There's a certain hilarious irony in the fact that Universal (unsuccessfully) sued Nintendo for copyright infringement over Donkey Kong back in 1981 (Universal owns the King Kong IP), then 42 years later made a movie featuring the Donkey Kong character that made them shitloads of money and became the (so far) top-grossing film of 2023.

Loved neurotic Bowser. Cranky being Old Jew Kong instead of Cranky Grandpa Kong was not what I was expecting. Peach’s giant eyes were not okay.

likely be a traditional Super Mario Bros Movie sequel starring Yoshi, but the Mario & Luigi RPG games definitely deserve the cinematic treatment too. #SuperMarioBrosMovie
, Keegan Michael-Ray and Seth Rogen are similarly great as Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong, but it's Jack Black as Bowser who's the real star here. Jack Black is simply the perfect voice for Bowser, capturing effortlessly his ferociously intimidating persona. His gravelly intonations are exactly how I would imagine Bowser to sound in the videogames, and it makes me wish for a Bowser's Inside Story movie. The post-credits scene makes it clear that the next movie will #SuperMarioBrosMovie
modern standards, and I think they made the right choice by making Peach more of a strong and capable leader. It gives her more agency within the plot, and also allows her to act as more of a mentor figure for Mario, once he arrives in the Mushroom Kingdom.

The narrative itself is rather slight, but then if you're watching a Super Mario Bros. Movie, I'm not sure you're particularly watching for the plot. It mainly centres around Bowser's desire to marry Princess Peach and take over the Mushroom Kingdom, which to be fair, is an improvement on the storyline from the games.
Princess Peach's kidnapping is, after all, something that would never work in a modern movie. It's rather archaic by #SuperMarioBrosMovie
with so many nods to the series. One particular nod that made me laugh out loud were the Toads' lies that the princess "was in another castle", which brought back memories of playing the NES game as one of the free ambassador games on the 3DS. I also noticed the Super Mario Bros. 3 cape, and a nod to Mario Kart Double Dash, when Mario & Toad are passengers in the Kong kart. You can tell the animators are fans of the games when they even include King Bobomb from Super Mario #SuperMarioBrosMovie
The Super Mario Bros Movie: Super Mario Bros. is an interesting property when it comes to cinematic adaptations. On one hand, you have the live-action version, which deviates significantly from the games. On the other, you have the most recent iteration, The Super Mario Bros Movie, which is so faithful to Nintendo's franchise that it's like watching cutscenes from Super Mario Sunshine. Illumination's version is like a love letter to the videogames we all grew up playing, #SuperMarioBrosMovie

I'm sorry, why are companies only offering The Super Mario Bros Movie to buy now? Why can't we rent it anymore? It was only ever able to rent at £15.99, which nobody in their right mind would pay! Normally the price goes down to a lower amount to rent before it goes to 'Buy Only'.

Mario Bros Movie, flawed story with some good twists, but not a great way to do it with the whole "Superstar" thing. Voice acting choice was a bit strange but worked okay I think. The animation was pretty good. The environment and character design was really good (Not the best i've seen).
But the fan service. My god that made me cry. The Mario Kart part especially was like, oh my god they know. Genius in those parts but a hard pass for story, and Peach. I only played MK

It is a cute movie that holds many surprises. Not in the overall plot, but in the way plot elements are tied together.

Went to see a movie for the first time since before the pandemic. It was my sons' first time ever at a movie theater. It was nice to be at a theater again. I forgot how LOUD it gets.

The Super Mario Bros Movie was very by the book as far as plot beats go. Peach was presented very well, not as “Girl-Bossy” as the press was making her out to be. I was glad to see the Super Mario Bros. was taken very literally when Mario AND Luigi saved the day. That was a nice touch. Again, a very safe movie but very enjoyable. Watched #SuperMarioBrosMovie. It was a lot of fun, full of easter eggs, and not as adult-centric as a lot of post-Shrek movies have been, which is neither good nor bad. I think I would have found it pretty meh if I hadn't had my kid with me, but given that he was, it was a great time.
The timing was good and the characters were all loveable. Jack Black was a stand-out as always.
The soundtrack was banging through regardless.

We went to see the #SuperMarioBrosMovie and obviously given the constraints it had no chance of being a cinematic masterpiece, but given those constraints, seriously, it has no business being as good as it is.
There's an actual story that mostly works, voice acting and animation is flawless, there is character development, the references are fun but mostly not actually on the nose and the score is absolutely brilliant.
Watch it with a person too young to have seen even a Wee in real life, but who has caught up through hours and hours of YouTube, and you'll be constantly be jabbed in the side by someone going "that's the suit and the flowers Bowser had at the end of Odyssey!", "that's a Mario 64 reference!", etc. =)

Max liked LEGO since he was tiny. When I wanted to introduce him to Star Wars, we did LEGO Star Wars. He’s 100% in on Star Wars now. I did most of the build but the play aspect of Bowser’s Airship has flipped him from a no to a yes on #SuperMarioBrosMovie and I’m a happy dad.
