Philosophy is like being in a dark room and looking for a black cat.

Metaphysics is like being in a dark room and looking for a black cat that isn’t there.

Theology is like being in a dark room and looking for a black cat that isn’t there and shouting, “I’ve found it!”

Science is like being in a dark room and looking for a black cat using a flashlight.

My favourite thing about being an #IndieResearcher is that I still get to teach. Today I'm planning a guest seminar on #neurodiversity, the violence of normalcy & ableism in neurotypical society (legitimised by a lot of NT-dominated #research), how that impacts neurodivergent people, and how #theology reflects that structure. With some hopeful stuff on the grassroots neurodiversity paradigm & how we're speaking back. (As usual, this is too much content for the time I have...)

I went to a book launch the other day. The book "Coming to Faith Through Dawkins" has twelve people telling stories of how they came to Christian faith mainly through reading Richard Dawkins's book "The God Delusion"

If someone made 10 million dollars and gave away 9 million have they giving sacrificially? Is living on 1 million a sacrifice? No. ~David Platt

There are those who have given far more sacrificially giving $1000, $100, $10, and even $1 than how many rich people give.

What we need to think is not what percentage is enough to give, but what amount of our personal income brings us inline with the generosity, sacrifice, and love of Jesus

It occurs to me that the podcast series linked above (& discussed in the post I am responding to) might be a good source for any mental health professionals interested in understanding your Neo-Pagan clients.

It's rare, but I once saw a client chart with something to the effect of "says she talks with a goddess" written in the same session in which a psychiatrist increased dosage of an anti-psychotic medication. I hope that was not the reason by itself...

A reminder that #translation is not just matching equivalents to words, but requires understanding the source culture.

I was confused by the phrase "the Son of God indicated (to) stubborn resistance" in the introduction to the text I am translating (where the same #Syriac might have "to" or not).

Then I remembered the #medieval authorial practice of self-deprecation, and the scribe is saying not that Christ revealed what stubbornness looks like, but rather that Christ revealed theology to the author, who characterizes himself as "stubborn resistance."

(The same realization cleared up several other confusions in the same section. It's a thing.)

John the Baptist said if you have 2 tunics (underwear) give 1 to someone who has none. How far should this logic should extend in our lives?

Should the person with 2 houses give 1 away?
What about cars?
Tents?
Beds?

It seems unlikely that John was only talking about clothing. Yet the American Christian often looks to make a profit on everything they have too much of. Craigslist & FB Marketplace are easy ways to profit off those that don’t have what they do.

The life and work of the Alsatian hermeticist and Egyptosophist, René-Adolphe Schwaller de Lubicz (1887-1961) attests to the continued presence of a distinctly nondual current of alchemical precept and practice in which material transmutation and spiritual transmutation are not separate nor merely coincidental endeavours but two indispensably linked sides of the same coin.

We live in a culture that tells us we should have a Christian car mechanic, barber, and all our friends should be Christian too. Otherwise we’ll get swindled and led astray.

But we worship a God who was the friend of sinners and we are called to be like Him and reflect His character to those around us.

Our religious culture is designed to control us whereas our relationship with Jesus is designed to free us.

Violet Mary Firth, later known as Dion Fortune, was one of the most formidable occultists of her day. Her work was an important influence on many Neo Pagans, most notably Gerald Gardener, but also on others later such as Druids Isaac Bonewits and John Michael Greer. She was an interesting mix of clairvoyant medium and university trained psychologist and, I argue, much of her work was remarkably shamanistic in character.

Just saw a post claiming that if Christianity is progressive then it is heretical because God doesn't change.

While it's true God doesn't change, that doesn't mean his people have been good at following his commands. A Christian people who are not progressing the cause of the widow, orphan, immigrant, and unheard are not living a biblically defined Christianity. And as Christianity has failed to do that for millennia, it might look progressive to follow God's commands now (at least in some areas).

#Baehr and #Thiel lamented what they saw as the fragmented state of conservative networks, with their hidebound think tanks and intellectual centers that hold sway over right-of-center politics.

A rare bright spot on their side, Baehr and Thiel agreed, was the #FederalistSociety. Thiel had, in fact, served as president of the Stanford Federalist Society.

What if there were a group similar to the Federalist Society for #venture #capitalists or corporate #CEOs or members of the #media?

In 2008, Baehr, Hawley and others launched #Teneo — Latin for “I grasp" or “I endure.”

Hawley, then an associate lawyer in private practice, authored Teneo’s founding principles, according to the new member talk hosted by Baehr, and served on the group’s board.

Its core beliefs align with the broader conservative establishment’s: #limited government, #individual liberty, #free enterprise, #strong national defense and #civil society and belief in a “#transcendent order” that is “founded in #tradition, #philosophy, or #theology.”

Okay so, about the #worldbuilding I said I was doing for #writing books and for running a #ttrpg. We're going to touch on #theology of the world here.

My world draws inspiration in part from Neverending Story/Discworld approaches in that some of the characters are aware of our world, they're creations of fiction within a story, and will break through the 4th wall on occasion due to that knowledge.

With that being said, there are multiple religions in this world but only one true religion and one "true" religion. The "true" religion will be the one that has the correct creation story for how the universe came to be, ala Christianity's it was made in seven days. vs the Greek's Gaia gave birth to the Sky who bore the Titans vs LOTR's Eru and singing Arda into existence, etc. I won't be revealing that here quite yet, I have a basic idea but need to hammer out the details. Then create a bunch of creation #myths for all the other belief systems and their associated God(s).

Although, the true religion being the religion that is aware of me, author/GM, and the actors, players. For that true religion I took some inspiration from #Morrowind CHIM theory and started with some sermons. I drew the wording from The Corpus Hermeticum: The Divine Pymander, a third century #occult manuscript (Psst, occult books are great for worldbuilding just fyi). Then changed the words ever so slightly to fit the meanings I wanted to covey in the sermons. Lil' snippet of the first two:

Some time ago, someone said on Twitter that, while most people tend to think of #eternity as a never-ending period of time, that's not true; it actually exists outside of time.

I've finally gotten around to watching Season 4 of Manifest (Not hashtagging that, because despite the CW, that's not what this post is about), and they have a similar concept. It's not called Eternity, but it's basically the same thing. Those who are there can see everyone's past, present, and all possible futures. And the fact that they "remember" each of those futures as though they've already happened adds further credence to the idea that the linear nature of time doesn't apply there.

I feel like it's the same with God. God can't be described in terms of time because God *created* time and exists outside of time. Therefore, Eternity is not a period of time, because it exists outside of time. I don't think you can call it a place either, because it probably exists outside of space, too.

I'd say it's a state of being, but the word "state" implies time. The truth is, we humans are so obsessed with the passage of time that we literally have no way of describing things that know no concept of it.

I think that's what the apostles meant when they said that God is not slow in keeping his promises, or that God's timing is not our timing, and that He makes everything happen exactly when it would be most beneficial (but He doesn't have to explain any of that to us, because He is God, and besides, we wouldn't understand it anyway).

Which is frustrating AF for those of us for whom time is the only thing that matters sometimes, but there you go.

I've been on here since November 2022, and I still don't have an #Introduction post. When I first joined, I was a bit lazy, and also couldn't really think of anything to write about myself, and as the time wore on, it just started to feel superfluous, and even a bit silly, to write an introductory post when I've been here for almost a year already.

But here goes:

I was born and bred in #SouthAfrica, and I really love it here. I often post stuff using that hashtag, both slice-of-life type posts, and occasional commentary on local #news. Specifically, I live in the City of #Ekurhuleni.

I'm an independent author, and have written a few books (website link in my bio), but for various reasons, I haven't written anything long-form in some time.

And one of those reasons is that I'm #PartiallySighted (I have #RetinitisPigmentosa), which has progressed quite rapidly in my old age. As such, you might see me using the #accessibillity hashtag from time to time, as I comment on the sorry state of it in websites and software.

For the same reason, I don't read nearly as much as I used to. I'm trying to get into #AudioBooks, but I'm still struggling with them, man. I really battle to focus long enough to finish one. (At this point, I should probably also tag #bookstodon and @bookstodon). :-)

By trade, I'm a Software Developer, and I love technology. But I'm an old-school lover of #technology, so I dislike web apps, struggle with mobile (also see my #disability), and prefer to work on a big monitor with an external keyboard and mouse, rather than a tiny laptop. Unlike most developers, I can't use multiple monitors because I keep losing the mouse cursor. ;-) #programming #development

Because of my interest in tech, I'm also often commenting on the state of the #Fediverse in general and #Mastodon in particular, and what I think should be done (spoiler alert: I think Mastodon is perfect the way it is, and it should be left well enough alone). :-P

Last but not least, I'm a #Methodist Christian, and my #faith is very important to me, so you'll sometimes see me sharing inspirational #Bible passages and discussing things related to #Christianity and Christian #theology.

Oh, I'm also a husband to the most wonderful wife any man could ever hope for, and a foster father to two beautiful teenage girls, but I don't tend to mention them much, because privacy.

Phew! Quite a wide range, hey? So feel free to give me a follow, if you like. Just be warned that you're unlikely to agree with EVERYTHING I post. :-D

How can finite human beings even speak about the Divine? For centuries, it was thought impossible for any human thought or language to accurately and really describe the divine. Until the 13th philosopher Duns Scotus radically argued metaphysics can only be performed if concepts about the Being of God and Being, in general, were the same. Hence the name of this concept - the Univocity of Being.

I am not here so much to socialize as I am to study and keep in touch with people with interesting ideas and interesting work. I like to be inspired by the unique genius of other people. I suppose you could call that 'social' but I don't really consider anything outside of meat space to be truly social, not even phone conversations. When using a tool to communicate I consider that to be 'work'. Even if it is enlightening and enjoyable some bit of reality is lost in the translation of technology-based communications. To me social networks and the Internet are just fancy forms of book or scroll or papyrus inhabiting a metaphorical classroom and library.

I plan to share interesting #maths and novel #cryptography primitives and tools. Follow if you are curious about #crypto.

I like #retro data networks and retro-styled tools such as #NNTP, #Usenet, #gopher, #kermit, and #telnet. I dislike JavaScript. I like designing with HTML+CSS to achieve interactive interfaces without the JavaScript.

I have dabbled in many programming languages and toolchains over the years. Lately I enjoy coding in #FreePascal, #Python, and #Bash.

I also enjoy studying the #bible #theology and textual criticism with a bit of #philology. I am a believer yet I am not religious. I am openly critical toward religious institutions because I actually have studied them in great detail. I contend that religion is actually a form of unbelief dressed up with nowhere to go. I consider religious proselyting to be on par with smallpox and terrorism in its overall damage to mankind.

I'm also occasionally snarky in a good-humored way. After all, people often post sayings that are wide open for jabs. Sometimes I can't resist. Be careful not to set yourself up for roasting!

Pagans of all types and stripes are welcome to follow and interact with me, so long as they're not some kind of bigot: Polytheistic pagans, monotheistic/duotheistic pagans, henotheistic pagans, atheist pagans, etc. all have a place at my feast table.

I also welcome folks who identify outside of the pagan umbrella! Interfaith solidarity is huge for me, especially in times like these. It's often through interfaith dialogue that we all realize that we share more similarities than differences, even if we hold those differences to be quite important. But, at the end of the day, we're all just people out searching for answers on a quest for Truth.

Scratching a historical, artistic and theological itch today to see the Isenheim Altarpiece, created between 1512 and 1516, now in the chapel of the former Dominican convent in Colmar. Grünewald's painting of the crucifixion makes an immediate impact; and there's much to ponder
#IsenheimAltarpiece #Colmar #France #Grünewald #art #painting #religion #Christianity #theology #crucifixion #Christ @theologidons @theology

Striking crucifixion painting. The suffering Christ stands out in front of a dark sky. On his right, his mother Mary, in anguish, collapses in the arms of the disciple John, and Mary Magdalene kneels in prayer. On his left, John the Baptist points to Christ
The same scene, but now we see the altarpiece in its context in a repurposed gothic nave. Further parts of the altarpiece are visible around and behind the crucifixion scene

Something that came up in my chavruta session last week...

Does God have an internal monologue? Thoughts?

Does thought imply internal debate which implies imperfection? Or does it imply perfection through a truly total consideration and reason?

I’ve already done an #intro but let’s throw some hashtags on here for visibility. Professionally, I work in #tech as a #sysadmin for a big wealth management company. I have a #music degree and still love to #sing, but don’t make any money off of it anymore. I also work in youth #ministry, so I’m happy to talk #christian #theology with folks, particularly those with similarly #progressive interpretations.

On the internet, I #speedrun games on #twitch, and I’m super into #retro #videogames and #hardware. I founded a #community dedicated to working towards greater #diversity, #equity, and #inclusion within the #gaming space. We try and offer a #safespace where folks can collaborate, educate, and advocate. We’ve also partnered with RIP Medical Debt to relieve hundreds of thousands of dollars in #medicaldebt.

Created and moved to my own instance.
I am a #chaplain who works at a #SkilledNursingFacilty
Married with one child
Love the #BoardGames, #Lego, and #Theology

Time for a new #introduction post. I'm Mitch, a #ttrpg creator based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. Occasionally people tell me my games are good.

My games include A MODERN PROMETHEUS, SHOOT N LOOT, and GRIMOIREPUNK, and all can be found at http://linktr.ee/mqsalmon.

I read a lot of leftist Christian #theology and #socialjustice books, and sometimes even post about them. I also read #scifi and #fantasy.

My current artistic hobby is #bookbinding, making nice hard covers for paperback books.

I never did an #introduction post, so it looks like now is a good time.

Hi. I'm Rebecca.

I'm a #teacher, primarily high school English #literacy / #ELA with predominantly second-language speakers. #HabloEspañol. I work in #ChristianEd. I'm interested in everything #education and #pedagogy. Alumna of #ClearTheAir.

My formal training is in #linguistics. I know enough #ASL to get myself into trouble but not out of it. Sign name R-dimple in my local community.

I'm a misfit #Christian who grew up fundamentalist, went liberal Baptist for two years, became a classic case of Young, Restless, and #Reformed (but still Baptist), and am now learning to have no heroes but Jesus. The #Bible is good; #theology is not an intellectual exercise. Holding religious freedom and soul liberty together with a historically Christian sexual ethic. Miss the high church liturgy. #Monasticism-curious. Hate abuse, love survivors. #Missionary sent to the Dominican Republic.

I'm currently learning #photography and currently trying for a year of #WeeklyPhotoChallenge to practice my skills.

It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine. #GoBlue 〽️

(PS I manually approve follower requests for everybody's safety- it's a teacher thing - but the lock icon doesn't mean my account is private 😊)
