Don't celebrate Mastodon racing #10million users just yet, as there was a recent beta of #Calckey which shows up as #Mastodon to this user count script, with the side effect that it's been over counting for a few days.
Apparently the dev version has already been patched and once the update rolls out these servers should stop showing up as Mastodon instances to the user count script.
(ETA: And that's leaving out that the script used by the popular count script that just passed 10m includes inactive servers, etc)
We will reach 10 million users (and more), but we haven't already!
I know this is a far cry from the number of users on Twitter, but combined with the enthusiasm and strong work of the developer community behind @Mastodon (and the recent addition of @medium signups), this really feels like a milestone.

There have been a few initiatives recently to do some campaigning about #Mastodon and the #TwitterMigration. March 9 was nominated for #JoinMastodonDay, and the #IdesOfMarch as #LeaveTwitterDay —and while these have generated some noise on Twitter and probably helped revamp interest on the #Fediverse, I have my doubts about the effectiveness of the latter initiative especially.

Two things going on that may be related:
1) Mastodon new user count is up to about 1000 per hour for the last day. This is way up from the recent low hundreds.
2) Reddit r/Twitter is full of complaints that Twitter feeds are now not showing followed accounts, replaced by right wing politics and even porn.

Anyone not thrilled by #TwitterMigration to #Mastodon, like early Twitter, until one has probably over 100 folks you follow, it feels sparse. Developing connections and a community that can hold a candle to what we took a decade developing elsewhere takes more than a few minutes.
Unsure who to ping #here for #admin quesions. Don't want to ping @autumn every time, but separately: is there a fixed admin address or principal to direct questions to here? Or maybe that's unnecessary after I ask here. :)
So: Were we previously not federated with counter.social, but are now? Earlier, it didn't look like people in either place could communicate. Maybe we can now? This will also be a test of sorts.

He’s very keen and loves the idea - he’s going to sound out MBIE and the other moderators at their meeting next week. We’re hoping to get social.govt.nz as a domain and then any registered NZ government agencies can get on board the #Mastodon instance.
Thanks @simon_w for suggesting @aurynn and the CloudIsland stack as well - we’ll put that in our discussion paper.
As we did for #JoinMastodonDay, I'll be tracking this grassroots effort on #Twitter that is using the hashtags: #LeaveTwitterDay or #IdesofMusk -- Technically this all occurring tomorrow March 15th.
