Today's run was a 19 min threshold session at 9:55/mi. Today I tested the pockets of my Brooks running shorts, filling them up with little snack sized M&Ms packets. This was a terrible idea, as snack size M&M packets made for Halloween distribution are flimsy, and my sweat was causing the packages to disintegrate. If I had run a full half, my shorts would be stained with the color of candy-coated chocolate.
Today's run was a 45 min base + extra to hit 4 mi. Avg pace of 11:51 which is a good sign for the half. It was my first run using my new chest HRM too. My initial review is that these things look a lot better on skinny guys. But I was surprised at the additional data. Respiration rate! Ground contact time *balance*! (I favor my left foot slightly, apparently.) Neat stuff!

Today's run was tempo, 4x9:00@10:25/mi. Went well though it definitely seemed like Garmin was having trouble keeping track of me with all the cloud cover. At the end of the workout I kept going until I hit 10k, for a Strava badge, but also ended up getting a 10k PR. Which may have been due to GPS issues. I guess we'll never know...
Guten Morgen Euch allen

Plus, first standalone test of my new Apple Watch 9. Besides my missing downloaded music, I am quite satisfied.

Simple filtering and correction of GPS data continues to elude the authors of an app whose literal single purpose is the accurate recording of the slow movement of a human ambling through space and time

#parkrun 26. Pushed myself today but not too hard as I have a 5k race tomorrow. Definitely pleased with the results; 10:00/mi average with the last .10 of a mile being a quality sprint to the finish. I slowed down on the uphills and sped up on the downhills. Cadence average was 168. And one :20 second walk. Overall, good parkrun.
Racing Tomorrow – Bure Valley 10 Mile
Final Grand Prix Race of 2023. Will I end on a high?
Even though it has only been 5 weeks since the Dereham 5k, it seems like months. I guess this is because all of the other 2023 Sportlink Grand Prix races were much closer together (with 3 days being the shortest gap).
So here we are. Tomorrow it’s the turn of the Bure Valley Harriers to host their Bure Valley 10 Mile Race, the 14th, and (sadly) final, Sportlink Grand Prix race of the 2023 season. (It looks like there are still a few places available if you fancy it… you can enter at Total Race Timing.)
Starting and finishing in the North Norfolk village of Banningham, my presumption is that it will be a gently undulating route around the surrounding country roads. If the weather is favourable, I suspect fast times will be the order of the day.
And speaking of the weather, the current forecast is a sunny 16° C, with a moderate breeze. So fingers crossed conditions will be near perfect.
Below is a table of predictions from various algorithms / sources. Note that the Athlete Data Analysis Platform and Running Watch do not provide 10 mile race predictions, and so I have had to derive values from their 10 km and half marathon distance predictions.
AlgorithmPace (min/km)Time (mm:ss)Difference from fastest (%)Riegel (6 min Assessment)4:3774:17– 11.3 %Riegel (3.2 km Assessment)4:2871:53– 8.4 %Athlete Data Analysis Platform4:2170:00– 5.9 %Running Watch4:1468:07– 3.2 %TrainAsONE4:0766:15– 0.5 %Riegel (5 km Race)4:0666:06–Predictions for tomorrow’s 10 mile road race from a selection of sources. Ordered by increasing velocity.
Given that my last 10 mile race was completed in 66:33 (a personal record), I would have thought that a sub 70 minute time is probable.
Consequently, as has been the case for the whole season, the assessment predictions are suggesting quite a slow (and unlikely?) time for me. And, as has been common, the Athlete Data Analysis Platform and Running Watch are suggesting times somewhere between my expectation and the assessments.
Another 10 mile PB? TrainAsONE thinks so.
At 66:06, the 5 km Riegel prediction is the fastest, with TrainAsONE a close second with a time of 66:15. It is nice to see them concur. It gives faith in their values, and is especially nice as they both predict a personal record time! The game is on!
Wish me luck!

What a week! 5 days straight of activity. Capped off with a 10K #run to work. Rest day tomorrow before a hike on Saturday (weather pending).
What a boost nice weather can do for me, eh?

@jemal Lots of charts & tables. I look at them daily, so I think that is where I get most of my value. There are a bunch of other features that exist for a really specific subset (skiers, injured runners, etc, etc). I used the free version until I decided I wanted the extra charts. Youtube has the best pro-/anti- info on #Strava. I also follow local people to see what routes they are #running.
Yesterday, we had some beautiful light for our 'classic' loop with my friend Dom. The new asphalt in Parc René-Lévesque was fantastic! We're still enjoying the delightful temperature while we can…
I used to love #Strava back when their pricing was reasonable. I pretty much give it all my exercise data but $99/year for certain charts and graphs that I can recreate is extortionate and not worth it.
Strava's Relative Effort algorithm is similar to Dr. Eric Banister's "TRIMP - Training Impulse", released in a paper in 1975.
TRIMP is defined as:
TRIMP = T_min. * (HRavg-HRrest) / (HRmax-HRrest) * 0.64 * e^(w * (HRavg-HRrest) / (HRmax-HRrest))
Where "w" is 1.92 if male and 1.67 if female.
When you compare TRIMP to Strava's Relative Effort, not only is TRIMP continuous, as would be expected, but #Strava is calculating less stress for the same intensity based on heart rate data.
I've made some (slow) progress.
Their Relative Effort algorithm is discontinuous. They have 7 "zones" where they award effort based on your heart rate.
For me, with a max HR of 178 bpm, those jumps are:
Zone 1→2: 142 bpm
Zone 2→3: 149 bpm
Zone 3→4: 157 bpm
Zone 4→5: 166 bpm
Zone 5→6: 171 bpm
Zone 6→7: 178 bpm
Anyone know of an app that is a good alternative to Strava Premium? Decided not to renew but they have some fitness stats that I’m currently missing. #Strava

⚠️ Not Cool ⚠️
Do you know who's looking at your #Strava? Recent news reports have demonstrated a dark side of publicly posting your routes. https://www.bicycling.com/news/a44901279/whos-looking-at-your-strava/ #cycling #privacy #safety #data #location
Enjoyed a pleasant medium ride of 93 km this Sunday with my friend Dom. It was certainly a different type of ride than my previous #monPetitTourDeFrance. With an average speed of 28.4 km/h, I unlocked 50 achievements on #strava. Riding with a speedy partner like Dom is great for my training!
Dom & I - 2 / Rabbit & Racoon - 0, as we narrowly avoided collisions twice with these 2 kamikaze animals!

I’m impressed to see Strava is now nearly a full-featured social network: although most posts are uploaded from fitness trackers, it also supports non-activity posts, groups, and events. Users can upload photos, add comments, likes, and kudos. You could use Strava as a blog, if you can live without RSS and text formatting.
I tried the #strava routing feature. I asked for an easy ride. Apparently we don’t agree on the definition of “easy”.
68 km, 4:06, 16 km/h (avg speed), 1045 m. (ascent)

@jseraf Yes it’s the end of my bicycle trip.
Thanks fro your compliments!
You can see the map of the full trip there:
For more details, you can visite my #strava:
Arrived at Ambert. I still have 13km to finish my longer loop I have never done. Time to contemplate the beautiful landscapes of Auvergne with the #sunset.
@thomasbeagle Select workout or crossfit. I'm always cross when I have to do the chores.
Exploring the summit of Le Puy-en-Velay was a delightful way to conclude this ride. Descending the hill at a leisurely pace, it safely wrapped up my day :-).
Further rambling on the #Strava "carbon saved" calculation on my commute.
This morning I cycled my son to the nursery on the ebike. According to #Strava that is "2.5kg of CO2" saved. That number would probably make sense if I was comparing making that 12km trip in a car.
Now I don't own the said car. I would have done that trip in a bus. If that bus is full (it is during the school year) then the CO2 per mile is not materially different from my bike. Do I still save CO2?
I gave some feedback about the CO2 #Strava feature on the community thread where it was first requested by a user and I described car commuting as "hell on earth", with cycle commuting being "heaven on earth" as an explanation as to why a cyclist might cycle additional KMs and that therefore this calculation was therefore too simplicitic. They bleeped out "hell" in my post. 👿
So, I edited the post and used some "e" unicode lookalike ("е") to put it back. 😈
Ok, here is #Strava's own support article about this feature
Well this is interesting from #Strava. If you set your ride as a commute they now suggest how much CO2 was saved over (presumably…?) a car journey.
I have absolutely no idea how accurate this is but the concept is at least interesting as a way to make you think about things and encourage you to do it more.
#Running update: Almost didn't run this one cause I woke up with very low core health (yes that was a Red Dead Redemption 2 reference). But I did it and I'm glad I did because I got caught in a light rain, probably the last rain of the month.
Great to see 10IronWomen highlighted on #Strava! People may not know that #ironman events are quite male dominated, in fact when the group formed in 2018 only 13% of the entrants to Ironman Barcelona were women. Their goal is to get more women and reach a 50:50 gender split https://strava.app.link/7T4ziXkpZBb
And of course I cycled up to the roof of the Opera house … again.
Which now makes me the "Local Legend" for this section on #Strava 😆
This will be my first race at the #marathon distance! According to Strava, about 5000 feet of climbing, 📈, half of the climbing is up a ski run.
Probably a good distance to keep me from breaking down so I can keep with my training plan until #Moab240 😱
I decided to cancel my Strava subscription. I just don't use the “premium” 🤢 features enough to warrant the price.
What other apps do people use to track running/cycling? I don't really need the social aspects. Really just tracking miles and routes. New route discovery is cool but not required. Milestones/segments/PRs are cool but, again, not required.
Apparently a handful of people took, on a 50-pound #eMTB, a walking trail full of rocks, steps, roots and ruts, with a 20% incline (and ends at 38%) 😳
Me, I was walking the bike most of it, but pedaled my way up where I could!
