Three places I reliably hear Teochew (Chiu Chow) spoken on the streets: Little Saigon (Tenderloin, San Francisco); 13th Arr, Paris; Chinatown, Bangkok. Most of the times in places and among people who don’t code as ‘Chinese’ to others.
Our food is hidden in Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian menus, so much so I’m surprised if I see Teochew food in a straight up Chinese spot (which is more mainland or HK style, and also therefore different).

I know in some cultures, children who are fussy about food are seen as a burden, but in my culture it made me a legend.
My grandparents’ fave story to tell was the one about how, at the age of 4, I was presented with a silver pomfret and a black pomfret, and I chose to eat the ‘better fish’.
Fish (eating of, choosing of, cooking of, preparing of) is super important in my #Teochew culture. My parents weren’t sure I was ready to live abroad until they saw I could select and gut fish on my own!
I’ve had a very weird and stressful week (mostly because my baby dog best friend has been sick) so I am making myself my comfort food: Teochew muay 潮州糜, fried pompano, chai poh nerng (radish omelette) ; topped with olive preserves and red chillies, like my ancestors intended (like I had for lunch almost every other day as a child)

Mom just saw Jehovah's Witnesses doing door to door recruiting outside & laughed when they looked at our house & skipped knocking on it. Mom's howling with laughter & telling me I should go ring my gong a couple times to see if they'll jump/run back to car. Last time JWs came to our door & wouldn't accept 'We're Taoists & not interested' answer - I stopped talking. Grabbed my gong, banged it & chanted 'Leave Now' in #Teochew, until they got scared & left. They never came back👍

You know how sometimes you're just doing your regular thing & then find yourself grinning because a random memory started playing in your brain & makes you feel so good - just remembering the moments? I just experienced that.
I remembered how my Grandma sent me & my brothers off to harvest snails - after teaching us which ones she wanted us to get. We'd go catch the number assigned by Grandma. She'd cook them up & we'd all eat them with nuoc cham with fresh lime added.

Found my first public school photo in a shoebox today.
I cried for an hour prior, was still crying when put on seat in front of photographer & was forced by teacher to get my photo taken. I didn't want any photos done. I was 5 yrs old. This was at Hampton elementary school.
My first batch of #fermented #SourPlums is done & jarred. There's over 300 in this jar. Starting next batch in 2 weeks, with some of my yellow #plums this time. Preserved with simple coarse salt & cane sugar.

Himalayan honeysuckle is a plant that's been used in #Chinese #medicinal treatments for centuries. It is one of the ancient plants used for generations by multiple ethnic groups for a variety of ailments - including measles, jaundice, asthma, arthritis & cystitis - to name some.
It's also called ghost flute plant by Chinese folks because you can make flutes from the stems - creating an eerie sound.

My parents don't have many photos left from their life in #Saigon ( #HoChiMinh city) but there's a few which remain. This is from their wedding day. Dad is the man on left & man in black suit in front is my late Grandpa. Uncle Kieng is my eldest Uncle on Dad's side & standing behind great Uncle - who was killed before our family fled #Vietnam & started an uncertain new future overseas. We lived in an Indonesian refugee camp for several months for coming to Canada.
