NSW's detailed daily case data has been updated, up to June 7.

Among the Greater metropolitan Sydney LGAs, Hunters Hill LGA stands out with an extremely high case rate of 4,620/M combined with Reff (case momentum) at 1.1.

Note this report is updated regularly by robots, and provides daily case data down to LGA level, covering NSW, VIC and QLD. It also offers daily case data by age band, at state level.

I don't have time to do all this data justice, and would welcome and encourage any local reporters who want to inform people in their LGA or region. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you get started or make it easier. Once you are underway I expect it would take you 5 minutes once a week to inform your local community about transmission levels, trends and hotspots.

The #HigherEducationPostcard virtual world tour continues. Here's a #postcard of the University of #Sydney

This was founded in 1850, growing out of Sydney College. In 1848, the year of European revolutions, a plan was proposed to create a secular university for Sydney. This was to be part of the case for self-government for the colony, which was achieved in 1856

Old postcard showing the University of Sydney. The monochrome image shows a line drawing of the university's buildings, faux medieval halls seeking to look like an Oxbridge college. The drawing is contained in a sketch of a dark wooden picture frame, to make the postcard look like a framed picture. On the lower frame is a drawn plaque reading "University - Sydney N.S.W"

Here's the latest variant picture for New South Wales.

XBB.1.16.* "Arcturus" (29%) continues to battle XBB.1.9.* "Hyperion" (28%) for dominance.

XBB.1.5.* "Kraken" (18%) has been declining steadily, but is still significant.

Be alert for conjunctivitis symptoms, particularly associated with the Arcturus variant.

The vigorous mix of very different variants poses a raised immediate re-infection risk for anyone relying on natural immunity from a recent infection.

The sample volumes seem somewhat representative up to May 25, although the volume appears to be declining, unfortunately.

Just a little bit more time to kill, and I happen across an intriguing cafe, which seems to have little more than a white wall, a La Maazocco, a Vittoria Ardino, and a bunch of different #SpecialtyCoffee. They had run out of batch, but I had plenty of time to wait as they brewed a fresh batch. This one is a @single_o washed Zambia coffee tasting of bergamot and sultanas.

It's been an enjoyable morning revisiting my #CoffeeHunt addiction. Should do this again sometime #CreAsionHarrisSt #Sydney

Love the warmth of clay cups with coffee. Especially when they contain delicious coffee 😊

"Both these coffees, are for you, by yourself?"... I've been gone far too long. The dbl shot of the @coffeealchemy single of the day was nice, but very close to a mainstream espresso blend. Smooth, mellow, but with no real highlights. The batch brew, one of their North Africans, on the other hand was an enjoyable light lemon honey, almost on the lemon myrtle side of the fence. An interesting and somewhat refreshing coffee. 😁👍#CoffeeHunt #Sydney #SpecialtyCoffee

I used to really enjoy dropping by Gumption and sitting in the old school arcade, sipping on delicious coffee. Seems the covid years have now made that experience more anxious, which is a shame.

With my morning meeting pushed back closer to lunch, looks like I have time for an old school #coffeehunt and the first stop is #normcore

The vibe is the same, the coffees are delicious, but it's missing a bit of the @chanhohong tornado 😁. Awesome to see that this is still a great Cafe to recommend in the #Sydney #SpecialtyCoffee scene 😁👌

Normcore Coffee is one of my go to cafes in Sydney. Close to town hall, next to the fire station
The natural Ethiopian Yiracheffe was super bright and juicy, with a complex darker plum sweetness in the finish. Not what I would expect from a Yiracheffe
I love that they still write up all their coffees on the wall. The honey processed Columbian batch brew took some time to get into. Hot, the coco powder and hazelnuts had me worried, but as it cooled, a soft ripe pineapple acidity and lychee finish was a nice surprise.

Back in the early 1980s my senior high school class went to see "Death of a Salesman", starring the legendary British-Australian actor Warren Mitchell, in Sydney. I wasn't able to go as my family was too poor to pay for the school excursion. It is probably the school experience that I most regret missing out on. The next day all of the other students who went (even those who were not really into literature/theatre) were raving about how good it was & Mitchell's brilliant performance as Willy Loman.

I'm sure Anthony LaPaglia will do an excellent job portraying the tragic salesman on the Australian stage. #theatre #theater #AnthonyLaPaglia #Australia #Sydney #DeathOfASalesman #ArthurMiller #WillyLoman #play #stage

One of the great pleasures of cultivating a home #garden is the daily ritual of #foraging fresh greens for lunch.

I wandered down to pick some greens and give the tadpoles their daily feed (cucumber slices). Yes, although it’s almost winter here, native frog tadpoles are still fattening up, ready to metamorphose next month. But also attracted to our pond this time of year are these gorgeous Eastern Billabongflies.

And today, like most days this past month, I spent timeless moments of pure joy watching our fleet of blue damselflies flitting about tasting flowers, veg and each other, then resting satisfied in the warmth of the low sun.

#EasternBillabongfly #Tadpoles #NativeFrogs #Damselfly #Vegetables #Flowers #Pond #Biodiversity #Nature #Sydney #Australia

Eastern billabongflies (Austroagrion watsoni) are small damselflies about 25mm (1 inch) long, also known as the Eastern Dart, a damselfly in the family Coenagrionidae. They are found near slow running water or still water, such as lakes, ponds and ditches throughout northern and eastern Australia. Male and female eastern billabongflies mate in a wheel position, and this Australian native is fortunately not an endangered species.

Eastern billabongflies have a blue bar just behind their eyes where the common bluetail has two blue spots. The tips of the tails of eastern billabongflies have two black squares, whereas the common bluetail and blue riverdamsel tails are all blue. Photo: Retired science teacher Nev Rowley, iNaturalistAU.

I've integrated the available data by age into my detailed daily case report.

For NSW, VIC & QLD, the report analyses PCR and RAT reported cases by age group, with detail by day. Each state uses their own "creative" age groups. QLD's is the most detailed (buckets of 5 years up to 100+), which is more useful for specific comparisons but harder to get an overall picture.

NSW & VIC Data is usually weekly on Fridays, with the NSW data typically lagging an extra day. QLD data is usually published on Wednesdays.

If you are disappointed by the data provided by your state or jurisdiction, please contact your local health department and elected representatives and let them know.

As with the detailed case data by location in that report, I've derived metrics like Reff, 7-day averages and per capita. I've switched from per 100K to per 1M, for consistency with my other reports.

Here are some sample outputs, showing higher case rates (per capita) in elderly Victorians, and higher case rates in older QLD school-aged children.

My 2c on yesterday's light rail fatality:

Sydney's coupled trams are way too long and a tragic accident like this was inevitable. The gap between the trams is inviting. Honestly, after a few too many beers at 17 years old i would've done the same thing.

Good design encourages safe decision making. Anyone who knows anything about #OHS knows that signage is your absolute last resort for controlling a hazard. You don't open a brand new bespoke system that relies on signs to stop people climbing across the gap between cars.

#TfNSW should have introduced slightly longer, uncoupled trams at a greater frequency in the first place. As I understand it the only reason they didn't was RMS concern about tram volumes slowing car traffic at Cleveland St and Alison road.

Accidents happen, traffic is inherently dangerous but this one could have been avoided with more thoughtful design choices.

Hello #Sydney, it’s been a while. Your airport #publictransport, and ticketing system (where I simply had to tap with my #AppleWatch) put Melbourne’s offering to shame.

Signs at train station saying no need for an Opal card, and that you can just use Apple Pay (or Google Pay) instead.

Dude walking out of the convention center near the tram stop: “I don’t get #Melbourne. I’ve been trying for years.”
Eccentric looking man alighting from tram: “Go back home to #Sydney, you wanker!”
First dude: “I bloody well will!”

Nice to see Melbourne is still Melbourne. #EverythingOpen
