or whatever would happen then? I'm kind of hoping he does that after he tries to do the deed.
I think there's more going on than his attempt to stop Oswald. I don't know what yet, but I think the key to figuring it out is what the yellow card man's game was and what the hell 'jimla' is. Everything resets, except him. Maybe he came through another rabbit hole and got stuck in his future?
I think this is the first time travel story I've come across where there's an easy (for now at least) way back. Actually no I forgot about the St Mary’s book.
I love that you kind of get a sequel to It, with Jake spending time in Derry and meeting Bev and Richie, with the outsider's view of what the town's like. Although I think that part would've been a bit confusing if I hadn't read that book first. Saying that, I think there's enough hinted at that would've made me want to find out what happened. Clever, Stephen.
There's probably more, but I'm feeling tired now, so time for me to go back to bed.

Yay for that guy -- me -- who always confuses The Fog's 2005 remake for 2007's The Mist.
Incidentally, the latter is on Netflix and I actually enjoyed it. It's King meets Lovecraft with some incredible creature design and an unhinged church lady.
@bookstodon Also, I think it’s interesting that King had one of his characters in The Langoliers saying that you can’t jump into a tine machine and save Kennedy, then 20 odd years later he writes a book about someone trying to do that.

My wife and I started reading Stephen King’s 11/22/63 last night. It seems pretty good so far. The audiobook narrator seems ok, although he has some weird ideas about voices. E.G. making an adult doing a high school English class sound like half their tongue was missing. I’m going to have to read the ebook as well just to find out what the hell he was talking about.
I’ve heard that Derry either just gets mentioned or some of the book’s set there, around the same time as It. So it’ll be interesting to see if the losers club have a cameo or something like that.

Well I've just finished Stephen King's It.
What I've already said still stands, on the whole I enjoyed it far more than I imagined. I thought I would get to chapter 2 and go nope not doing any more of that. but it's good.
I love how the book pretty much makes you feel like you're with the losers club. how tense it is and all that.
Things I didn't like include Richie's extremely racist voices. Actually Richie on the whole was a bit of an annoying douchebag. I know people probably behaved like that all the time in the 50s but still I don't have to like it.
Also there's bits that I wish I had never read, like chapter 2 and the parts exploring Henry and Patrick in unnecessary amount of detail.
but yeah, I'm glad I finally listened to the folk telling me to read it these last 20 years or so.

Hello and good day, I am #NewHere on this instance. I haven't moved away from my "home server" berlin.social (over there I'm @FrauBluecher), but I'm planning to set up an allotment here for banter about music and literature that requires more than 500 characters per post. In exchange, my Wordpress blog, which is lying dormant for lack of interaction, will be put to sleep.
I definitely don't want to continue the constant outrage mode of Twitter here, so since moving to Mastodon, I've been deliberately tooting non-politically - and much more relaxed. Good music, horror and scifi literature and mobile phone photography have been my main topics so far, and my nerves thank me for it. Also for this reason, "empty thinkers" aka covidiots, right-winger & co. are blocked without further discussion as soon as they make themselves known; I have no need to waste life time with pointless discussions.

We read The Shining in #GothicLit and it intrigued me. For a lot of reasons but I’m thinking of story frames and structures tonight. I liked the explicit 5 act dramatic/theatrical structure of it, rather than story-in-3-parts arc. It cast the suggestion of alchemical theater over the work that was then reinforced within by the setting, characters, and plot. 1/
