"Police officers are switching off their body-worn cameras when force is used, as well as deleting footage and sharing videos on WhatsApp...

The most serious allegations include:

-Cases in seven forces where officers shared camera footage with colleagues or friends - either in person, via WhatsApp or on social media
-Images of a naked person being shared between officers on email and cameras used to covertly record conversations
-Footage being lost, deleted or not marked as evidence, including video, filmed by Bedfordshire Police, of a vulnerable woman alleging she had been raped by an inspector - the force later blamed an "administrative error"
-Switching off cameras during incidents, for which some officers faced no sanctions - one force said an officer may have been "confused"

#Surveillance #Privacy #Google #LinkTracking: "We released a new version of Privacy Badger that updates how we fight “link tracking” across a number of Google products. With this update Privacy Badger removes tracking from links in Google Docs, Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Images results. Privacy Badger now also removes tracking from links added after scrolling through Google Search results.

Link tracking is a creepy surveillance tactic that allows a company to follow you whenever you click on a link to leave its website. As we wrote in our original announcement of Google link tracking protection, Google uses different techniques in different browsers. The techniques also vary across Google products. One common link tracking approach surreptitiously redirects the outgoing request through the tracker’s own servers. There is virtually no benefit for you when this happens. The added complexity mostly just helps Google learn more about your browsing."

Just thinking out loud for a moment about surveillance... Maybe this should be a blog post and given much more thought, but let's start the conversation here.

If Chatcontrol 2.0 passes in the EU, which seems increasingly likely, what are we going to do to protect ourselves, friends, and family?

I mean, yes, there will probably always be systems that won't do client-side scanning but things like Signal and XMPP clients like Conversations with OMEMO or new things like Simplex or VeilidChat will probably be forced to withdraw from EU versions of Apple App Store/Google Play.

So, OK, even people with a half-liberated Android phone with F-Droid will probably still be able to install Signal forks like Molly or Conversations from there, but what about my mom our my youngest, who both use a locked down iPhone? What can they use?

What are we going to do? Get everyone an F-Droid-enabled half-liberated Android or a liberated ex-Android phone? Give them a Linux laptop with an XMPP client? Is this really feasable? What other alternatives are there?

Maybe one way forward is to insist on using a web chat to communicate? Yes, sure, the new EU directive might force client-side scanning on the browsers, too, but I think it will, at least at first, be totally focused on commercial message providers and their clients.

Surveillance Under the #PatriotAct
"Hastily passed 45 days after 9/11 in the name of national security, the Patriot Act was the first of many changes to surveillance laws that made it easier for the government to spy on ordinary Americans by expanding the authority to monitor phone and email communications, collect bank and credit reporting records, and track the activity of innocent Americans on the Internet. While most Americans think it was created to catch terrorists, the Patriot Act actually turns regular citizens into suspects."

Lithuania’s police ran the compromised, ‘encrypted’ #Anom mobile phone service secretly for the FBI, who couldn’t directly because of the 4th Amendment. Will this data retention and interference with confidentiality of communications reach the CJEU or ECHR to consider its necessity and proportionality? @josephcox reports: https://www.404media.co/revealed-the-country-that-secretly-wiretapped-the-world-for-the-fbi/ #surveillance

"We occasionally end up with products that can be dangerous to you, or to society in general, which we believe to be the case with Amazon-owned Ring and its relationship with law enforcement."

"We would like to remind you that there are many, many alternatives. Ring cameras are cheap and ubiquitous, but contributing to a just society is also a factor in keeping your family safe."

Why Wired doesn't recommend Ring Cameras.
