Tumblr reminded me of this Terry Pratchett quote and it's really so characteristic of the spirit of his writing. Not holding back when it comes to the injustices of the world, but always with a dose of wit, humour, and openness to hope and kindness, never crossing over into full cynicism.

A great example of how being pragmatic and being misanthropic and nihilistic are two very different things.

The Threatened Swan by Jan Asselijn - painted in around 1650. It's everything I never knew I needed in a piece of #art... I love it in its own right as a powerful image, but also for the contrast with the surrounding pieces in the gallery.

#TerryPratchett has not just writen #Discworld books but also a few #books for children. If I wanted to read one/some of them in #Dutch (because I'm currently learning the language), which one should I try first?

Something that is "easy" to read yet still has STPs typical style and character? Or do you think that Pratchett might still be too difficult? (I estimate my level to be around A2/B1 but know German and English very well)

One of the great things about #Discworld is the depth and subtlety of the writing. It touches on many problems in society, but it doesn't hit you over the head with them and say "do better!". #TerryPratchett masterfully weaved them into an enjoyable story, with relatable characters, and by the end of a book all but the most resistant to change will be thinking, at least a little more, like a better person.

Society needs more of his kind of storytelling. He was gone too soon.

Er steigt aus, bestellt Rob den Assistenten ihn abzuholen. Zuhause packt er dann sofort seinen Führerschein in einen Briefumschlag und schickt ihn zurück zum Amt.

FWIW, the #BBC adaptation of Good Omens is probably my favourite. I have read the book & seen the TV version, but the radio adaptation wins for painting mind pictures & humour. If you are a fan of #TerryPratchett and haven't heard it, do listen.

I have been massively enjoying this rerun of the radio series on @BBCRadio4 of the much missed #TerryPratchett + @neilhimself 's genius book #GoodOmens.
It's been wonderful to introduce a whole new generation to both Pratchett and Gaiman's work.
A big recommend if you haven't read/heard it.

Beim Reinblättern weiter hinten zufällig gleich Stelle gelesen, die erklärt, warum Heyne Pratchett in den 90ern verloren hat: a) wegen falscher Cover und irreführenden Sammelausgaben und vor allem schließlich b) wegen Werbung für Maggi-Fertigsuppen in »Pyramiden«.

Was reminded of this Discworld quote and it holds so much truth. Not because the uber-privileged aren't heavily to blame, they are. But the inclination to mentally place the issue far away from us is also real. We want it to be some other men, some other white people, some other communities that are "bad", not ours, not here, so we are safe from the problem and free of the responsibility. But a major part of change and growth is self-reflection.
