This week I saw a sign to "Queen Mary and Westfield" outside #StepneyGreen tube station, the photo was taken at 9.45pm as the light was fading.
For years I've been calling the place #QMW not #QMUL. That confused some staff and students when my son and I went there for an open day in 2019.
I have always known it as "Queen Mary Westfield", ever since I met a developer in 1997 who was doing an MSc there. He helped me learn PERL.
So it's not my imagination. Proof! It is QMW!
My modest proposal for reigning in costs of #highereducation: Break the expectation that students should go to #university right after high school. If universities had to woo potential students who were already in the work force, we might see less emphasis on cool dorm rooms & the "college experience" and more on actual value for tuition.

Are other universities in the U.S. not paying their invoices in a timely manner? Mine has not paid an invoice submitted in November 2022 and one of my research projects has come to a screeching halt because of it. UCLA Central Accounts Payable is in a shambles. I’m told by a staff member that some vendors have stopped doing business with UCLA because this large, wealthy university isn’t paying what it owes them. It’s not business as usual.

PhD candidates contribute a HUGE amount to the Australian research community, and are paid what has become an unlivable wage. Paying students a livable wage is fundamental to improving equity in the research sector.

Much depends on why you think there's a labour shortage in the first place.
If #university is a barrier to some aspiring #medical staff (partly due to a lack of funded places), then apprenticeships may (relatively quickly) expand the workforce.

When I was working in mid-management at #university my Dean & I coincided that pretty much every problem we encountered was an appointment problem - we had the wrong person in the post - and as you say it was never about their 'skills' it was about their values & how those values then shaped their behaviour to others....
Here's Polly Toynbee's view on where extra money in #education should be spent & its not on reducing #university #tuitionfees;
while I agree with much of her argument about early years education (which definitely needs re-funding), if as she concludes, we want to (also) expand university education, then reforming tuition fees (and overall HE funding) is also necessary.
In the end; the UK needs a massive rethink of how it delivers & pays for all its levels of education!

Absolutely spot-on; I always used to ask my friends why they were subsidising their employer (in my case a #university) when they worked for free, of more often 'forgot' to take days of in-lieu after working a Saturday - I was looked on as a radical for actually policing my hours relatively strictly... but then again I was never the typical academic

I had a Software Engineering Assignment which was due on monday, which asked us to do something called "Storyboarding". I was allowed to choose any idea. Basically, a #storyboard helps to demonstrate a particular feature, or a use-case of an app through sketches, or comic-strips.
Instead of doing something boring like a "Train reservation system", I tried something new: A Storyboard for #Pixelfed!
