Only a couple of days left to get my 5-star rated dialogue plugin for #ue5 at the sale price!

https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/en-US/product/suds-pro-dialogue-system

It’s text-driven so it’s easy to track changes over time, and to work on or review scripts wherever you want. Also comes with a test script runner so you don’t even have to integrate it into the game to test out branching paths, variable logic etc.

Plus it can drive cutscenes, perform camera cuts, trigger character animations, integrate VO, and more!

The Quartz sound system in Unreal is really powerful! You can essentially compose music in-game. Even with computer lag, the sound syncing and scoring will be accurate. As a test here I set up a system that scores your jump timing against every dotted half beat with audio feedback for scoring.

I didn't realize it for a long time (and I suspect most people don't), but Unreal doesn't adjust vertex normals when a mesh is scaled non-uniformly. So even if you squash a sphere into a disk shape, the normals will still point in the same directions as before.
To fix this, you need to multiply the normals by the inverted and transposed LocalToWorld matrix:

Shader exercise of the day:
Tried out Inigo Quilez's biplanar mapping (https://iquilezles.org/articles/biplanar/) in Unreal. Normally I prefer to use only nodes, but since Unreal's node editor doesn't support ints or arrays, which are both needed in this case, I had to use a custom node.
It's not as elegant as I'd hoped, but it works.

This might be useful to someone; I was looking into cheap, deterministic but more uniform random number generators (but not perfectly uniform) and noticed that UE already has a "Halton()" function, which implements the Halton Sequence: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halton_sequence.

However it was only used internally for various things, and not really exposed to engine users in a useful way.

So, I made a random stream util which makes it easy to use: https://github.com/sinbad/StevesUEHelpers/blob/master/Source/StevesUEHelpers/Public/StevesBalancedRandomStream.h #ue5 #unreal

I have some thinking to do, then.

I don't even share the hate boner of the gaming community for Epic's storefront on principle, I just stopped using it and ended up repurchasing a few exclusives out of sheer convenience, so I may be better off with a console version instead if I'm gonna get around to a PC version elsewhere later.

I really like using the #Unreal Visual Logger, but was disappointed that there was only one 2D shape (a circle). So I added some new ones! There's shortcuts for squares & triangles but you can basically do any regular polygon shape, including stars, for fun. https://github.com/sinbad/StevesUEHelpers/blob/master/Source/StevesUEHelpers/Public/StevesVisualLogger.h

Unfortunately the visual logger doesn't support labels for custom paths so you can't add text like you can with circle, without a source engine change. 😥 #ue5 #gamedev

Visual Logger display of 2 rows of shapes in varying colours, triangle, square/diamond, hexagon, octagon, shallow 5-pointed star, spiky 10-pointed star. One of the rows uses thicker lines.
The code that produced this:

FVector Start(4000, 0, 0);
	int n = 0;
	UE_VLOG_TRIANGLE(this, LogMiner, Log, Start, FVector::UpVector, 10, FColor::Cyan);
	UE_VLOG_SQUARE(this, LogMiner, Log, Start + FVector(n += 25, 0, 0), FVector::UpVector, 10, FColor::Yellow);
	UE_VLOG_POLY(this, LogMiner, Log, Start + FVector(n += 25, 0, 0), FVector::UpVector, 10, 6, FColor::Orange);
	UE_VLOG_POLY(this, LogMiner, Log, Start + FVector(n += 25, 0, 0), FVector::UpVector, 10, 8, FColor::Emerald);

	UE_VLOG_STAR(this, LogMiner, Log, Start + FVector(n += 25, 0, 0), FVector::UpVector, 10, 2, 10, FColor::Turquoise);
	n = 0;
	Start = FVector(4000, 25, 0);
	UE_VLOG_TRIANGLE_THICK(this, LogMiner, Log, Start, FVector::UpVector, 10, FColor::Cyan, 3);
	UE_VLOG_SQUARE_THICK(this, LogMiner, Log, Start + FVector(n += 25, 0, 0), FVector::UpVector, 10, FColor::Yellow, 3);

How to get pixel-perfect text in #Unreal, a brief guide (2/2):
4. In your HUD blueprint, spawn that Actor at game launch, and get a copy of its widget.
5. Also make a dynamic material instance of a custom point-upscaling material you made.
6. When the HUD gets the "Draw HUD" event, grab the render target from the widget, set it as the texture for the dynamic material instance, and draw that material on the screen.

How to get pixel-perfect text in #Unreal, a brief guide (1/2):
1. Make a UI widget with a size box declaring itself to be 420x270 units (i.e. your target resolution)

3. Make an Actor blueprint that contains a Widget component that uses your UI widget. Tell the widget to render at desired size.

I finally found the time to write a tutorial on how to implement this hexagonal tiling material:
https://www.artstation.com/blogs/haukethiessen/BPb7/cheap-hex-tiling-for-every-occasion

- use of dithered UVs instead of sampling textures multiple times
- stepped offsets instead of rotation for grid-like surfaces like brick walls, etc.

If you're looking for an #unreal tutorial about using Custom Depth that actually takes into account modern UE behaviour, I recommend this one: https://superyateam.com/2019/06/17/custom-depth-and-custom-depth-stencil-in-ue4/

All the other videos and posts I found about this did not deal with the fact that for areas of the screen NOT covered by meshes rendering into custom depth, the value is a rather arbitrary 100000000 units, which will totally screw your attempts to render silhouettes behind geometry if you don't deal with it

Right-o, here's an open source light flicker component for #unreal using the good old flicker string that Quake used (and even HL:Alyx!).

https://github.com/sinbad/StevesUnrealUtils/blob/main/LightFlicker/docs/Readme.md

I've made a new utils repo for bitty things like this that you can just copy files out of it; may move some of my other utils to it later.

I couldn’t find an #unreal version of the classic Quake light flickering functions on a quick search so I’ve gone and created them, with a component that makes it easy to plug them into lights and material parameters (and provide your own custom flicker strings). Anyone interested in me publishing it? It’s not a huge deal, like a couple hundred lines of code, but someone might find it helpful

A quick lesson on the unintuitiveness of #unreal Blueprints sometimes.

Take a look at the attached C++ and Blueprint BeginPlay() functions. The Blueprint is a subclass of the C++ class. BP calls the parent BeginPlay at the start of its execution.

You'd expect the C++ BeginPlay() to be called first, right? So StepA would be executed before StepB? Seems obvious, right?

Wrong.

Simple C++ base class BeginPlay() function:

Super::BeginPlay();
StepA();
Blueprint subclass BeginPlay. It calls Parent: BeginPlay and then StepB.

Fellow #unreal engine enthusiasts (particularly those currently using #UE5), would love your input:

Even with my new desktop and RTX, I'm still unsure of UE5 being fast enough without taking up half of my SSD. I had a rough experience with UE4 on my laptop last year - everything took forever to load, even "simple" demo levels.

Has this been an issue for you with UE5? #Godot is so tempting for being light and fast. #UnrealEngine5 #unrealengine

Switching to another #GameEngine can be like learning another language. Apart from things like "material" and "camera", most of the terminology doesn't transfer. Someone compiled a phrasebook mapping #Unity3D terms to those of #Godot, #Unreal, #CryEngine, #Open3D, #GameMakerStudio, and #BabylonJS.

Welp the #Unity pricing change has fully fucked me over with a client, any #gamedev here endorse #godot or #unreal

Related to the recent #Unity mess I'm now looking into #Godot (feature lacking?) and #Unreal (too cumbersone?).

Are there out there experienced #godot mobile developers? for hire?

What would be good technical reasons to avoid using #unreal in a mobile platform?

To all the #Unreal users who feel validated in their engine choice: The decline of #Unity means that Unreal is losing its primary competitor. Simultaneously, the use of in-house engines is becoming less viable for many companies, as CD Project Red's switch to Unreal shows.
Just give Epic 1-2 years, and you'll see adjustments to their licensing options to adapt to this altered market situation.📈

I’ve always felt strongly that #GodotEngine has a lot going for it. Honestly, if I weren’t so invested in #webdev I would probably be a 100% Godot engine developer. It has a lot of rough edges and quirks, but it’s #free, #Opensource , and just works in an intuitive way. So, if you are thinking about switching from #unity #UnityEngine , please give Godot engine a look. Godot is still waiting for it’s #blender moment - the turning point in the industry where the open source upstart ( Blender ) overtook the entrenched industry tools like Maya etc. Don’t think for a moment that #unreal engine will be your salvation. They probably are just waiting for the dust to settle before they hatch a similar plan. Sad to see that #enshittification is starting to take hold in the game engine space.

This post goes hard hahahah https://cohost.org/adorablesergal/post/2825194-gamedev-circles-are

(if you're someone fleeing #Unity, I'm a fan of #Unreal, #Godot is clearly a standout, but really there's tons of options, including Doom, as this points out!)

Thing is, it’s fair for an engine to want to share in some of the success from the people who use it. AFAIK most people don’t have a problem with Epic’s #Unreal royalty system, which seems quite fair.

#Unity just had to go and do it in the most stupid, unfair and convoluted method possible

Unity>Unreal devs: How did you find learning Unreal after a very long time using Unity (version 2!)
How did you find it?

I keep _almost_ making the leap, but stop. Not quite sure why, I've been a dev since 1997 and have done all manner of things.. #Unity #Unreal #Gamedev

#UnrealEngine people, can someone please help me understand the difference between PushBased replication model and NetDormancy?

For me it seems like both of them provide a way to specify WHEN I want replication to happen. PushBased also allows you to specify what exact properties you want to replicate, but that's not that big of a deal.
Soooo why do we have both of them? Which one of them and when should I use?

What am I missing?

Shader experiment of the day:
When hex tiling is used to hide texture repetition, the coordinates are usually rotated per tile. That works great for chaotic surfaces without a noticeable directionality, but doesn't work for textures where the orientation matters. So I added a switch to just offset the coordinates randomly instead of rotating them. And for brick walls, tiles, etc, there is the option to use stepped offsets, so that the tiles are still aligned to the same grid:

Consider supporting TileMesh, a terrain generation tool. It's free if you volunteer to help test, and you can make 3d maps super fast!

Supporting it helps myself and my very small team afford development.

You can also now download a free demo that's limited to 100x100 tiles! :)

still working myself through an #Unreal tutorial and I enjoy it. Blueprints are great and it's basically what I wrote my Bachelor's thesis about … 15 years ago xD

I have a game idea, but I have yet to see if it's within reach or beyond.

#python #unreal #UE5 tip: if you want to install a Python library within an Unreal plugin you made:

1. Locate your engine's python.exe, usually `\Engine\Binaries\ThirdParty\Python3\Win64\python.exe`
2. Create a folder under your plugin: `\Content\Python\Lib\Win64\site-packages`
3. From the OS command line run:
` <UE_pythonexe> -m pip install --target="<Plugin>\Content\Python\Lib\Win64\site-packages" library_name`

Currently refining my 3D 9-splicing shader (should probably be called 27-slicing).
It enables level designers to scale objects freely without noticeable stretching, as long as there is an area at the center of the object without too many details. Combined with a relatively cheap triplanar mapping implementation, it's quite robust.
Still, there a few issues I have to figure out for this to be production-ready.

If you do #game #development and use #JetBrainsRider, #Unity, or #Unreal then you might be interested in attending the #JetBrains free virtual conference.

Last year we had a pair of folks do their whole presentation as a video game. It was bonkers!
