The way the people can help the phase out along the way?

Lobby your city for car free and 15 minute cities.

#strongtowns has a program to connect people and organize for this purpose.

change your city, change the world.

Why changing your town is climate action. Bad city policy is financial and climate ruin for this simple reason, it’s wasted carbon release. The resources that go into sewers, roads, cost energy, release carbon in ways that yield no economic benefit to a town. Multiply that across cities all over the US and Canada, it adds up.

car cities waste time, lives, money and energy and bring financial ruin. such a deal.

repurposing existing buildings saves on co2 emitted from construction. As #strongtowns discusses, cities used to be more organic and changing to adapt to rising needs. They have worked to restore that adaptive nature, which as a species we will need in a changing climate regime. It’s time to untangle the massive economic titanic dragging the world in a single direction.

Spend any time at an intersection, and you will quickly see that people, more often than not, do not stop at stop signs, unless they are yielding to another person

We must ask ourselves, why are our cities still being built with stop signs as the main form of traffic calming? They do not prevent speeding, and nobody stops at them anyway, because they understand that once they have determined the intersection to be clear, they can proceed carefully

An intersection at Easton in Columbus, Ohio. Speeds are slow at the intersection, but cars do not fully stop at the stop sign. I do not fault them.

Hearing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLMvbZYBqgY

As described, the Accessory Dwelling Unit program is a high-touch, low-volume pilot:

- Subsidy of up to 30% of construction cost
- "Affordability covenant" limited to 120% AMI for 15 years
- Only on owner-occupied land
- 20 to 25 units total
- Only in Hilltop, South Side, and Linden
- Applications open in spring 2024

I don't think this is going to meaningfully fix anything, unless they open it up later.

Circa 1920, my hometown had two passenger train lines (one of which terminated there) and multiple interurban routes which connected all of the region's larger cities. Everywhere was in walking distance. All in a town of only 5,000 people. Today, the population is almost double, but all of it is gone. There isn't even a bus to provide intercity #transit. Most people probably don't even know what was once there anymore.

"A 10-foot lane, at the widest, should be the “default setting” for any sort of urban street: a place lined with homes and businesses, where traffic should flow slower than 35 mph. This should be understood as the risk-averse approach. If the engineer wants to make the lanes wider, they should have to justify the choice."

🛑 STOP PETRO PETE 🛑

As Secretary of Transportation,
Pete Buttegieg could be doing the most to drop US emissions. Reducing car dependency. Building critical supply chains for food, medicine, and essential goods. Re-localizing and regionalizing the country, and setting an example for other core economic countries to follow. Policy for accessory business units and dwelling units, to transform the existing space and infrastructure we have into walkable communities where we can get everything we need and work with local purpose and agency.

Instead, Pete is signing oil terminals and creating sacrifice zones across the country. Stop PETRO PETE.

And stop the Seaport Oil Terminal and Gulflink projects — the equivalent of building 80 new coal plants right now, f*cking us all, and creating vast sacrifice zones of petrochemical pollution in the land, air, water across Texas and the Gulf Coast.

Just learned that in Arlington, Virginia, bus fare (on the ART busses) is FREE in peak directions during commute hours.

"starting Monday, Oct. 2, 2023, and going through Dec. 25, 2023"

Public transit should be FREE. We let drivers drive on roads for free, paid for by taxes. Why shouldn't public transit be funded similarly? This is an excellent initiative and test in Arlington!

In response to news about UAW (United Auto Workers) securing battery production under the UAW master contract:

Now let's get those batteries into bikes, minerals under the sovereignty of Indigenous peoples, and production into the hands of @UAW unions workers. ✅✅✅

A graphic showing a headline from The New Republic: "Decolonize the Lithium Boom", with an image of a lithium mine. Below that, a seperate graphic titled, "What can batteries power?" This graphic shows that 1 Hummer EV battery is equal to 3 Chevy Bolt batteries, which is equal to 380 e-bike batteries. The graphic visualizes this comparison, and adds details showing the differences in MSRP, community dangers, pollution, and benefits of these different uses of batteries. The 380 e-bikes offer 7x the MSRP and economic value of the 1 EV Hummer or 3 Chevy Bolts, while offering significant benefits to community and workers, and minimal pollution and dangers (unlike the Hummer EV, which is significantly dangerous for the community and creates sever tire pollution, and the 3 Chevy Bolts which also create severe tire pollution)

I don't know why "you can zone out on your phone all you want" isn't a bigger selling point for #publictransit.

(Discussed on #StrongTowns podcast)

Watching this vid on property #taxes by #StrongTowns makes me wonder: what does America do right, society-wise? What does America do better than other developed nations?

We don't have #UniversalHealthcare, and #healthcare expenses are outrageous.

Our progressive tax system has been defanged by moneyed interests.

Our time off policies are pathetic, with paid childcare leave being rare to non-existent.

Our minimum wage is ridiculously low.

We've turned local law enforcement into military nuts, with LEO rarely facing true repercussions for committing crimes thanks to their ~~unions~~ gangs.

Voting is not compulsory, nor is easy everywhere, with plenty of hurdles depending on location/ethnicity.

The list goes on & on.

What does America do right 🤔

💨 When you sell a car (even for an EV), your gas car gets re-sold and keeps on polluting and emitting.

🛞 Tires are the worst form of car pollution. They shed microplastics and toxins every day — which kill everything.

The only way to end the problems of cars, is to end cars.

@futurebird https://www.sambutler.us/costs-of-car-economy-bike-transit

According to a 2019 study by Harvard [1], the public cost of the car economy is $5,645 per person per year. (The private cost is $6,000/year per car.)

Together, the cost of maintaining the U.S. car economy is $3.5 trillion per year.
In the communities with significant bike infrastructure, the public cost is $150 per person per year. (The private cost is $500/year per bike.)

In the communities significant public transit, the operating costs are $1,230 per person per year. (The private cost of transit is $720/year per rider).

Together, the cost of a bike and transit economy in the U.S. is $0.862 trillion per year.
