We went to visit the Two Medicine Lake area yesterday and hiked to Aster Falls. It was a beautiful day, but a bit windy. This historic wooden boat will start giving rides on June 1. It is named for one of the mountains on the lake (not pictured).

3-toed sloth. It even opened its eyes for a minute. If you look carefully at its fur, you'll see his live-in companions, especially ticks.

On May 16, we left the rain forest and settled into our hotel at the foot of the Arenal volcano.
Arenal is not extinct but dormant. It holds the world record of the longest eruption - 1968 to 2010 when it fell asleep. Geological records suggests it wakes up every 300-400 years.
Costa Rica has a lot of volcanoes, including several currently active.
Here are photos of Arenal from our hotel, in its full splendor and hidden by a scarf of clouds.

A 2,000 pound (907 kilo) bison hops over the approximately three-foot-high beam of a useless wood-rail fence. In this pic, the massive head and shoulders are just clearing the fence and the rear legs are still on the ground.

I have too many photos of sloths and all are too cute to sort out and delete. Also, I can't remember which sloth (2-toed or 3-toed) has long hair vs short hair, brown vs grey, smiley face vs piggy face). I heard the explanation so many times but it simply wouldn't stick, I'll just have to google it.

Taking photos in the rain forest was challenging. You could be standing in bright sun and then 20 ft away be in almost complete darkness under the tree canopy.

A “window” on Cap Ferrat.

This is a door seen in Rocca Calascio in #Abruzzo, #Italy. There is a tiny medieval village just under the Rocca, a medieval fortification overseeing all passes through central Italy, and only part of it is used now. This is the entrance to the inn and hostel in the village.

Adult and juvenile Great Egrets congregate into a noisy rookery. Look densely-populated? There can be ten nests per tree. This rookery is surrounded by a moat of water, keeping out raccoons and other stranger danger. That makes it popular.

Many bird populations are dependent on availability of rookery locations like this for survival.
