Everyone losing their mind about all these #tech companies adding support for #ActivityPub / #Mastodon clearly do not remember what happens every time a new open standard starts to threaten their walled gardens.
It's literally EEE every time. There's nothing else that's going to happen. It may be driven by enthusiastic engineers or even the occasional product manager, but make no mistake: the moment that leadership can safely do it, they'll take all the new users they gained with the good PR and interoperability and lock them in.
Will the #fediverse gain some new permanent people who realize they don't like the corporate confines? Absolutely. Is this good for people in the short to mid-term? You betcha. But there's nothing exciting here. At best it's an opportunity to pull as many people as we can from the corporate controlled platforms, but historically this isn't what happens.
