We Hokkiens just called them "pao" and what I have here is "bak pau", which has a barbecue pork filling. The ones without filling are called "mantao".
Baozhi had been eaten in China for more than a thousand years from as early as the Song dynasty.
Some people peel off the outer layer before they eat but I like to eat with it. In the past that's because of hygiene as the baozhi is handled by hands that are often dirty.
I know cultural appropriation is a biggie in the #UnitedStates
But as a person who comes from a country where people happily culturally appropriates from each other, and who descended from who people who culturally appropriated & married into British, Chinese and Malay culture ... I never understood the rage around it in the US.

I have a tenuous link to today's world news outside of simply being Malaysian: almost two decades ago* I was in Cambodia for work, and had time to visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. A Cambodian colleague of mine recommended I should carve some time to go anyway and they came along with me. They waited outside or at least didn't follow me through the whole museum and I definitely insisted that they don't have to follow.
I'm not making this post to talk about how I felt walking through that building, seeing things like their hanging tree and all that. I just remembered my colleague waiting for me, and crying even as they tried to talk about those years, because their family was among those murdered there by the Khmer Rouge.

Last week Israelis used the Malaysia-Singapore rivalry to create friction by saying Malaysians are anti Israel because Israel helped Singapore become its own state and has now prospered into a high income nation. They didn’t count on Singaporeans and Malaysians joining forces to fight back the claims.

I found myself agreeing a lot with this Chinese Cooking Demystified video. The southern Chinese (especially tribal) foods near the border with Southeast Asia has a lot more in common with Lao or northern Thai food than with say, Shandong food (which in turn more closely resembles Korean food). The idea of nation states falls flat in the culinary sense.

The delight that my random kitchen adventure (because I need to finish the impulse purchased broccoli that is now a week old) resulted in a gwailo soup (broccoli & white bean) made with a base of Asian fixings (fish sauce, lime juice, sesame oil, Taiwanese vegetable seasoning, and Chinese mushroom stock) 🤣 I panicked because I couldn't find my bottle of minced shallots.

Being an immigrant from a country once described in the New Yorker as “Culinarily, the most homesick people I have ever met” is a trip. I am most sad at breakfast. I miss having a hundred breakfast options, most of them good noodles, or things with spices.
On the bright side, my cooking skills have surpassed that of all of my friends who have never left home for long periods of time.

I can’t even begin to tell you what a massive improvement it is for my mental health that there is now an Indonesian coffee shop near where I live in SF; that PLAYS LAGU GALAU (emo Indonesian music; one of my major music genres!)
It just opened, and.. hearing this music, and this language, around me in a place where I sometimes feel unmoored and far from home, is just a godsend.

It’s taken me till my late 30s to understand the impact of growing up autistic in a deeply conformist society.
On the one hand, being autistic shielded me from some of the worst aspects of growing up there (Singapore). Literally not being able to understand society’s unwritten rules makes it hard to follow them. However, there are still social costs of not doing so, and I was probably masking a significant amount.
I don’t know how to switch that off.
If I ever have 6 months of free time in the future, I’d like to spend a month in each of these places in Southeast and South Asia: Manado, Mentawai, Sabah (not sure which part but I love all of it), Chiang Dao, Bangkok, Sikkim. Mostly revisiting old faves, but also very much missing my old life where all of those places were not exotic, just accessible.
