I went to school near memorial graves sites of victims of the explosion.
We didn't then, understand the significance of what we were seeing, but certainly did, in years to come.
From personally told stories in our family history, my Grandfather was in Halifax City area during the explosion. Things were chaos, his family in Chester, he was uninjured and he walked 50kms home.
Shock waves were felt further.

I've set up a dhcpv6-pd (with kea) on a linux box. It successfully advertised a route to apple HomePod, it got itself a /64 and the thread devices come up with the IP address from the expected private subnet (based on the bonjour matter announcements).
HomePod also advertises itself as a router to that subnet via RA, so any machine in the same VLAN can access thread devices.
Here's where it gets weird.
I added a manual route to that subnet via both same link-local fe80:: homepod used and via its private fc00:: addresses and neither really works (test only. My aging USG can do BGP if needed so I planned on some peering with my linux box next).
If it only works as link-local then there's really no benefit of dhcpv6-pd mess because I already could access thread devices by their link-local addresses :|

So, for me, every weekend was not a FREEDOM experience, it was rushed, packing seemed to be all we did on Friday and Sunday, competing with weekend warriors heading to camps. Often, there were many drunk drivers on that road. Most of the accidents I remember from the # 7 highway, were alcohol related. That phase seems to have passed, I hope, but it's the first thing I suspect when coming up on an accident. Impairment.

We seemed to like VW Beetles. We had a few Volkswagens in my childhood. You'd flip the front seat forward to let someone get in the back.
There was no way to get out in a hurry, like, if you were about to throw up. I stopped many a trip before we got there.
Once, I was tricked into consuming raw nutmeg, the theory was to *empty me* before the travel. I've never been able to eat Nutmeg since. Please keep your pumpkin pies.

There's lots to see on this highway, but not during 100s of trips we took there; direct from city to our rural destination, either staying with relatives, or at our own cottage.
We'd start on Thursday night, my mother would begin with, "don't forget to pack your ..." there'd be a place near the door where items to be loaded in the car, were left.
My father, on rare occasions, got off a bit early. We'd leave after school.
Crammed in a car for 2 hrs.
I'd throw up (like Jasper)
At one time, we even lived in Port Dufferin, where I remember seeing a little girl, who later became my wife. Considering I never went to school there, I never met her, or even knew her name.
My first cousins were much closer then, we'd stay at my Aunt's home, with five cousins, only one was a boy. We were the two who got into trouble. The few times I fished in my life, it was with my cousin. He caught all the fish. I never did. I Hated Fishing POUT
I wasn't born in Nova Scotia, but everyone else in my family was. The overall impression I have so far is that they have thus far fallen short with Thread in addressing the gaps in Zigbee, and the vendors insist in encumbering their gateways with IoT Cloud garbage such that a truly well done home automation system relies on hacking Tasmota into such a box and committing serious time into the initial configuration of HomeAssistant. So, besides recommending devices with solid Zigbee support I also suggest perusing Blakadder for devices that have been found to be hacker friendly.

Little did he know he kicked off a multi-hour chat about Matter, Thread, LAN control, Nest, Google Home, Zigbee, hubs, border routers, controllers, HomeKit, IKEA TRÅDFRI, and XKCD 927.
The whole industry has screwed this every chance they’ve had, and Matter—the most promising “solution”—is still a huge disappointment.

Obviously, I miss "quote-tweeting" (quote-posting?), which still doesn't really work here, although some of the clients have made it appear like it almost does.
But what I really miss is the ability to compose entire threads before posting any of it. This is very hard to do in a text editor and, of course, requires a lot of cutting and pasting to actually put it into Mastodon.

A very, very common question I’ve seen when discussing anarchism goes something like this:
“Once people are free of state violence and hierarchy, how can they just stop some bad actor from taking over?”
The assumption is that people who are free from coercive hierarchies are powerless to act in their own self defense, alone or in cooperation with each other.
(The question is usually accompanied by some invocation of the dreaded “war lord” whom the questioner assumes will inevitably overrun a nonstate or non-hierarchical community.)

Got a small Thread network: 3 Border routers (2 HomePod, 1 AppleTV), two HomeKit/Thread Nanoleaf Essential Bulbs, one Matter/Thread Eve Outlet.
The outlet started being unreachable very often recently. If I switch off the Nanoleaf bulbs, so they are no longer in the network, the Outlet becomes reachable again.
Mesh networks are great. Except if you mesh with buggy devices, and the network does not route around that.

ProPublica just came out with another amazing piece of journalism, this one on the efforts by the capitalist firm Philips Respironics to hide the harms caused by its products.
Philips makes CPAP ventilator machines designed to be worn while asleep, creating positive air pressure to help people with sleep apnea. Back in 2010, Philips added a foam to its CPAP machines to reduce rattling that kept users awake at night. The foam Philips chose degrades, releasing toxic carcinogens directly into the mouths, throats, and lungs of users.
Philips knew about this *right away.* It spent years hiding reports that it was legally obligated to share with US governmental regulators. It waited over a *decade* to issue a recall. Thousands of people are sick; hundreds have died.
Go ahead and read the whole thing, if you have the stomach for it. It’s a typically excellent piece of investigative reporting by ProPublica:
