Another gripe about #texture sites. Why do they often display the texture on a frigging sphere? Texturing a sphere so that it looks like a real physical object is hard, thanks to it being, well, a sphere. Imagine trying to wrap such a tread plate around a large ball in the real world. That a texture is "seamless" only helps when you apply it to mostly flat surfaces, right? On a sphere you will either get ugly seams or then the scale of the texture will vary wildly. Or am I missing something?

Why don't various sites that offer suitably licensed PBR #textures bother telling for each #texture that corresponds to some real-world material what the physical size of the texture square is, roughly?

For instance the texture in the image, a typical metal plate as used for walkways in industrial plants, ships, and whatnot. It is a real-world texture. When you use it in your 3D model you want the scale to correspond to reality. Why don't they tell the physical resolution? @jimmac, any insight?

This metallic tread plate is highly rusted and oxidized. Rust and dirt is everywhere, especially on studs.

This evening I had to make a texture for the decks, but in the end the resolution of the image was too low, I tried to make a rendering with #Blender to generate the planking, but it goes to error with a rendering of 16688x4320, the only solution is to make the planking in 3D, it would be nice if one day we could use vector textures in #SVG with Blender. #b3d #texture #uvmap

You can use 3D Textures in my cloud shadows package (Gimme Cloud Shadows) for animated shadows.

However, whenever you reached y = 1, as the texture was not seamless, you had to animate back to 0 (as smooth as possible 😊)

But I have finally figured out a way to make the 3D textures seamless in all directions! 🔥

This works analogous to the simple 2D texture tiling algorithm.

With people migrating from Unity at the moment, I'm guessing there are asset store vendors worrying about a drop in sales too.

If you're a #sprite designer, #texture artist, animator, 3D modeller, #audio composer, etc, you might want to check out https://www.solar2dplugins.com It has a smaller customer base and doesn't accept actual plugins or game templates for anything but Solar2D, but sound and graphic packs are always wanted. I’m in an experimental mood. Not working on anything other than figuring how to make new textures and playing with various acrylic wash recipes.

I’ve been playing with some cheap halloween mesh I got from the dollar store. I apply the mesh and gesso in various ways and then try different washes. I keep the parts I like and start over on the parts I don’t. Currently starting on the fourth layer and planning on a fifth. These are some of the parts I like so far.

#MastoArt #texture #acrylic #oc

I want to apologize in advance for my description of this and the three others in this post. Before applying the second layer of gesso I used a fairly concentrated red acrylic wash on the first layer. After that wrapped the entire board multiple layers of the mesh, added the gesso on top of the mesh and thoroughly abused a paintbrush forcing the gesso the mesh to the canvas board. This part of the board wasn’t as covered as the rest and I didn’t need to abuse the brush to get the gesso through. This was near the edge of the board so the mesh pulled away from the gesso while it was still wet, creating a series of thread-like tendrils fanning out like an alien plant. I added a moderately concentrated black acrylic wash (with dish soap so the wash would flow to the crevices better) over this layer which dulled down the red wash quite a bit to a beautiful maroon color. If spiders made their webs from gesso, that’s what this would feel like. Not one of those pretty and symmetrical one either. The wild ones that cover as much area as possible.
This is exactly the same as the first picture - less gesso, not as covered, mesh released from the gesso while it was still wet, wild spider webs made from gesso. Even the color are the same, the only difference is instead of looking like an alien plant it’s almost reminiscent of Spiderman’s mask that melted on a Phoenix, Arizona sidewalk in the middle of summer.
Same deal as the earlier pictures, mesh wrapped around board, gesso on top of the gesso and pushed through with a paintbrush. This time, the gesso was mostly dry before the the mesh released from it, leaving behind a grid pattern. I used concentrated red and green washes, red around the outside edge of the grid and green on the grid. If you were to touch it it would feel similar to a screen in a window or a door, except the grid is bigger here than on a window or door screen.
Same as before, mesh around the board, this area wasn’t covered much, not a lot of gesso, and the mesh pulled away while the gesso was still wet. This area looks like if you cut a pomegranate in half if the seeds were concave instead of teardrop-shaped. I even painted the concave parts with multiple red washes in a variety of consistencies that looks close to the same color as pomegranate seeds.

A geometric composition of concrete, rusting steel, old wood, and dark water. Introduction:

Hi! Hawkwinter here. New to mementomori.social.

I had been primarily using calckey.social the past while, (and some of the extra features their software adds are great) but they've been having frequent stability /usability issues that were making it hard to use, and Roni said I could set up here. I have nothing against the Firefish devs / admins on a personal level or anything, they seem quite nice from the bits we've interacted.

I'm also @Hawkwinter@mastodon.art - but I'm mostly trying to stick to using that for art-related stuff.

I do 3d character stuff, 2d graphic design and cartography stuff. A bit of 2d character art. Tech/it stuff. Programming. Working on a Visual Novel in Ren'py. I'd like to figure out how to make VRChat and VTuber avatars.

Not currently accepting commissions, but I would probably like to in the future.

I like TTRPGs? Particularly GURPS, & heavily homebrewed D&D3.x with Eclipse. Also Rolemaster 4e. Played other stuff over the years but those ones are my favorites.

For entertainment, I like Wuxia, and Xianxia, and the Forgotten Realms, and Tolkien.

I'm interested in sustainable longterm architecture (to last centuries, not decades), science and tech, passive heating and cooling systems, and high-efficiency masonry woodstoves. 'Fancy-offgrid'. Regenerative agriculture and watershed management is neat too.

I occasionally read some philosophy. Nietzsche has a few neat ideas on individual self improvement, but the Tao te Ching has neat ideas on other stuff, like a few ideas on how a functional society would work. I'm not going to pretend to be a well-read philosophy student though.

In addition to regular social-media-ing, Gamedev-type stuff might get posted from here sometimes too? I'm really not sure.

Anyway, here's some misc examples of my work in different mediums / styles. The custom in-game menu screenshot is a WIP. I've been doing a good bit of reprogramming and extending things under the hood.

Cheers!

Hi! Hawkwinter here.

Been on Calckey.social a couple days but haven't made an intro post yet.

I'm not brand-new to Fedi, but new to Calckey & been really liking it here the past couple days for general social-media-ing {mostly Friendica before, it wasn't bad but I think I like Calckey better}, You can also find me periodically posting art from .art
@Hawkwinter@mastodon.art

I do 3d character stuff, 2d graphic design and cartography stuff. A bit of 2d character art. Tech/it stuff. Programming. Working on a Visual Novel in Ren'py. I'd like to figure out how to make VRChat and VTuber avatars.

I like TTRPGs? Particularly GURPS, & heavily homebrewed D&D3.x with Eclipse. Also Rolemaster 4e. Played other stuff over the years but those ones are my favorites.

Curious about HERO & HARNMaster. If I'm going to Shadowrun I like 4e best by a wide margin. Not a big D&D 5e fan. I have a gripes with its mechanics and setting game design. Super rules-lite games aren't really my thing either as you could guess from my list of favorites - I like the ones where it feels like I'm running around in {or simply running if I'm GM} a simulated world with humanlike NPC behavior {to preempt the question of 'Why not just videogames'}. I'm aware my RPG tastes are niche, & that's okay.

For entertainment, I also like Wuxia, and Xianxia, and the Forgotten Realms, and Tolkien.

I'm interested in sustainable longterm architecture (to last centuries, not decades), science and tech, passive heating and cooling systems, and high-efficiency masonry woodstoves. 'Fancy-offgrid'. Regenerative agriculture and watershed management is neat too.

Like a lot of the people here, I think my worldview has become a bit more collectivist at the societal level rather than hyper-individualist with indifference to the exploitative capitalism we have now, though I don't think violent revolution is a good idea, instead favoring building out collective networks of people that takes care of its members and federates with similar collectives and then can lobby the government also as a collective unit rather than leaving individuals to fend for themselves against the rich and the powerful, is a better way to go. (Something like guilds. Or a labor union not dependent on having a specific job, or like how I've seen Jehovahs Witnesses have their own sub-society of networking and helping eachother out that's not always for-profit).

I occasionally read some philosophy. Nietzsche has a few neat ideas on individual self improvement, but the Tao te Ching has neat ideas on other stuff, like a few ideas on how a functional society would work. I'm not going to pretend to be a well-read philosophy student though.

In addition to regular social-media-ing, Gamedev-type stuff might get posted from here sometimes too, or maybe it'll be a thing to get its own profile? I'm really not sure. Closeup of the leaf of a hosta, vibrantly alive and bluey-green on one half, the other side orange and deflated. There's a slim line down the middle where the change has only partly happened, where the leaf is green rather than orange or bluey.

Some recent items of interest from our garden:

* Stem & bark of a Banksia Rose (rosa banksiae lutea)
* Self-sown Sedum (s. acre aureum) growing amongst some stones
* The centre of a very open California poppy (Eschscholzia)
* The near-ripe "fruit" (apparently edible if you remove the seeds. Never tried it, though) of Billardiera longiflora

Close up of the stem of a rose bush. There are no thorns, and the brown flesh of the stem is interrupted by long parallel streaks of grey maturing bark
Close up of a small sedum seedling. It has rounded fleshy leaves covered in little bumps, and stands amongst decorative pebbles, lit from behind by the lowering sun
Close up, head on of a bright orange California poppy. Bright sunlight causes the petals to appear bright yellow, but closer to orange in the shadows.

The centre of the flower is a series of bright orange spikes arranged in a dome shape.

The whole thing glows in the autumn light
Closeup of a small blue-purple berry hanging from a stem. It has the shape of a capsicum (ball pepper), and a rough-looking texture.

I have the covids and am feeling pretty shite. Hopefully you'll forgive me if I'm a little late for Texture Tuesday this week?

We've got:
* Bright orange fluffy lichen
* Seed pods of a macrocarpa
* A pale green moss
* Rusting paintwork under a roofline

A patch of bright orange lichen on a pale rock. It's interspersed with dark blue nodules (possibly another lichen?)
Close up of two coniferous seed pods on alternate sides of a small branch. There are coral-shaped green leaves coming off around them in different directions, and the background is very blurred
Close up of a pale green moss with near-white tips
Close up view of large patches of rust on a metal sheet, hatched diagonally and painted a pale yellow. In some places the paint and metal have rusted completely through, in others there are paler layers of paint showing under the top coat

Some pictures from up and down our road this weekend

* The patterns of feathers on the back of one of our hens
* An ivy leaf backlit by the sun
* The fading flower cluster of a Statice
* A globby yellow lichen (Xanthoria parietina)

Close up of overlapping feathers, coloured tan and beige, on a chicken's back.

She's a Buff Orpington, so is, of course, called...Buffy. We've had no vampire attacks here since we've had her.
Close up of the glossy leaf of an ivy, lit from behind by the late afternoon sun. The leaf is bright green, with shadow creeping in at the bottom and some distinct shadows cast from other leaves at the top.

The veins are bright, branching out from each other as your eye follows down the leaf
Close up of the flower cluster of a statice (aka Sea Lavender, or limonium). Each tiny flower is mauve and red, with older ones faded to near-white and tending to dry out.

The sun lights the flowers from the side
Close up of a bright yellow licehn (Xanthoria parietina) growing on a tree. It has large rounded plateaux standing out from the tree surface.

Sun from the side lights the lichen, but also creates dark shadows behind it
