It is the second half of 2023 and #Taiwan, Asia's freest liberal democracy in which 24 million free people live, is not yet a member of the UN and does not even have observer status (for example, the Vatican and the Palestinian Authority have UN observer status).
Why?
Because the Chinese regime forcefully projects its absurd fantasies to the whole world and threatens if the world says Chinese fantasies are imperialist bullshit.
We must do everything possible to deter #China's #CCP and defend #Taiwan A flurry of activity around Taiwan aims to improve the Chinese military’s ability to neutralize the island’s natural advantages against an invader & block US intervention https://www.wsj.com/world/asia/chinas-fighter-jets-arent-just-flying-around-taiwan-theyre-practicing-d6e56cc5?st=f1zo81sg5owoio5 via @WSJ https://nitter.hongkongers.net/benedictrogers/status/1705135004806681076#m

NEW TRAIL GUIDE: Shuangliu Waterfall Trail (雙流瀑布)
Shuangliu National Forest Recreation Area is one of two forest parks to be located in Pintung County (the other is Kenting National Forest Recreation Area). The area gets its name for being the confluence where the two main tributaries of Fenggang River join – Shuangliu (雙流) means two rivers, and the sound of running water is a constant backdrop to the walk. Located on historic Paiwan hunting grounds, the park is now maintained by the Forestry Bureau.

🧭 5.7km – A smidge longer if you walk all the way to the waterfall (it was closed for trails repairs when we visited).
🕒 1-2 hours.
🚶♀️0.5-1/10 difficulty level for regular Taiwan hiker. Not difficult in any sense.
⛰ Almost none.
💦 A single refillable bottle will suffice. There are water dispensers along the way.
☀️ Not too much shade.
☎️ Mobile coverage here is pretty weak the whole way.
🥰 This is a lovely, gentle walk in beautiful surroundings. My only regret is that we didn’t have longer to spend here.
🗺️ There are multiple trails in the park, come in the morning and pick which ones you want to explore.
📄 No permit required, but there is an entry fee to visit the park.
🚌This route is accessible by public transport. (Details included in the full blog.)

I have an unreasonable amount of fun using my 12 year old laptop day to day for my personal tasks. I guess #Lenovo did a good job back then (X201), it was good to max things out as much as I could, and Linux (#ArchLinux :arch:) just keeps the fun alive extremely well. Feels nice to be closer to the machine.
It's not without problems and probably an upgrade is (long) due, but I also feel I can likely keep going until @frameworkcomputer starts shipping to #Taiwan, so less pressure.

Taiwan's defense ministry urges China to stop its “destructive, unilateral action” amidst an increase in military activity in the Taiwan Strait

Taiwan detects over 100 Chinese warplanes around its island
> "Between the morning of September 17th to 18th, the Ministry of National Defence had detected a total of 103 Chinese aircraft which was a recent high and has posed severe challenges to the security across the #Taiwan Strait and in the region," it said in a statement. Beijing's "continued military harassment can easily lead to a sharp spike in tension and worsen regional security," the ministry said https://www.lemonde.fr/en/china/article/2023/09/18/taiwan-detects-over-100-chinese-warplanes-around-its-island_6137079_162.html
Taiwan urges China to stop ‘continuous military harassment’
“Made in Taiwan,” a cookbook that celebrates centuries of Taiwanese culture and foodways, opens with a quote from activist Peng Ming-min: “[Neither] race, language, nor culture form a nation, but rather a deeply felt sense of community and shared destiny.” Atlas Obscura writer Diana Hubbell tells us how the book is a love letter to the island nation known for its culture, people and cuisine.

He tells us that he has always dreamt about visiting #Taiwan, and has a Taiwanese friend in Odesa. He wanted to paint street art in order to emphasize the natural friendship between the two.
Taiwan is a place with rich traditions that I’m hoping we can explore more.
Taiwan is the most prominent issue in the escalating spy vs. spy operations between China and the United States.
With both countries confused about the intentions of the other, the NYT reports that American intelligence is obsessed with learning whether #China will order an invasion; and Chinese spies are obsessed with finding out whether #America would defend #Taiwan if so.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/17/us/politics/us-china-global-spy-operations.html

The most touching moments, he said, are when elderly Taiwanese supporters come with drinks on a hot day.
Nearly twenty months have passed since he first started protesting, but he’s still coming out every single week.
And the countries are becoming closer as a result of the war and #Taiwan is learning lessons about the need to prepare for the possibility of open conflict.
He moved to #Taiwan with his wife, who has some family ties here.
On February 24th, 2022, when #Russia launched an all-out war, Alex began protesting in front of this office by himself.
A trickle of support became a flood – more than one hundred people showed up to join him.
“The Taiwanese government supported Ukraine from day one, even though Ukraine has always been oriented more towards China,” Alex noted.

And the Australian Defense Forces are increasing their personnel size by 30 percent by 2040.
In the meantime, the small Ukrainian community in #Taiwan is eagerly building ties of solidarity.
Two days a week, in front of the Russian diplomatic office in #Taipei, you’ll find a man named Alex Khomenko waving a Ukrainian flag, raising money for humanitarian relief.
A typhoon had just passed by recently – which Alex embraces simply as “good flag-waving weather.”

Yurii Poita, a Ukrainian national security researcher living in Taipei, says that it may actually make #China speed up plans for an invasion.
“#China will not abandon its strategic plans to take over #Taiwan,” he predicted and may want to strike earlier due to renewed alarm (and related military buildups) by China’s adversaries in the Asia-Pacific.
#Japan has announced a massive military expansion – the largest since World War II. The #American presence in the #Philippines is growing.

Both #Taiwan and #Ukraine erupted in popular protest in 2014 – Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity and Taiwan's Sunflower movement happened around the same time, as an act of resistance against an autocratic neighbor.
The Sunflower Movement emerged in opposition to a trade agreement between #China and Taiwan. Protesters occupied the country's legislature and executive offices, and hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets, ultimately forcing the government to back down.

The couple ultimately moved to Taiwan two years ago, and have closely observed the full-scale #Russian invasion while noting just how many parallels there are between #Taiwan and #Ukraine.
"We're young democracies... [we both had a] transition to democracy in the 1990s, and so we're really trying to figure out what it means to be a multicultural democracy,” Albert said.
#Taipai residents Michelle Kuo and Albert Wu met while volunteering in #California – teaching in #prison – and quickly bonded over their mutual love for books about revolt and rebellion.
They’re both from what they called ‘mixed marriages’ (one from #Taiwan, the other from #China).
Michelle, a lawyer who specialized in working with marginalized communities in the U.S., needed some convincing to move to Taipei.
Albert, a historian, had told her that his dream was to live there.

@georgetakei The #Taiwan / #China versus #Hawaii / #USA analogy makes sense if you use #hyperloop logic, which unlike circular logic actually undermines the point you’re trying to prove.
It also makes sense if you’re a bought parrot repeating #ChinesePropaganda.
