We also (in addition to illegal parking) need urgent action to reclaim our #footpaths from the small number of businesses abusing #public space and ignoring the "retail spillout" boundaries on #MacCurtainStreet. The designed footpath width is intended to be 3 metres, with bar furniture inside the (marked) retail areas.
The few bars blocking the two ends of the street create a hostile walking & wheeling environment. The #street is only as wide as it's narrowest point.

#Kids cannot be outside without their parents constantly watching them, they cannot play on the #street (because we made them too dangerous) or even sidewalks in some #cities, and even loitering (existing in public) is illegal in many places. We've made kid-friendly #transportation such as bicycles, skateboards, and rollerblades illegal in many places. It's no wonder why kids are rarely found #outside anymore.

When I went out with parcels today I thought about the new surface that we have on our street. It's much lighter in colour than the usual asphalt. I wondered if this also means that it reflects more light so is cooler.
Later on I took my IR thermometer out to measure the temperature and sure enough the new light surface was between 35 and 37 C while the black asphalt nearby equally in the sun measured between 39 and 41 C.
This could make city streets and residential areas appreciably more pleasant during the summer. Also given that many square km of our planet are now covered in asphalt changing to a lighter colour could also mean that we reflect more of the sun's energy off the planet.
Having written about this today, I fully expect someone to come along and spray fresh tar over the light coloured stones tomorrow...
