Yes.
I shouldn’t be surprised at the question, considering people often struggle with love between human beings. Where we, at least, have our own experience to go by.
Love is the feeling I get when Lou appears to exchange greetings, just because he missed me. I see it in the way Rhiannon rolls onto her back and extends her front paws to me. She squeaks her joy that I'm paying attention to her.
What we are feeling, what they are demonstrating, is real.
in the biology
Studies indicate feelings of love are connected with hormones and neurotransmitters in our brains. The same biological substances are in the similarly-constructed brains of dogs and cats.
There's no biological basis for thinking our thoughts and feelings are so very different from our domesticated companion animals. We are using all the same materials.
If we want a pet to exchange affection, then the pet's ability to do that is what we will look for. I think this is where people might feel hesitant about cats. Far too many believe the myth that cats are not affectionate.
The millions of people who love cats are, to me, an effective counter-argument.
