#Indigenous rights doesn't automatically mean ethnonationalism. How is this difficult.
But sure, tread the same poisonous path we took. Others too. At the end of the day it's just pain talking exacting pain on other people, usually not even the people who stepped on you https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/305590

I have a tenuous link to today's world news outside of simply being Malaysian: almost two decades ago* I was in Cambodia for work, and had time to visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. A Cambodian colleague of mine recommended I should carve some time to go anyway and they came along with me. They waited outside or at least didn't follow me through the whole museum and I definitely insisted that they don't have to follow.
I'm not making this post to talk about how I felt walking through that building, seeing things like their hanging tree and all that. I just remembered my colleague waiting for me, and crying even as they tried to talk about those years, because their family was among those murdered there by the Khmer Rouge.

Last week Israelis used the Malaysia-Singapore rivalry to create friction by saying Malaysians are anti Israel because Israel helped Singapore become its own state and has now prospered into a high income nation. They didn’t count on Singaporeans and Malaysians joining forces to fight back the claims.
People who don’t understand ASEAN geopolitical issues fail to realize that ASEAN countries don’t necessarily go into political fights (because we all know each other’s dirty laundry so we keep that unmentioned).
We ASEAN citizens fight about our regional heritage claims and whose food is better (it’s Thailand and Vietnam)! They also called Malaysia a bully. Buddy, nobody gets to shit on Malaysians except us Indonesians. Nobody.
China's slowdown will not stop growth in Southeast Asia

The Panji Tales
The Panji Tales are a cycle of Javanese stories, centred around the legendary prince of the same name from East Java, Indonesia. The main story of Panji tells of the romance between Prince Panji and Princess Kirana; and Panji's search for his long lost bride. Read more in English Wikipedia article.
Adaptations of these stories are found across Southeast Asia in several languages, not only in Indonesia but also in Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
A Malay edition of the story is available from Indonesian Education Ministry site, titled Hikayat Panji Kuda Semirang. I haven't found more modern adaptation to bahasa Indonesia, if any.
All 3 have violated the policies 👇
All adopted informal policies that not only separated power between presidents, party chiefs, prime ministers and premiers, as well as heads of parliaments. They also accepted term limits and retirement ages for those in high office. No senior leader was supposed to hold power for more than two terms. In Vietnam, they were supposed to resign after the age of 65. In China, after 68.

Every time I am forced to put something in recycling, I think of how that actually means dumping it in my home region, SE Asia
The only reliable way to recycle is to eliminate plastic as far as possible.
Plastic recycling is a failed idea, and a pollutant of the developing world.
This is a longtime family favourite #food snack. It's been a long time since I've made some. It's like a spicy fish jerky. Packs well for outings.
How.... Is this a thing.... How... Do you dehumanize Palestinians so much you can't tell apart them and a Southeast Asian? (Like ... Try looking in the mirror if you're confused. Synopsis: Set in a dystopian Malaysia in which different races are forbidden to mix. A Chinese family moves into their new house to find a scared Malay girl still hiding in it. Should they get rid of her or try to smuggle her back to safety?

Here there's a phrase "penunggang___" most usually "penunggang agama" which is about the kind of hypocritical polemicists who like to give the impression that they're upholding their religion or their race or their country but these things are nothing more than metaphorical vehicles or pack animals for them to ride to success or fame. These personalities often come with the attitude of "terpaling___" or "the most___-ed" eg "terpaling victim"
Anyway, of course they can't commit to this, god forbid that would mean actually addressing the Rohingya problem.
doing a food log planner adjunct so i can look back at what I ate 😘 but also so I can use my stickers now that I remembered where I've been keeping the stash that led to my repentance to not losing my mind over stickers unless it's food-related. #stationery CW: illustrations of food #TootSEA #Malaysia
The older Titiyon said his people did not previously have the concept of #LandOwnership, but this place is where he & his family have always been. So how can others have a claim? It is a fair point. About half of #Taiwan’s land mass-mostly the mountains that form the island’s central spine-is categorized as the #TraditionalLand of #Indigenous peoples. It remains under their control at the local government level.
I found myself agreeing a lot with this Chinese Cooking Demystified video. The southern Chinese (especially tribal) foods near the border with Southeast Asia has a lot more in common with Lao or northern Thai food than with say, Shandong food (which in turn more closely resembles Korean food). The idea of nation states falls flat in the culinary sense.
So! Taiwanese upgraded version of Dragon Inn quite enjoyable, lor. Oso got lady swordfighter and umbrella fighter! Wah! Shiok like anyting! Need more Chinese movies, lor. Anybody got recommendation, welcome ony! Singaporean, Hongkong, Taiwanese, Indonesian, all oso welcome! #TootSEA

When I was in high school I worked at a fancy Thai restaurant and (because every Thai chef thinks I’m a cute Thai girl) I ate so well, every single day. Just all the chefs cooking me a different dish whenever I looked at the kitchen.
It was the best job ever.
Malaysians are such that this year's Michelin announcement of more additions from Malaysia has barely registered - I only saw it days back from my news feed, and I've yet to see it gone even mildly viral. Compared to last year, but mainly it was in the disbelieving tones of, what the fuck is this, and, if this makes the list where the fuck have they been eating, and, cheh KL Penang only Bib Gourmand only, and not to forget, well ok that's one more place we'll just let the tourists and expats go. Hater game strong 🤣 (I'll probably check them out... When I remember to. That said, quite a bit I can't go to anyway which just means I'll forget hahahaha) #TootSEA #Malaysia
The delight that my random kitchen adventure (because I need to finish the impulse purchased broccoli that is now a week old) resulted in a gwailo soup (broccoli & white bean) made with a base of Asian fixings (fish sauce, lime juice, sesame oil, Taiwanese vegetable seasoning, and Chinese mushroom stock) 🤣 I panicked because I couldn't find my bottle of minced shallots.
Being an immigrant from a country once described in the New Yorker as “Culinarily, the most homesick people I have ever met” is a trip. I am most sad at breakfast. I miss having a hundred breakfast options, most of them good noodles, or things with spices.
On the bright side, my cooking skills have surpassed that of all of my friends who have never left home for long periods of time.
This is my Indonesian music playlist
It makes me very slightly less homesick
I can’t even begin to tell you what a massive improvement it is for my mental health that there is now an Indonesian coffee shop near where I live in SF; that PLAYS LAGU GALAU (emo Indonesian music; one of my major music genres!)
It just opened, and.. hearing this music, and this language, around me in a place where I sometimes feel unmoored and far from home, is just a godsend.
It’s taken me till my late 30s to understand the impact of growing up autistic in a deeply conformist society.
On the one hand, being autistic shielded me from some of the worst aspects of growing up there (Singapore). Literally not being able to understand society’s unwritten rules makes it hard to follow them. However, there are still social costs of not doing so, and I was probably masking a significant amount.
I don’t know how to switch that off.
If I ever have 6 months of free time in the future, I’d like to spend a month in each of these places in Southeast and South Asia: Manado, Mentawai, Sabah (not sure which part but I love all of it), Chiang Dao, Bangkok, Sikkim. Mostly revisiting old faves, but also very much missing my old life where all of those places were not exotic, just accessible.
LOL US$1.2M public housing apartment in my home country (that you no longer own after 99 years). I’m screwed on the home buying front everywhere.
Decided to do something “simple” for today. Here is a map of all ferry routes ⛴️ in the #Philippines 🇵🇭 that have been mapped in #OpenStreetMap. Data has been extracted via #OverpassTurbo (data licensed under ODbL 1.0) and rendered via #Leaflet.
Since the Philippines is an archipelago, ferries and boats are important means of transportation especially since the thousands of small islands are too small to host airstrips.
When I worked in Indonesia, lots of folks would read about founders talking about the times they had to ‘eat ramen to survive’ and we’d all be like, so? Indomie IS delicious! Even if I had lots of money, I’d still be eating Indomie!
Then I had to explain to them that not everyone has Indomie as default ramen, and that instant ramen in some places can be.. awful
I'm working on a show and tell photo essay with a local photography collective, about calling the equator my home. There's a quality of light, deep colors, smells, warmth and happiness that I'd like to share with everyone, about that part of the world.
"Hot, warm, pungent and spicy".
I so desperately miss my home, and its colors.

Developed a roll of motion picture film in C-41 chemicals. I'm pretty happy with it.
Here's a pic of Chinatown Complex: shorter building in the foreground is an excellent 'hawker center' that has one of the best 'street foods' in Singapore; in the background, a bunch of older public housing apartments.
