Was just stunned by a #SpringThing #interactiveFiction game. I was so gobsmacked that the review I then wrote could only start with "Wow. I’m not quite sure what to say about this." https://intfiction.org/t/viv-dunstan-s-2023-spring-thing-autumnal-jumble-impressions/61524/38 #indieGames #textAdventures #gameDev #creativeWriting #parserGames

:abunhdowohop: ’ello! I’m Anjune. I’ve been here since 2017. Here’s a bullet-pointy #introduction, spring 2023 edition:

Timidly trying my hand at some atmospheric #electroindustrial with #Renoise among other neat tools and toys

· #Prose-#poetry perpetrator, albeit rarely

· Compulsive #language pedant who should know better

· #Linux and #Amiga putterer

· Escaping into fantasy, faerie, SciFi and RPG lore & art

· Learned English from pen friends, #TextAdventures & #InteractiveFiction, song lyrics, the #DemoScene, & the internet. Accordingly old and decrepit!

· Things I currently want to learn but struggle to make myself: music theory, baking, embroidery, audio production, balcony gardening, LÖVE2D and/or libtcod

· Part-time-vegan vegetarian

· A #SocialLibertarian? Not too chummy with ideologies, and never ever sure I’m right

· At best #homoflexible & #demisexual; #pancuddly; favouring #polyamory & romantic #PowerExchange… but really, I’d just like some hugs again sometime

New post on RetroDon

Adventure in Time and Space

The game starts in the laboratory and we are already introduced to the professor's time machine, although we can't get in it yet. Have a good look around and examine everything here, but it soon becomes fairly obvious we need to leave here and go look outside.

Well, this kept me thinking for a while: Infocom #textAdventures don't know the word "use" (at least, Planetfall and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy don't, for sure).

Yup! Being skillful in that kind of games actually requires you to fully specify how to use things on things or people.

In a way, LucasArts (and their "relatives") dumbed us down a bit

#textadventure #cheapPhilosophy

Screenshot from Frotz playing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
The game starts with Arthur Dent waking up in a dark room and his head spinning.
I said "use light" and the game responded with "I don't know the word use".

Fired up the Commodore 64 this afternoon, for the first time in ages, to start playing through the first of what seems like a million text adventures.

I wasn’t quite prepared for the story that unfolded!

I’ll be posting the full review soon over on my blog.

Musing an early in-development #Inform7 #InteractiveFiction game. Brainstorming some ideas to move the plot on in #Twine. Which I haven’t used much, certainly not for any long-term Twine piece of interactive fiction. But I do like to brainstorm in it some times.

You're in luck! I've just rediscovered my mid-2010s image edit stash!

Here is Grue-the-cat's name origin story in the form of a quote from Infocom's text adventure Zork.

#Grue #caturday #AdventureGames #TextAdventures #Infocom #Zork #InteractiveFiction

A very small and fluffy tabby kitten lies with its head leaning against a white wall.

At the top of the photo, a message in a white monospaced font reads:

You have moved into a dark place. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

My 11yo expressed interest in #TextAdventures/#InteractiveFiction. I wrote stuff in #Inform years ago but I don’t think that would be his jam (and as beautiful as #Inform7 is I don’t think he’d be able to learn it quickly enough to avoid losing interest).

Does anyone know of good tutorials for #Twine that might be accessible to a bright 11 year old? I’d be happy to help him but I’d love to have something he could also read himself while I’m at work. Thank you!

Prompted by some reading tonight I thought of a new #InteractiveFiction game idea I could develop. Or at least I thought it was new to me. Digging through my #Inform7 source code directory I find I’ve tentatively started something similar in the past, but hadn’t extended it further. Now feeling inspired to push on! It’s a nice thing to work on idly, as change from the fuller games I’m developing. Though it may be a little lightweight for many fans of #ParserGames and traditional #TextAdventures.

Quick bit of #InteractiveFiction game coding before bed (finally awake enough #neuro for a brief burst!), including adding some more ASK X ABOUT Y responses in my Inform code. I have a list of things to finish off in a game that would be nice to enter in #IFComp next year. If I can just get it all finished. Health permitting. The game’s core through story has been coded, but I have a lot to fill in re furnishings/objects in rooms, dialogue responses etc. #TextAdventures #ComputerGames #Inform7

It’s been eight years since I last touched this, and now I got that light-in-IF bug again. Will I ever understand my own fumbling and speculations and notes?

#InteractiveFiction #TextAdventures

Edit: How is it that I still can’t get vim to soft-wrap at word boundaries?

Screenshot of a notes file in vim:

18.1.2015

About the doors that need to be self-illuminating (brightness = 1) at least to be re-openable after killing the light by shutting them: maybe adjust their class to dim them to 0 before printing their descs and rebrighten them to 1 afterwards. brightness = 0 means they need ambient light to be seen, just like chairs and shoes and statuettes.

-------------

17.1.2015

brightness = 1 lets us open doors in "pitch black" darkness, but also makes all doors fully lit. hmm.

Made Thing have sightSize = small, so objects won't be listed and can't be interacted with from remote locations by default and won't need twice as many descriptions. What if we want (say) pole-mounted binoculars, though? Then we're still just dealing with remote rooms, not little objects. It'll be a "look through binoculars" action, not an "examine tiny stuffs" action. Maybe. Characters and proxies like facades should probably remain medium or large.

Made Spider (the ephemeral, secret light probe) have sightSize = large, so open doors won't act all weird when the object which is used to test for that lookable-through-ness isn't visible even if the remotely viewed room is lit

--------------

The defective nothing-special-about-the-north-wall message (it falsely assumes dim light) is not from lookdir, but the tweaked default library?

Interactive Fiction - I've played/read the winner of this competition and it was quick and lovely. A nice variety of story topics as well from Sci Fi through to The Thirty Nine Steps.

At the moment I'm working my way through A Long Way to the Nearest Star which uses one of my favourite Sci Fi tropes - the sarcastic, possibly murderous, space ship AI.

I have just finished Hibernated by Stefan Vogt on my Commodore PET. An absolute triumph of a game that drops a few narrative bombshells on you as you progress.

Also, that particular description (pictured) hit me as I was listening to this new track by Fvnerals...

Here are the final results from the 2022 #IFComp for #InteractiveFiction games. This is a fantastic annual competition, that has been going since 1995. I remember its start! This year there was a wonderfully creative mix of traditional parser #TextAdventures and newer choice based games. I managed to play 20/70 games during the competition, and playtested 2 others. The favourite game I managed to play won the competition, much to my delight. Anyway check out the entries. https://ifcomp.org/comp/2022

Was asked earlier what my favourite #InteractiveFiction games are. Really hard question! My answer: Infocom’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Graham Nelson’s Curses and IFComp winning The Wizard Sniffer. All traditional parser #TextAdventures though I love choice based too. I’ve been playing IF since 1980, when I first tried Colossal Cave on an Apple II. So many fond memories. I also recommend checking IFComp winners from last 28 years. Many superb games in that list. https://ifcomp.org/history
