One of my favorite night images of Amtrak's Coast Starlight at Klamath Falls. This is a service stop for the train, so it lingers for about 30 minutes, long enough to get out and stretch your legs and make a few photographs.
Did I mention that 16x20 canvas prints are half price until 12/12/23?
My pillaging visit to Malmö SJ #FirstClass lounge was successful what it comes to #FreeStuff: mozzarella salad and a lovely piece of kladdkaka. I could have loitered there for a bit longer: the train to Copenhagen didn't arrive, nor did it leave, for that matter. No explanations provided. The next one came pretty soon so no reason for a tantrum, I'm afraid.
Oh, Belgium, never change!
Yesterday, while travelling from Leiden to Louvain-la-Neuve, my train to Brussels was delayed due to a passenger picking a fight with another passenger sitting a few rows in front of me. Made my connection to Ottignies only just. That train was also delayed, so I missed my connection to Louvain-la-Neuve.
Later, on the way from LLN to Leuven, there were people on the tracks in Ottignies, so there were no trains to or from Ottignies. We managed to catch a bus from LLN to Wavre, where we waited for quite a while for a delayed train to take us to Heverlee.
Today, while I was on the train from Leuven to Liège, I found out that my train to Maastricht was cancelled, then found out that it was uncancelled again 😅 #train #trains #travel #belgium #TrainTravel #Leuven #LouvainLaNeuve #Liege
New at my Patreon... when I stepped out this morning at Castlemaine Station, I noticed a selection of marvellous heritage rail travel posters - especially this one featuring the Overland. What was the story behind its bold claim?

"Why can’t Australians enjoy such a pleasant way to travel, given sleeper trains are going through a major resurgence in Europe, partly in response to climate change? It’s a good question, and there’s a simple answer: because the New South Wales government doesn’t want you to."
For Traveller, I discuss the impending removal of sleeper trains between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane - and imagine what could exist instead, based on the European experience.
NSW sleeper trains: Why the government shouldn’t ditch them https://www.smh.com.au/traveller/reviews-and-advice/sleeper-trains-are-making-a-comeback-why-are-ours-being-axed-20231114-p5ejwl.html
Why doesn't the US have more passengers trains?
No direct Amsterdam to London Eurostar trains for 6 months; Stop in Brussels instead | NL Times
> Train passengers will still be able to travel from Amsterdam to the British capital, but will have to clear passport control and baggage checks in Brussels until a new terminal is ready at Amsterdam Centraal.
I briefly considered asking the elderly man who was painfully slowly making his way to the very end of platform 4/5 with his stroller if he needed help but didn’t because I sensed he knew where he was going. And I was right because he’s now made it to his carefully chosen trainspotting position. Great light today. If only my train actually departed, it would be truly perfect… #TrainTravel

Steam and sparkle: 6 of the best Christmas railway journeys in the UK
Trying to decide if I should take this journey in Nov or Dec. In Nov I had booked myself 4 days of leave. In December I have a week. Instead of stopping at Taiping, however, I'll be going on to Penang. It feels like it needs more than a week to do. Shifting some of my leave to Dec feels like a good idea.
"The night train revolution has been hailed as an alternative to airplanes. Here’s how that’s going"
I absolutely love the night train, going to sleep in one city, waking in another.
I hope this effort succeeds.

Spain: we want people to switch from flying to trains for long journeys.
But a spontaneous 39 minute trip from the city to a village and hiking centre in the mountains? Just because it is a sunny Saturday morning and you happen to have some free time? Better have a private car, because there are no buses, and the train may well be full, and even if you'd be fine with standing for 39 minutes we won't let you.
The Australind at Bunbury Passenger Terminal, ready to run the 14:45 service back to Perth.
These two cars are the only available Australind railcars remaining, with the spare ADP driving car and all three ADQ trailers unserviceable. The class will be retired after the last service on Friday, with new railcars to be introduced when the line reopens in 2025.

Just got off the train at Bristol where I heard a man scold his child who wouldn't get out of his seat by saying:
"If you don't get out of that seat you'll end up in Wales! Is that you want?!" 😂
New at my Patreon... I board the Grainlander, a heritage train heading to the Mallee region for silo art, movies projected on silos, and art made from spanners:

@hans will arrive there in about 5 minutes from now. That a 3 hour travel!
And if you miss any connection you will be stranded.
This train still smells like freshly built leather seats. Though it’s probably not real leather. #TrainTravel
In case you missed this last month - here's my article about riding the Great Southern train from Adelaide to Brisbane:
Australia’s third great train journey is an epic cruise on wheels https://www.theage.com.au/traveller/inspiration/australia-s-third-great-train-journey-is-an-epic-cruise-on-wheels-20231002-p5e93w.html
Also, we’re about half an hour late. Ah, the adventures in the notorious Copenhagen - Hamburg line.
The lights in first class in Copenhagen - Hamburg train don't quite work. It's either sitting in the shades or moving to second class.
It's actually quite cosy here, in the dim glow of emergency lights and people's phones.
‘It’s the same daily misery’: Germany’s terrible trains are no joke for a nation built on efficiency
Good morning as the sun rises eastern Utah on day two of Amtrak's California Zephyr train from California to Chicago. Today we will follow the Colorado River into the Rocky Mountains, arrive in Denver, and fall asleep in Nebraska. Follow along with me! 😎🚆 Questions welcome and encouraged along the day.
Lunch on the California Zephyr! Meals are included for all sleeper passengers and include entree, dessert (except during breakfast) and non-alcoholic drinks. Alcohol is available for purchase. Dinner you get a free adult bevy. Coach can pay $25 to eat in dining car. I had a burger! 🍔
For Traveller, I review the Great Southern train between Adelaide and Brisbane... and have a spectacular view of the swollen Murray River on the way:

@budgetduurzaam een directe verbinding tussen Amsterdam en Copenhagen maakt je vooral veel minder afhankelijk van het op tijd rijden van de treinen in Duitsland.
Van mij mag de reistijd hetzelfde blijven als je weet dat je geen aansluiting hoeft te halen en het dus niet 4 uur later wordt omdat je een aansluiting mist.
14 hours on day trains is a different beast than 23 hours on one night train in a single occupancy cabin. Oh the conversations I had to overhear today. The social studies. But above all: the scenery, the Abendrot 😍
Received more royalties for my book Ultimate Train Journeys: World, which is very welcome... not as much as the previous six months, but it's still on the bookshop shelves and selling (coming up to two years since it was released!).
Ask for it at your local bookshop, or check out more info here: https://www.hardiegrant.com/au/publishing/bookfinder/book/ultimate-train-journeys_-world-by-tim-richards/9781741177350
It was not that long ago, before the bogie and the EU, that we had to exit the narrow-gauge Spanish train at Cerbère, go through immigration and customs in the dead of night in the middle of nowhere, and then board a French train to Paris.
The EU and the Bogie. Two great things that taste great together.
VR, the Finnish railways will buy new rolling stock, where they can take out chairs in summer time to give space to 20 bikes per train. Would love to have this in the Netherlands too, as bringing your bike is too limited in Summer time.
