My 1 yr old #nephew is wearing the birthday fleece jacket that I got for his 1st birthday in late October. It's still bit big on him but he is growing pretty quickly & can wear it for 2-3 more months. Raven Sol is holding a piece of fern that he picked up on park trail.
Three places I reliably hear Teochew (Chiu Chow) spoken on the streets: Little Saigon (Tenderloin, San Francisco); 13th Arr, Paris; Chinatown, Bangkok. Most of the times in places and among people who don’t code as ‘Chinese’ to others.
Our food is hidden in Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian menus, so much so I’m surprised if I see Teochew food in a straight up Chinese spot (which is more mainland or HK style, and also therefore different).
In the Bay Area: https://www.sfchronicle.com/projects/2023/bay-area-teochew-food
I know in some cultures, children who are fussy about food are seen as a burden, but in my culture it made me a legend.
My grandparents’ fave story to tell was the one about how, at the age of 4, I was presented with a silver pomfret and a black pomfret, and I chose to eat the ‘better fish’.
Fish (eating of, choosing of, cooking of, preparing of) is super important in my #Teochew culture. My parents weren’t sure I was ready to live abroad until they saw I could select and gut fish on my own!
I’ve had a very weird and stressful week (mostly because my baby dog best friend has been sick) so I am making myself my comfort food: Teochew muay 潮州糜, fried pompano, chai poh nerng (radish omelette) ; topped with olive preserves and red chillies, like my ancestors intended (like I had for lunch almost every other day as a child)
I identify as a loud mouthed squinty eyed #Teochew bitch with a lot to say about injustice. I also post a lot about my plants/garden, rewilding & conservation works, visual arts(my own & others), frequently share music, randomly share life experiences & am highly confrontational with bigots/racists - before I block their asshats. I'm a longtime #POC activist & don't tolerate sealioning or mansplaining or greenwashing douchenozzles.
Mom just saw Jehovah's Witnesses doing door to door recruiting outside & laughed when they looked at our house & skipped knocking on it. Mom's howling with laughter & telling me I should go ring my gong a couple times to see if they'll jump/run back to car. Last time JWs came to our door & wouldn't accept 'We're Taoists & not interested' answer - I stopped talking. Grabbed my gong, banged it & chanted 'Leave Now' in #Teochew, until they got scared & left. They never came back👍
With my nonbinary Korean fellow activist friend, from Vancouver, at VGH. We met over 2 yrs ago on remote frontlines & were one of very few Asian activists with boots on the ground at protest camps in BC. They're an amazing human being. We worked on deescalation training, accessibility solutions & nonviolent defense tactics together.
I cleared out two medical hallway clinics by doing this method. I don't give a shit about what other people think. Over half those asshats in lineup were coughing openly & they are selfish, inconsiderate germ spreaders.
Why do white people judge Asians for thinking protecting ourselves & our community is a bad thing?
Fucking shit ass colonizer brains.
You know how sometimes you're just doing your regular thing & then find yourself grinning because a random memory started playing in your brain & makes you feel so good - just remembering the moments? I just experienced that.
I remembered how my Grandma sent me & my brothers off to harvest snails - after teaching us which ones she wanted us to get. We'd go catch the number assigned by Grandma. She'd cook them up & we'd all eat them with nuoc cham with fresh lime added.
My first time enjoying Pease Lake in the Highlands. 2019.
My friend, Lyrica, introduced me to this lake 🥰 We've been back a few times since this day. We took a small inflatable boat out & paddled to far end of lake. There was only 4 other people at lake at other end.
You can see part of my atrophied legs here - left is thinner than right.
@rowenamonde I'm almost always the only masked person in indoor public places. It fucking sucks that so many people treat covid like it's over/not serious. I only got 3 racist glares today & that's an improvement here. Been attacked for wearing a mask several times over past 3 yrs. One guy spat on my Mom after calling her a stupid Chinese disease carrier. That's what we had to experience in public. It's not OK.
It comes after our traditional 49 days of daily respect/honouring ceremonies at home altar for Dad. We are a very traditional #Teochew #Taoist family. I'm more connected to my Matriarch family in terms of cultural traditions & am very grateful for important teachings by my elders & ancestors. I feel like a fucking alien a lot - living in diaspora in Canada.
I wanted to host a wonderful multicultural potluck gathering early Fall but can't host anything like that or host any big cultural holiday events like Chinese New Year until a full year has passed since Dad's passing.
This is one of the ways us traditional Teochew Taoist Chinese honour our most beloved family loved ones. It is not a huge sacrifice. It is showing enduring respect & honour for my deceased Dad ❤
My 2 jars of homemade salted plums.
A Chinese tea cup is beside them - for scale.

Mom took 2 nice photos of me in our front yard garden. Sitting at our morning tea spot.
Done eye exam. Heading to my blood test appointment in less than an hour. I've booked multiple various medical appointments over this week & next 2 weeks. I'm trying to get all my personal health into check. An essential part of my self care plan is seeing medical professionals when necessary.
In #PortAlberni in early the 1990s.
Shortly after my 4th Uncle(Dad's little brother) & Aunt bought a small store & built their family home beside it. They've since retired & sold the store. They still live in Port Alberni.
Pictured from left to right:
My Mom, big Auntie Chan, 4th Auntie Louise & Uncle Minh
Found my first public school photo in a shoebox today.
I cried for an hour prior, was still crying when put on seat in front of photographer & was forced by teacher to get my photo taken. I didn't want any photos done. I was 5 yrs old. This was at Hampton elementary school.
My first batch of #fermented #SourPlums is done & jarred. There's over 300 in this jar. Starting next batch in 2 weeks, with some of my yellow #plums this time. Preserved with simple coarse salt & cane sugar.

These are the #sour #plums being #dried on our deck, under the sun. Solar dehydrating ✌
Day 1 of making #homemade #preserved #Chinese #SaltedDriedPlum #snacks 🌞 The large tray is brought in at night & put back out an hour after sunrise. Only coarse #salt & #CaneSugar are used; same simple method that our village family overseas has been using for generations.
Current feeling quite contentful, chilling in the countryside on cabin patio #selfie 😊
I feel so much better - just being here. I'm surrounded by plants, trees, ducks, chickens & plenty of local wildlife. I miss living on rural properties very much - it's more my kinda lifestyle.
My longtime trusted friend, Jam, captured some of our #Teochew #Chinese #Taoist #funeral cultural ceremonies for Dad's service recently. I miss my Dad so much. My heart will hurt for a long time.
All of Dad's funeral photos are being put on disc for far away loved ones who couldn't attend services for Dad.
Himalayan honeysuckle is a plant that's been used in #Chinese #medicinal treatments for centuries. It is one of the ancient plants used for generations by multiple ethnic groups for a variety of ailments - including measles, jaundice, asthma, arthritis & cystitis - to name some.
It's also called ghost flute plant by Chinese folks because you can make flutes from the stems - creating an eerie sound.
I'll slowly get caught up with friends here this week.
We got some quality time with my baby nephew today. That brought us some much needed family love & smiles. We're leaving Dad's memory altar on this table until 49 days have passed. Then, we're moving it to a more permanent space in home.
First family photo without Dad's physical presence. Taken by my friend Nadene. Will be added to memorial tribute DVD for our loved ones afar.

My parents don't have many photos left from their life in #Saigon ( #HoChiMinh city) but there's a few which remain. This is from their wedding day. Dad is the man on left & man in black suit in front is my late Grandpa. Uncle Kieng is my eldest Uncle on Dad's side & standing behind great Uncle - who was killed before our family fled #Vietnam & started an uncertain new future overseas. We lived in an Indonesian refugee camp for several months for coming to Canada.
@thepoliticalcat @asbestos Archaeologists & cultural anthropologists recently found some of our ancestor & living infrastructure & neolithic remains that imperialist #China tried to erase from #history too.
We're STILL HERE! #gaginang ❤🙌 Some of us will fight til we die, for our culture & our peoples.

Signing off with a very well known #Chinese #LoveSong - sung by #TeresaTeng - she was a #Teochew #Chinese who made it big in China & HK. This song has been translated & sung by many other #Asians since; in different countries; in different Asian languages. It is my fave Chinese love song.

Since childhood, I've enjoyed hearing #CookingSounds & find those sounds comforting & contenting. From the methodical chopping sounds to the sizzle of raw foods dropped into a hot oiled wok & everything before, during & after cooking a meal.
