In our own continent we've a rash of right-wing populism that is worrying - Slovakia the latest in play, but it is happening everywhere, with moderate left & Social Democrats in retreat
When they gain power, as in #turkey, #hungary or #poland, they move to control the press and shift rules to favour their continuance in power

Interesting opinion piece in today's Guardian by Will Hutton.
Feels like so much of where we're at can be explained by the sizeable gap between UK's self-image & reality. Cognitive dissonance seems to make people either aggressively nostalgic or dissociate completely.
Confronting the reality of where we're at isn't doom-mongering or defeatist. Surely diagnosis is the necessary first step towards treating the illness.
